Chapter 157: Grandma Sophie’s Concerns

"Grandma, please tell me why you assume that Abigail will have a miserable life after marrying me?" Sawyer asked, confused.

Sophie seemed reluctant to answer. She only stared at Sawyer with mixed emotions, trying to string together the right words to explain why she disapproved of his relationship with her granddaughter—simply because she didn’t want her granddaughter to join a wealthy family like the Jones’.

Seeing Sophie avoid his gaze, which clearly showed her refusal to answer, Sawyer couldn’t help but ask again.

"Grandma, I’m sorry if my question sounds rude. Do you have a relationship with my Grandpa, Nathaniel Jones?" Hearing his own question made his stomach twist.

He worried that Sophie Lewis might have been his grandfather’s secret lover. If that were true, his relationship with Abigail would be over; he could not marry her if they shared the same blood. The mere thought of that possibility made his blood run cold. Still, he refused to believe it—he would never believe it!

Sawyer tried to appear calm, even though he felt like Hurricane Patricia was raging inside him. His heart raced with anxiety as he waited for Sophie to answer. But when he saw her laugh, confusion formed a frown on his forehead.

Sophie was taken aback by Sawyer’s words. With a small laugh, she quickly shook her head in response to his question.

"Oh, dear Sawyer, of course, I don’t have a relationship with your Grandpa, Nathaniel Jones. I’m not close to him, but I know of him through someone from my past." Sophie’s expression slowly turned dark, and her heart ached at the memory.

In contrast to Sophie, Sawyer felt very relieved. He was no longer worried about whether he and Abigail shared the same blood.

However, something still bothered him.

"Grandma, if you don’t have a relationship with my grandfather, why did you forbid me from continuing my relationship with Abby?" he asked, his confusion deepening.

"That’s because you come from a big family in this country, while Abigail comes from a small town. Her family couldn’t match yours. I believe your family will oppose your relationship with her..."

Sophie paused to collect her thoughts. Memories of her dark past surfaced in her mind, particularly the time when her future in-laws separated her from the man she loved simply because she came from a poor family.

Knowing that Sawyer also came from a wealthy background, she didn’t want her only granddaughter to experience the same pain.

"I don’t want my granddaughter to suffer if you continue this relationship. So, before you fall even more deeply in love, I hope you will consider breaking up with her."

Sophie’s voice trembled. It pained her to tell Sawyer this, but she believed it was for the best.

Sawyer was taken aback.

"Grandma—" he began, but his words were cut short when he saw Sophie raise her hand to stop him. He clenched his fists, struggling to contain his emotions.

Sophie continued, "I know this isn’t fair to you or Abigail, but I intend to protect my only grandchild from a wealthy family like yours, Sawyer. I’m truly sorry, but I cannot bless your relationship with Abigail if you insist wholeheartedly to continue it."

The words hit Sawyer like a thunderclap, leaving him utterly shaken. He couldn’t understand why Sophie Lewis thought his relationship with Abigail would be doomed. He tried to comprehend her concerns but still struggled to grasp them even after hearing her reasoning.

"Grandma, I don’t know why you despise my family so much, but please, you must trust me..."

His earnest gaze locked with hers as he continued, "I promise you, Abigail will never suffer and will not experience anything like what you worry about. I know I cannot force you to believe me now, but please give me a chance to prove it."

Sophie remained silent, her eyes wavering as she considered Sawyer’s sincerity.

"I promise I will never let her have a miserable life. You must know that everything I’m saying comes from my heart." Sawyer tried to convince Sophie that he truly loved her granddaughter and hoped to make her believe that Abigail would not suffer in the future.

"Sawyer, I trust you... dear, I trust you. I could see and feel how kind and caring you are toward Abby and me," Sophie said sincerely.

From Sawyer’s gaze, she could see how he spoke to her and how sweet he was to bring a gift for their first meeting. In her heart, this young man seemed like a suitable partner for her granddaughter.

However, Sawyer’s good qualities were overshadowed by the fact that he was from the Jones family.

"But I don’t trust your family. Will they accept my granddaughter once they know her background? Do they know about her father? I hope you already heard that Adam Snow, Abigail’s father, is..." Sophie continued to express her concerns.

Sawyer sighed deeply as he listened to Sophie’s unfounded worries. He knew his parents and grandparents loved Abigail very much and how wicked Abigail’s father was. He had even helped Abigail change her last name because she didn’t want to be associated with Adam Snow again.

After hearing all of Sophie’s concerns, Sawyer began to feel a sense of relief.

However, when Sophie saw Sawyer’s smile, she felt confused.

’Did I push him too hard? Is that why he seems stressed? Why is he smiling when he should be feeling sad?’ Sophie wondered.

Immediately, she worried that Abigail might be upset with her for putting Sawyer in this position.

"Oh dear, Sawyer, I’m sorry. I hope you understand what I meant and explained to you. I will pray that you find another woman within your family circle, young man..." Sophie attempted once again to convince Sawyer to move on and forget about Abigail.

Sawyer’s smile grew wider as he heard Sophie, who seemed to have misunderstood him.

"Grandma, are you worried my family won’t accept Abby?" he asked calmly.

"Yes, young man, that is my only concern." Sophie’s expression slowly soured as she recalled how her life had been ruined by the man she once loved, who came from a wealthy family in the capital.

Her future mother-in-law had forced her to end the relationship with the man she loved, using various methods to drive them apart. When Sophie finally gave up on her love and moved to another city, hiding from her relentless future mother-in-law, she discovered that she was pregnant.

From that moment on, her life felt like hell. She couldn’t return to the capital or any large city to pursue her career, so she isolated herself in a village, struggling to find work while raising her daughter.

Although her life was tough at the time, she managed to survive. She gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Amelia, and raised her to be a good person, even without a father figure.

And now, Sophie feels traumatized to learn that Abigail is dating someone from the Jones family. She fears they will treat her only granddaughter the same way she was treated.

Sophie is determined to protect Abigail from the same suffering she experienced.

"Grandma, you don’t need to worry about that. My parents and grandparents adore Abby so much. When they met her, my grandpa and grandma even urged us to get married soon," Sawyer explained happily. He felt a sense of delight when he saw Sophie gasping in shock.

"W-What? Are you serious?" Sophie was taken aback.

How long had they known each other? She remembered they had only met last month. How could Sawyer have already introduced Abigail to his family? And why did his entire family welcome her so warmly?

Sophie felt perplexed. It was hard for her to believe.

’Is Sawyer really Nathaniel Jones’ grandson?’ Sophie wondered. She began to question whether he was the same Jones she had imagined.

"Yes, Grandma..."

Sawyer then explained how Abigail came to his grandparents’ house for dinner.

While in the hospital’s backyard garden, Abigail felt anxious. Her eyes were fixed on her cell phone, waiting for Sawyer to reply to her earlier text.

"Please let me know if you are done!"

"This has been almost thirty minutes. Are you finished? Why is it taking so long?"

She re-read the message countless times, hoping for a response from Sawyer.

However, five minutes after her last text, he still hadn’t replied, and there was no sign he had even read it.

A few times, Abigail considered rushing inside to interrupt and help him escape from her grandmother. Still, Sawyer’s words echoed: "Abby, do you trust me?"

She immediately dismissed the idea.

"I trust you, Sawyer! I should trust you! You need to win Grandma’s heart," she whispered to herself.

Taking a deep breath, Abigail turned her gaze from her cell phone to the beautiful, calm garden surrounding her.

"Buzz!"

The buzzing sound caught her attention.

"Sawyer?" she thought, hurriedly checking her phone for a new text. Her disappointment flashed through her gaze when she discovered that the message was not from Sawyer but from Andy Bennet.
