Chapter 134: suck out their life force

Ethan wiped the blood from his body and changed into new clothes.

He checked his power level by viewing the crystal near his heart, where his power core is located, with his mind’s eye, channeling all his power inward, and saw nine thick stripes that briefly shone around it.

"Hmm. Level 9 of late-stage dungeon explorer, just one more level to enter a new rank," Ethan murmured to himself as he assessed his powers, a small smile curling on his lips—glad his monster killing was helpful to him.

A bright light shone around him, and the wolf’s corpse turned into white, spotless fur. Ethan picked it up, running his hands over it to feel the softness, imagining Eva using it as a coat or a rug—his speed in putting it into his ring quickened.

He couldn’t wait to find Eva. Bringing out the shell, he still felt its coldness and frowned, wondering where the hell Eva was in the dungeon.

Meanwhile, Eva, whom he was thinking about, appeared in the blinding darkness, exactly at the same height she was falling from.

She left Foxy in her space to keep it safe and to avoid it becoming a burden if she landed somewhere dangerous.

Eva shivered and wrapped her arms around herself, pulling the bundle closer to her chest for a fragile sense of security in the overwhelming darkness.

’Maybe I should use the glowing stones now... But I don’t want to see something I shouldn’t, aha! Maybe those flying monsters are around me right now, staring at me and waiting for me to turn on the light...(; ŏ﹏ ŏ) mummy.’

Her thoughts spiraled out of control, and her heart raced at the possibility of them coming true. But she knew she had to use the glowing stones to see where she was landing and what surrounded her.

She swallowed hard and dug her trembling fingers into the bundle. Taking a deep breath, she wrapped herself in an energy dome before pulling out a stone. Light flared, revealing her surroundings.

Well, not entirely; it was like a torchlight, only illuminating the area around its owner or where it was pointed—making the darkness seem more oppressive around her.

’Ehh, what’s this? I can’t even see what’s in front of me with the glow coming from this stone, or do I need to use two at once?’ she wondered as she removed the other glowing stone from the bundle.

The light just seemed a little brighter, but it still couldn’t pierce the darkness, and Eva gave up, feeling she shouldn’t have bothered. Still, she was grateful to see a few steps ahead, and no monsters were staring at her... she hoped.

Time went on, and Eva kept falling. Her arm was numb from holding the glowing stones, and she was about to give up when a sudden gust of wind rushed up from below.

Her expression grew serious as she lowered the stone, trying to see her surroundings and understand what was happening. Then she hit the ground hard — the dome around her absorbed the impact before shattering into fragments.

A groan escaped Eva’s lips as she drew in a sharp, pained breath—her shoulder had dislocated, and one leg bent awkwardly from the force of her fall.

"Mmm." Her eyes watered as she tried to set her bones back in place. She gritted her teeth and forced them into position—a sharp pop echoed through the room, followed by her muffled scream.

Sweat coated her pale face as she prepared herself for the next pain from resetting her leg.

But before she could touch her leg, she sensed several pairs of eyes watching her from above. The faint glow of scattered green crystals helped her see clearly. When she looked up, goosebumps covered her skin, and her hair stood on end—the ceiling was filled with the glowing eyes of flying monsters.

"I’m finished," Eva muttered in a daze and instantly brought Foxy out of her space to buy herself some time to reset her bones.

Foxy appeared and immediately stood guard in front of its master as it transformed into its large form.

"Suck out all their energy, don’t stop, even if you suck out their life force," Eva commanded. Life force also represents a type of energy.

Still, she tried not to let Foxy absorb that energy when she was with the others, as it triggers an uncontrollable surge of greed, causing Foxy to try to absorb the life force of both friends and foes once it gets a taste of it.

But now, she’s the only one here, and the monsters were too overwhelming to face alone without using Foxy’s trump card.

Foxy roared in response, and its tail flicked in the air as the energy around it began to build. Then, a visible green hue left the monster and floated into Foxy’s open mouth.

Eva clenched her teeth and realigned her bone. A brief scream escaped her lips as tears rolled down her chin from the pain.

She absorbed the small amount of energy around Foxy and felt completely refreshed. She got to her feet and glanced at Foxy’s tail, where a seventh tail was slowly emerging.

Eva couldn’t help but remember the time in the dungeon with Julian. While they were training, Foxy nearly drained his life force completely—if she hadn’t reacted quickly and knocked Foxy unconscious, he might not have survived. Around them lay the corpses of monsters, dried up like ancient mummies in a museum—lifeless, as if dead for centuries.

Like the corpse of those flying monsters at that moment, the other monsters shrieked in fury and surged toward Foxy in great waves.

Their shadows plunged the room into darkness, except for faint glimmers of light from the green crystal, the energy hue, and the glowing stones, which provided Eva with enough light to see the horde of monsters flying toward them in fury.

Eva didn’t care if the entire place caved in under the blast of her energy bomb; she had no choice—without it, she and Foxy would be reduced to nothing but bones.

Ignoring the loud shriek that numbed her eardrums, she joined Foxy in draining their energy. Hers wasn’t absorbed but instead formed a huge beam of light above the monsters.

Once the energy was full, it exploded.

"Boom!!!"

The ground beneath them trembled, and a web of cracks spread across the ceiling. Then, the ceiling collapsed, crashing down onto some of the monsters’ corpses. The ground was soaked in black blood as the golden glow left the monster’s body and seeped into Eva.

She was too busy dodging the falling ceiling chunks that threatened to crush her and Foxy—who had reverted to its small form—to notice the golden glow seeping into her body.

Eva grabbed it by the scruff and dodged the monsters and falling chunks of rock from the ceiling.

A dash toward the end of the room where a rocky door with unknown symbols stood. Monsters chased her from all sides, unconcerned about being crushed by the rocks—one monster managed to land a hit on her, its sharp wings slashing her back.

"Mm—" A sharp groan escaped Eva as searing pain ripped through her. She couldn’t stop; she forced herself forward even as another attack tore through her shoulder, blood bursting out and dyeing her clothes crimson.

Eva bit her lip to keep from crying out as she spun on her heels and drove her dagger into the monster’s neck. She yanked it free, and black blood gushed out.

She absorbed the energy of the monsters around to heal herself, but before she could recover fully, a massive rock crashed down, pinning her legs beneath it.

"Haa!" Eva cried out as the sickening crack of bones echoed around her.

She didn’t have time to get used to the pain; other monsters were catching up to her, and another stone was heading toward her head.

Foxy shifted into its other form, wrapping a tail around her waist to pull her out of danger. It then darted toward the door, which unfortunately wouldn’t open.
