Chapter 208: The Last Night

Visha had helped Nyx and herself. Her imagination was no longer running wild, and she was finally able to relax. So for the next few days, she allowed herself to laugh and have fun.

But fun days can never last long. There will be days when you want to stop something from happening, but nothing you do can change it.

The night before their convoy arrived at the valley, seven people stood apart from the crowd. No one spoke, but the silence was deafening. This would be their last night together.

According to Chi, they would see each other again. But she also said they would find her. How was she so sure they would be travelling in the future?

Still, the thought of seeing them again lessened the heartache she was feeling.

"This had to happen sooner or later." Chi let out a breath. Her eyes were red as they drifted towards Visha.

"I would prefer later," Visha replied.

"So would I. But we can’t go to the festival with you. This is as far as we can go."

Chi looked in the direction of the valley.

The words hit like a physical blow. She hadn’t expected herself to feel it this much. She rubbed her chest, right where her heart was.

Pouting slightly, she tried to make light of it. "You don’t need to make it sound like that. Didn’t you say we would see each other again?"

Chi smiled and didn’t answer.

Krag patted Uri on the shoulder. Pulling him in for a hug, he whispered, "Next time we see each other, you should remember the fight you owe me."

Uri was confused. He didn’t remember Krag and him having any conversation about a fight. But from his statement, there was apparently something he was missing.

Cato and Lyra were standing not far away while they said their goodbyes. Visha’s eyes met Lyra. The sister she knew nothing about.

She still had no clue about their origins. She didn’t ask the mysterious two about it. There would never be an answer that satisfied her. And now, they were planning to take Lyra with them.

She knew it was for her own safety, but what was the danger? What danger will she be in if she stays?

Visha hugged Lyra. "I’ll see you again, sis."

She stepped away, unable to understand why she felt her throat had closed. Her eyes felt wet.

She wasn’t close enough to Lyra to cry the way she wanted to now. It was an unknown emotion to her, and she wanted to stifle it.

She turned to Uri, Xeno, and Cato, standing together. They were whispering among themselves as Krag and Chi watched.

After Cato and Lyra had said their goodbyes, Krag and Chi stepped forward once more. This time, they walked a distance away from Cato and Lyra, leaving them watching on the sidelines.

"She can’t stay with you. Danger is approaching, and she isn’t strong enough to survive it."

Chi and Krag observed the trio.

"We know you have questions, but there are many answers we cannot give."

"Then give us something," Visha reasoned. "A reason, a clue...something."

"There are people looking for you. You have something they want. They will harm the people you love."

"The saying, ’blessed by the land,’ is just as much a blessing as it is a curse."

When Visha heard what Krag said, her body stiffened. Her eyes went wide, and she stared at him. Her eyes trembled.

"You know ’blessed by the land’?"

"We know a lot of things. Just make sure you become strong enough to keep yourself safe."

Chi chimed in before Krag could say anything else. "If someone asks for your story, don’t give it."

Those words made Visha, who had started to relax, stiffen again. Her mouth opened and closed.

"Don’t worry so much. With these two, you’ll be fine. But when you get to the valley, if you kill anyone makes sure to clean up the mess."

The words were targeted at the three of them. And she sounded certain they would kill someone.

Chi laughed. "I don’t know whether you’ll kill someone or not. It’s just...from past experiences."

"Anyway, remember what we said. And don’t trust people too easily. Some of the kindest are often the most ruthless."

"When are you leaving?" Uri asked. "You decided to tell us this tonight. Does that mean you leave early tomorrow, or are you planning to leave tonight?"

"Tonight. When everyone is asleep."

"And you will not tell us where you plan to go?"

Chi leaned forward, catching Uri’s eye. "Heading to another story. We hope to see you there soon." She straightened and laughed softly. "We can’t tell you. But, I promise, we will definitely see each other again."

Her words were a small distraction, but a distraction nonetheless. It made the atmosphere feel lighter. They moved on to talking about other things, hoping that talking about something else would take the real situation of their minds.

They walked over to where Cato and Lyra were standing. Visha reached out to squeeze her hand. She started talking about the tribe and what they would do when they went back.

At first, Lyra was a little confused. They knew she was leaving. Though she was reluctant to leave. But later she understood.

She too joined everyone in making plans for the future.

They had mapped out what they wanted to do when they arrived. They talked about what they might learn at the festival. They ignored everything around them and laughed as they stoked the embers of the fire.

That night, they stayed up, talking late into the night about everything. Things that were insignificant and unimportant suddenly became world-changing ideas.

When the embers died down, Krag, Chi, Lyra, and Cato stood.

They did not say their goodbyes. They only said there was something they needed to do and would be back later.

In this way, it was simply the pause of a conversation and not a complete goodbye.

A small whisper sounded in the wind. A sound they hadn’t heard for a while.

[See you soon]

Krag and Chi’s backs stiffened slightly before slumping. They continued to walk away.
