Chapter 156: Misery!
A look of worry crossed Sophie’s face as she asked, "Sawyer Jones?" She wanted to confirm she had heard it correctly.
"Yes, Grandma," Abigail answered with a smile, not noticing her grandmother’s nervous expression.
"Which Jones family?" Sophie’s voice had lost its previous cheerfulness and now sounded tense. She turned to Sawyer and continued, "Is your family the Jones family from the capital?"
Sawyer was taken aback by Sophie’s sharp gaze and could clearly see how nervous she was. He nodded.
"Yes, Grandma," Sawyer answered calmly, even though he felt a chill run through him as he guessed what was on her mind.
Sophie was at a loss for words. However, knowing this young man was related to the Jones family tightened her heart. She needed to clarify something with Sawyer before his relationship with her granddaughter turned sour.
However,
Before Sophie could speak, Abigail asked, "Grandma, do you know the Jones family from the capital?" She was excited to learn more about her grandmother’s background.
Abigail was waiting to hear about her Grandma’s history because she was utterly clueless about it. Until today, she had never even known who her grandfather was or which Lewis family her Grandma came from.
Sophie turned to see her granddaughter, her eyes radiant with worry, when she noticed how happy Abigail was now. It broke her heart as she could sense the troubled path that Abigail and Sawyer’s relationship was heading toward—misery.
Once again, Abigail somehow overlooked her grandmother’s concern and fear.
Instead of answering Abigail’s question, Sophie smiled at her and said, "Abby, my dear, can you wait outside for a moment? I need to speak with Sawyer alone."
Abigail was taken aback by her grandmother’s request. She only realized that her grandmother’s expression was no longer happy. There was a clear look of concern in her eyes.
Sitting up straighter, Abigail leaned in closer to her grandmother. "What’s wrong, Grandma? Is there any problem? Why do you want to talk to Sawyer alone?" she whispered so that only Sophie could hear her.
However, the small living room made it easy for Sawyer to hear Abigail’s words clearly. He felt just as confused and tense as she did.
Abigail began to feel anxious and realized something was off. When her grandmother heard Sawyer’s family name, she slowly noticed her grandmother’s sudden change in her expression. Her mind raced with the troubling question, ’Does Grandma know Sawyer’s family? Is she related to the Jones family?’
"Grandma? Please don’t scare me, okay?" Abigail expressed her worry again.
Sophie Lewis smiled at Abigail while gently patting her hand, trying to calm her down. However, the smile felt forced, which made Abigail even more anxious.
"Abby, Grandma just needs to talk to Sawyer. Please give us time to talk. No need to worry, alright... It’s nothing serious."
Abigail felt doubt creeping in. She sensed that her Grandma’s words didn’t come from the heart. Shaking her head, she refused to leave. She wouldn’t let Sawyer speak alone with Grandma!
"Please, my dear, Abby—" Sophie pleaded again. Her trembling hand wrapped around Abigail’s as if trying to convey that there was no choice but for her to leave the room.
Still, Abigail stood her ground. She knew something was troubling her Grandma, and she wanted to stay to hear what she was about to say to Sawyer.
"I won’t! I’m staying—"
"Abby..."
Sawyer’s voice interrupted her protest. Turning to him, she saw his calm, loving gaze, and her worry and fear slowly began to fade.
"Could you please wait for us outside?" he continued lovingly. "There’s no need to worry too much, Abby. Grandma just wants to share a secret with me. It’s nothing serious."
Abigail shook her head, refusing him.
Sawyer let out a silent sigh, noticing the worry in her gaze. "Abby, can you trust me?" he smiled, trying to reassure her as he locked eyes with her.
In the end, Abigail agreed to his request.
Turning her gaze back to her grandmother, Abigail said, "Please don’t be too hard on Sawyer, Grandma. He sincerely saved my life; moreover, he is my savior and the person I trust to make me happy... I like him!" Her voice trembled slightly.
Sophie was taken aback by her words.
Hearing this made Sawyer’s heart warm. It boosted his confidence as he realized Abigail was starting to love him.
"If it weren’t for Sawyer, I might never see you again like this, Grandma. So, please... I beg you, don’t make things difficult for him."
Abigail expressed her feelings before standing up. She rushed outside, worried that she might change her mind and go back to drag Sawyer out of the room.
...
Sophie Lewis was still in shock after hearing Abigail’s words, but she chose not to ask her anything further. Instead, she simply watched her granddaughter leave the room and close the door behind her.
Once she felt calm, Sophie turned to see Sawyer seated across from her. Noticing how composed he appeared, she clenched her hands tightly in her lap.
"Sawyer, I’m sorry for making you uncomfortable with this situation, but I need to talk to you alone without Abby," she said, her voice shaking as she tried to express her deep worry. The realization that this young man came from a family she once knew weighed heavily on her mind.
"It’s okay, Grandma. I understand," Sawyer replied with a smile, attempting to suppress his own anxiety. He knew Sophie might react differently now that she knew his last name. "You can ask me anything, Grandma. I promise to answer you honestly. Nothing to hide."
Sophie nodded slowly, her eyes still sharp as she stared back at Sawyer.
"Before I ask about your family, can you tell me what happened to Abigail? Why did she say that she might have died if you hadn’t helped her?" Sophie asked curiously.
Sophie could only think of one thing: her granddaughter suffered after Ryland’s betrayal, and Sawyer helped heal her broken heart. Perhaps that’s why Abigail said that.
Sawyer didn’t hesitate to share how he met Abigail on the rooftop. He recounted everything, explaining that Abigail had nearly fallen from the 15th-floor rooftop, and he just happened to be there to save her.
"Grandma, that was the first time I met Abigail. After hearing what happened to her, I became curious and eventually fell in love with her," Sawyer said, a smile spreading across his face as he recalled that day.
Sophie was utterly shocked. She never imagined her granddaughter had almost died after calling off her engagement with Ryland. Now, she could understand Abigail’s earlier words.
’Abby was right... Sawyer was her savior,’ Sophie realized. But she couldn’t shake the feeling of concern. ’Still, I can’t let Sawyer bring Abby into his family...’ Her heart ached as she imagined Abigail’s future if she insisted on joining the Jones family.
Clearing his throat silently, Sawyer hurriedly continued, "Grandma, I know our relationship is still new, but I promise I will never hurt your granddaughter. When I am certain about my feelings for her, I don’t plan to date her but to marry her."
Sophie was silent, not saying anything; she was still shocked to hear about Abigail, who almost lost her life.
’God, thank you for sending Sawyer to help Abby. But I hope my only granddaughter never experiences what I went through in the past...’
Sophie felt her hands shaking as she clenched them tightly. She continued to listen to Sawyer express his feelings for her granddaughter, and the more she heard, the more her heart ached.
"Grandma, that’s how I met your granddaughter, the woman I chose to be my wife," Sawyer said, finishing his story about how he met Abigail and began to fall for her and what he promised to make Abigail happy.
Sawyer smiled, noticing that Sophie appeared to be in a daze.
"You mentioned you wanted to ask me something?" Sawyer’s question snapped Sophie back to reality.
She looked at him and nodded quickly before asking, "Yes. You said you were part of the Jones family. What is your relation with Nathaniel Jones?"
Sawyer’s calm suddenly vanished when he heard Sophie mention her grandfather’s name. For some reason, fear crept in. His suspicion was confirmed: Sophie was related to his grandfather.
"Nathaniel Jones is my grandfather. Do you know him?" he asked, anxious about her response.
Sophie didn’t answer immediately, but her dark expression clearly showed her answer, adding to Sawyer’s tension.
After a prolonged silence in which they merely stared at each other, Sophie finally broke the silence.
"Sawyer, I know you love Abigail. My granddaughter also seems to have feelings for you, but I believe your relationship cannot continue."
Sophie’s voice trembled, and her heart ached as she uttered her own words. "I don’t want Abigail to lead a miserable life if she marries you—"
Sawyer felt his heart sink to hear Sophie’s rejection.
"Grandma, please tell me why you assume that Abigail will have a miserable life after marrying me?" Sawyer asked, confused by Sophie’s confidence.
