When Will My Childhood Sweetheart Marry Me?-Chapter 240: Yaoyao Disappeared
Pei Yan slouched lazily in his chair, glanced casually to the side, and uttered indifferently, "When I was a child, a fortune teller told me that I would rise to success because of a woman in my life."
That was a novel idea.
Jiang Xubai and Zhang Xinxin immediately perked up.
The night breeze mingled with the scent of alcohol; Jiang Shuyao looked embarrassed but remained silent, quietly waiting for him to continue.
Everyone held their breath in anticipation; no matter what the future held, witnessing the birth of a company name on such a night was filled with a strong sense of ceremony.
Pei Yan slowly raised his hand and finally gently rested it on the back of Jiang Shuyao’s chair, his tone flat, as if stating a fact.
"In this life, besides her, there’s no one else. You tell me, what should the name be?"
Jiang Shuyao choked.
What did he mean by that?
Zhang Xinxin quickly caught on and blurted out, "Shuyao Technology, what a beautiful name."
Jiang Xubai repeated it and nodded, "It’s quite smooth, also unique, not like the cookie-cutter styles on the market, it’s easy to remember."
"No way." Jiang Shuyao immediately dismissed it, turning to someone on the side who was watching the excitement and said fiercely, "If you dare use the name Shuyao, I’ll never let it go."
Oh wow.
What’s never letting it go mean?
Pei Yan raised an eyebrow, assuming a posture of eager anticipation.
Seeing his mischievous look, Jiang Shuyao was seething with anger.
Zhang Xinxin took in their interaction and laughed so hard she was bending forwards and backwards, enviously saying, "If I ever have the means to start my own company, I will definitely name it Xinxin Media."
Xinxin flourishing, what a lovely sentiment.
As the person involved, Jiang Shuyao couldn’t accept it; going to work every day and seeing her own name like a talisman hanging in the company lobby.
Even if she didn’t find it awkward, the employees would definitely scoff behind her back.
Throughout the evening, Jiang Xubai and Zhang Xinxin discussed fervently, with Boss Pei watching from the side, chiming in from time to time. The atmosphere was incredibly harmonious.
Jiang Shuyao, not pleased with the name earlier, found her mood lightened somewhat by their lively debate.
As the late-night snack was coming to an end, the final decision on the company’s name had to be made by the key person involved.
Three pairs of eyes looked towards Pei Yan, hoping this time there would be a conclusion.
Jiang Shuyao silently warned him to think carefully before speaking, to avoid upsetting her late at night.
However, the silence was unexpectedly broken by the jarring ring of a phone call.
Pei Yan’s phone was on the table, right next to Jiang Shuyao’s right hand.
Jiang Xubai urged him to ignore it, as they had important matters to deal with, but with that inadvertent glance, her eyes suddenly locked on to something.
It was a Capital area code.
No name noted down, but from Pei Yan’s expression, it seemed like it was the same person she was thinking of.
"Take it," Jiang Shuyao said softly.
In her memory, godmother wouldn’t call Pei Yan without a good reason.
The dinner before leaving the Capital still left her with doubts, many feelings obscure and undefined, everything seeming unusual and hard to probe.
Under everyone’s gaze, Pei Yan still picked up the phone and headed towards the roadside.
Jiang Shuyao followed his disappearing figure with her eyes; the distant streetlights dim and solitary, on this noisy night, resembled a silent elder, coldly observing the varied scene around.
What kind of person, what happened—perhaps at that time, only that streetlight knew.
When Pei Yan returned, his aura had become incredibly subdued.
Jiang Shuyao tightened her brows, "What’s wrong, was it godmother—"
"Help me safely send her back to school," Pei Yan spoke succinctly and forcefully, after instructing Jiang Xubai, he turned around, supported her shoulder, and tried to keep his voice steady, "Go back, get some sleep early. I’ll deal with something and come back soon."
She looked into his dark, gloomy eyes, where a flash of panic crossed, giving her a sudden bad feeling.
She had never seen Pei Yan like this before.
No matter the situation, when had he ever been afraid?
Jiang Shuyao’s body involuntarily tensed, and before she could ask again, the cold silhouette was already quickly swallowed by the night.
What happened?
It must have something to do with her godmother.
In that instant, she even dared not think about what kind of severe storm awaited them.
The night breeze was gentle, and the neon lights flashed painfully in people’s eyes. Jiang Xubai called a car on his phone, and just ten seconds after placing the order, he heard Zhang Xinxin’s panic-stricken voice from behind.
"Did you see Yaoyao come out? She seems to have disappeared."
"What do you mean disappeared?" Jiang Xubai frowned. "Slow down, make yourself clear."
Zhang Xinxin was almost crying, "The bathroom door was broken, I asked Yaoyao to help me watch outside, suddenly a man wearing a mask appeared, and then..."
"And then what!"
Then...
She didn’t see clearly, only catching a glimpse of a figure through the door crack. By the time she pulled up her pants and opened the door, Yaoyao was gone.
Zhang Xinxin grabbed Jiang Xubai’s arm, trembling, "Could she have been kidnapped? The news recently mentioned a psychopathic killer—"
"Don’t speculate wildly!"
Jiang Xubai canceled the car-hailing app and hurried into the skewer restaurant.
"Boss, is there any surveillance at the bathroom’s back door?"
These common late-night snack shops would hardly spend money on surveillance; asking was merely for some mental comfort.
"Still can’t get through on the phone?"
"Yes, it’s been a whole half hour. Xiao Bai, should we tell Pei Yan?"
The two searched around the vicinity over and over, with Zhang Xinxin on the verge of collapse. The person disappeared right under her watch. With Boss Pei’s level of care for Yaoyao, if something happened to her tonight, she wouldn’t have the face to go back to the base.
Jiang Xubai was equally frantic, his mind a tangled mess, but his reason told him he must stay calm and not panic.
Just as he managed to calm down, his phone rang again. Looking at the caller ID, his fingers couldn’t help but tremble.
It was Pei Yan calling.
...
Before her consciousness submerged, Jiang Shuyao only felt her nasal cavity completely filled with a stinging medicinal odor. The person’s strength was immense, suffocating her almost entirely, leaving no chance for even a slight struggle or cry for help.
In a groggy state, the person carried her out the back door, shoved her into a car, and drove for so long. She succumbed to the drugs’ control, losing consciousness before even reaching the final destination.
Jiang Shuyao had a very long dream.
In the dream, Pei Yan’s eyes were bloodshot, his hands covered in blood, as he stumbled and called out her name.
She floated in midair, desperately reaching out to grasp him, but no matter how hard she tried, she and Pei Yan seemed to be isolated in two parallel spaces. Though their fingertips intersected, she could never feel his warmth.
Why would she have such a strange dream?
Where was she now?
It was so quiet around.
Jiang Shuyao frowned tightly, sweat densely beading on her forehead and quickly dampening her hair.
Deep in her consciousness, as if a familiar voice came through from the darkness, filled with tension and urgency.
Yaoyao...
Pei Yan was calling her.
Was it him?
