70s Delicate Girl: A Guide to Being a Rich Woman-Chapter 39: Enthusiasm
"What do I have to be afraid of, Third Aunt? You all better behave yourselves," Xu Minghui smiled calmly.
"The shoe factory isn’t a place outsiders can just walk into. Why were you allowed in?" Xu He looked at the two nephews and niece. It was unusual for them to get in without the guard stopping them.
"Mumu, over here, I knew you’d be arriving around this time," Du Yu ran over from the other side, "Hey, Minghui." Du Yu didn’t forget to greet Xu Minghui.
"Why did you come out especially?" Xu Mumu asked with a smile, seeing the look on Du Yu’s face, her expression softened. This little kid was currently her little lucky charm.
"My mom sent me out to buy soy sauce, happened to come to pick you up," Du Yu grinned broadly.
"Alright then, brother, I’ll head over first. You can go back." Xu Mumu glanced at the soy sauce bottle in Du Yu’s hand and quickly looked away. At home, there were only oil and salt as condiments, and even those were used sparingly. Her current goal was to ensure everyone got enough to eat, and that the food tasted good enough.
But this goal was a bit challenging. Her mother, Li Caixia, married into the Old Xu Family, and cooking was only expected of her for the first two years. Over the years, there were several sisters-in-law, and Li Caixia was sweet-tongued, keeping Madam Chen happy, so most of the chores fell on the second and fourth wives.
To know how Li Caixia’s cooking tasted, we’ll find out in the evening.
"Got it," Xu Minghui nodded with a cheerful smile.
Du Yu took Xu Mumu back home, leaving Xu He and Lin Juan looking at each other. They obviously recognized Du Yu.
Du Yu grew up in the shoe factory, and almost everyone there knew him.
"Minghui, how do you know the son of the Director of the shoe factory?" Xu He looked at Xu Minghui eagerly after Xu Mumu left.
Du Yu’s dad was indeed the Director of the shoe factory. Xu He had been working in the factory for many years without a chance of a permanent position. He hadn’t realized Xu Mumu was so close to Du Yu; if he’d known earlier, asking Xu Mumu to say a few kind words to Du Yu might make it incredibly easy for him to get a permanent position.
"We know each other pretty well, but what’s it to you, Third Uncle." Xu Minghui sneered and then turned to leave, not caring about the angry faces of the third household.
"Xu He, what do we do now?" Lin Juan suddenly felt a bit at a loss, regretting their decision to split the family.
Initially, she was the one most in favor of splitting, but now she was regretting it.
"How should I know, let’s go back first," Xu He pressed his lips together and carried his son back to the Old Lin Family. When the holidays come, he would go back and speak nicely to his older brother. When he builds a good relationship with him, the job here would be secured.
"Were those two people from our factory? Your family?" Du Yu asked while walking.
"Yeah, my Third Uncle and Aunt. They’ve just split from the family. Seeing that I’m close to you, they’ll probably want to use that to their advantage. Don’t listen to whatever they say later." Xu Mumu preemptively warned Du Yu.
"Huh? What do you mean?" Du Yu didn’t quite understand Xu Mumu’s point. He was going to suggest that if they were Xu Mumu’s relatives, he could ask his dad to look after them.
"We’re not on good terms with my Third Uncle. They might want to use my connection with you to climb up, so tell Mr. Du to prevent them from succeeding," Xu Mumu said with a smile. She didn’t like her Third Uncle or Aunt, nor their son, Dongbao, so she naturally didn’t want to give them any chance to climb up.
"Got it," Du Yu nodded, wondering if maybe her Third Uncle’s family had bullied the Xu family too much.
When they arrived at Du Yu’s house, both his parents were home.
"Hello, Mr. Du, Mrs. Qin," Xu Mumu greeted sweetly.
"Mumu, you’re here, come sit down. I’ll go get you some egg cake," Qin Jie, delighted to see Xu Mumu, quickly went to get some snacks for her.
"Thank you, Mrs. Qin, you don’t have to be so formal," Xu Mumu said helplessly. Honestly, this was her second visit to Du Yu’s house, and each time she felt a bit guilty accepting food and gifts.
Du Zhen couldn’t help but take a few more looks at Xu Mumu. Over the past week, Du Yu had been diligently doing his homework after school, a significant change that started when this young girl began tutoring him.
Seeing such a fragile-looking young girl effectively handle his son was quite a surprise for Du Zhen.
"Dad, we’re going to have our lesson here. Can you move to the other side?" Du Yu pulled out his textbooks and placed them on the living room table, where Du Zhen had been reading the newspaper. Du Yu promptly shooed his dad away.
Du Zhen nodded and took his newspaper to another area, as his son’s education was more important.
"Mumu, have some egg cake. I made it this morning, give it a try," Qin Jie said with a smile, regarding Xu Mumu fondly. Xu Mumu, who looked so sweet and tender, was her ideal vision of a daughter.
After glancing critically at her rough-around-the-edges son, Qin Jie shifted her gaze away with some disdain.
Her health hadn’t been great all these years, so she only had Du Yu, but she’d always wanted a daughter, though the opportunity never came.
"Thank you, Mrs. Qin," Xu Mumu accepted the egg cake from Qin Jie. The cake was fluffy and fragrant, tasting really nice.
"Mom, you didn’t get me any," Du Yu complained, feeling a bit jealous of how enthusiastically his mom treated Xu Mumu. He was the real son here!!
"Don’t you have hands of your own?" Qin Jie rolled her eyes at her son.
Du Yu shrugged and took a piece for himself.
Du Yu bit into it hard, expressing his discontent.
"Such drama, hurry up and study," Qin Jie playfully swatted her son on the back.
Xu Mumu chuckled softly, then took out her prepared textbooks. Du Yu had a decent foundation, so teaching him was relatively easy for her.
As Xu Mumu earnestly taught, Du Zhen, though appearing to be engrossed in his newspaper, kept an ear on how the lesson was going.
Honestly, he was quite surprised that his son could be so attentive during the lessons. The young girl seemed to have quite a knack for teaching.
The entire afternoon was spent with Xu Mumu tutoring Du Yu, during which Qin Jie brought over plenty of snacks.
When leaving, this time, Xu Mumu only accepted the one dollar Qin Jie gave her, even though they wanted to give her two dollars, which she refused. Seeing her reluctance to accept money, Qin Jie wrapped up some egg cakes for her.
Qin Jie was so hospitable that Xu Mumu eventually had no choice but to accept.
