Chapter 152: estimated to be half a day’s journey

The man looked at her in shock for a moment before his face contorted with anger and blame.

"You’re so powerful, why can’t you save my wife? Aren’t you here to protect us while we build the stronghold?! Why are you being so selfish? Help save my wife!" the man yelled, trying to pull her hand—but Ethan’s kick threw him back before he could touch her.

"As my wife said, we won’t be saving anyone, but we can open a crack in the dome for you to save her yourself. Should I?" Ethan asked calmly, a flicker of disgust crossing his gaze as the man hesitated to answer.

"Your love for your wife is so strong, your concern moved us, so we won’t stop you from going. Isn’t this a good chance to save her before the storm hits?" Julian chimed in from the side, his tone sincere, but his eyes cold as he glanced at the man.

"I-I-I... you’re strong enough to save her. What if I lose my way and we both get caught in the storm? You’re supposed to protect us anyway." The man avoided their gazes as he spoke, his voice full of righteous indignation.

The crowd was divided between two groups: those who thought the man was shameless and those who believed he was right. It was Ethan and the others’ responsibility to protect them.

"He could have saved his wife since he hadn’t kept stalling and acted fast before the storm hit." Someone commented in the crowd, which led to other discussions.

"He’s a coward and selfish... he didn’t love his wife enough to put himself in harm’s way."

"Who could blame him? As for me, I won’t dare move an inch closer to the dome, let alone go outside."

"But aren’t they being ruthless to leave the man’s wife out there? Why can’t one of them save her? They have enough strength to do that."

"Right. It’s just saving the man’s wife. The storm hasn’t hit here yet. There’s still time."

"Tsk, self-righteous fools, if you’re so concerned, why don’t you help the man find his wife instead of standing here and running your mouth thoughtlessly?"

"Does being strong mean they have to constantly put themselves at risk?"

Some argued with those whose opinions they disagreed with, considering them offensive and entitled.

The man heard the people agreeing with him, and he straightened up, feeling more confident and morally justified to face Ethan and the rest.

"I’m a builder with earth powers. You need me to build the stronghold... why don’t you help my wife, and I’ll work sincerely, or I wouldn’t work at all." The man threatened, stiffening under their cold gazes.

"Julian, toss him out. Since he isn’t going to work, there’s no point in carrying extra baggage," Eva responded in an indifferent tone, furious at the man’s audacity and glad she didn’t bother to save anyone.

Aaron, who had been listening with half an ear, noticed the roar of the wind grow louder and felt the wind’s weight pressing down on his shadow dome.

"Eva! Make another dome, storm’s here!" he yelled, snapping everyone’s attention back to the storm, and the room plunged into silence before fearful whispers echoed through the crowd.

The man’s wife was pushed out of their minds; their scared gazes fixed on the ice dome as if they could see the storm outside.

Eva took deep breaths and calmed her mind before forming a dome that covered her body. She then expanded it slowly until she mastered it, enveloping Aaron’s dome as well, which was showing signs of cracks.

The ground beneath them trembled, with trails of loose sand sliding from the sides and above the dome, which shuddered heavily as if it might be uprooted.

Some covered their ears and hid their faces between their legs as the world shook around them, the smell of dust and sand slipping from the dome shield.

Hearts raced with fear, their bodies trembling at the thought of the dome caving in and burying them alive.

Ethan, Eva, and Aaron paled with exhaustion from making countless domes at the first sign of cracks.

The man whose wife was outside grieved, knowing she wouldn’t survive this, but was secretly glad he didn’t go out to save her.

He would keep her memories alive in his heart. A tear rolled down his face as he buried his head between his knees.

They endured a long, agonizing wait until the wind’s roar subsided and the storm ended.

Eva wobbled on her feet, and Julian caught her before she hit the ground face down.

"Rest." He carefully helped her onto her beast, making her comfortable on Foxy’s back.

The green dome covering the black dome shattered the moment she released her control, followed by the black, and finally the ice wall shattered.

Sand poured down like rain on top of them, but not enough to bury them, reaching their waists.

The desert returned to normal, with the wind blowing dust and some sand particles into the air.

"We’re alive!" someone cried out with joy and hugged the person next to him, tears of relief streaming down his face.

"It was so scary, I thought the dome was going to break at any second.... Luckily, it didn’t." Another man patted his chest with a relieved smile, his pale face regaining its healthy flush.

Smiles and happy laughter filled the room, everyone feeling relieved and grateful to Ethan and the rest, while selectively ignoring their earlier remarks.

Ethan ignored their gazes and leaned against his beast to rest. They have to continue their journey before something worse hits here again.

Eva absorbed the energy in the air and recovered half of her strength.

She took out a bottle of water, handed it to Ethan, and threw it toward Aaron, who was far from her.

Eva drank the water in large gulps, exhaling contentedly. She washed her hands, then took out some fruits and handed them to the others to help fill their stomachs.

"Um?" Eva asked through muffled lips, wondering if Julian was interested.

He washed his hands with water from the bottle and quickly grabbed a handful of grapes before she could change her mind, popping them into his mouth and humming at the sweet taste on his tongue.

Eva leaned into Foxy’s back, feeding her grapes while she chewed.

"We’ll rest for thirty minutes before we continue," Ethan muttered as he peeled the banana.

"Hah..." Eva knocked her head against Foxy’s back in frustration, wishing the journey would end.

"We should be closer to the desert boundary. Let me check again," Aaron chimed in, ruffling Eva’s hair to comfort her.

"Hope so," Eva grumbled with a hopeful tone as she glanced over at Aaron, who mounted his crow, then soared into the skies.

Aaron was gone for a moment, Eva had finished the grapes in her bowl and was about to take out some donuts from yesterday when the crow flew back.

"We’re close, estimated to be half a day’s journey," Aaron informed them as soon as the crow landed.

"Finally! Did you see what the other side looks like? Is it a forest or a mountain area?" Eva asked curiously.

"Forest. Trees were scattered everywhere." Aaron replied as he remembered the sight he had glimpsed from afar.

"Okay, let’s go. We won’t stop until we reach the other side," Eva urged, feeling pumped and ready to get this journey over with.

"If we drag them all the way, it would be a day’s journey instead. Wait until midnight, then you can put them in your space, and we can journey fast." Julian suggested, motioning to the people who had bruised, tired faces from the earlier fight.

Eva’s excitement faded as she looked at the crowd.

She leaned back on Foxy’s back and grabbed a bowl of donuts topped with powdered sugar.

Taking a bite, she held the bowl closer to herself, indicating she wasn’t willing to share with anyone.

Julian edged closer and tried to steal a bite, but it was as if Eva had eyes on her back. She quickly dodged and grabbed a large bowl of mixed fruits for them.

"Eat this. The donuts are mine." Eva’s tone carried a dangerous edge as she took a bite, her face squinting from the sweetness and softness.

Ethan shook his head with a helpless smile and picked up the bowl in front of them.

"Stingy~" Julian muttered before picking an apple from the bunch and taking a crisp bite.
