Chapter 168: Opposition

There was no mana radiating from their body.

Oliver glanced over their body, trying to determine their rank. Even without an aura or mana, his years of experience allowed him to gauge the rank of others.

’Possibly A-rankers,’ Oliver thought.

Just like their boss, the people who came with the general showed contempt when they saw Oliver.

When their eyes met, they raised their noses proudly and squinted.

’Superhumans who are too deep in their shit and have their heads up their asses.’

Oliver had seen many prideful people like this in his life. Most of them overestimate the value of their life and do something stupid that gets them in trouble.

The duo in front of him had no reason to look down at him. And yet, they did.

This means that they were not smart.

’Arrogance and excessive pride are bad qualities. To have people like that as his subordinate, it says a lot about their leader.’

Oliver turned his eyes away from the two military officers to the pot-bellied general.

The general had the aura of a peak A-ranker. Unlike his subordinates, he was displaying it fully without holding back. The weaker ones, for example, Sathyamoorthi and some of the lawyers, struggled to keep a straight face in front of the imposing aura.

’What kind of crazy is he?’

If Thunder Emperor just sneezed, the fatty general would fly out of the conference room.

After all, Thunder Emperor was a real S-ranker, no matter his age.

In front of an S ranker, A rankers were like bugs; they could be squashed at any time.

That is even more true when you consider the pot belly of the general. He did not look like a person who trains his body. In front of the six-foot-tall, muscular Thunder Emperor, this guy was nothing but a worm.

So, what gave him the strength to walk in nonchalantly and mock?

’Of course, it is the military rank and possibly his backing.’

Thunder Emperor was a retired general. His rank could be considered the same as a general, but he took a step back and was slowly building a hidden team to eliminate demons. That was also why he was acting as the headmaster of the military academy.

For years, he has been absent from the military, occasionally appearing when the city needed him.

For the past decade, other than the Mountain King incident that happened a few months ago, he had barely done anything that garnered attention.

So, like everyone else who disappeared from the public eye, his reputation declined because of his absence.

Those who once remembered him for his glorious deeds forgot, while a new generation that never knew him took their place.

The world was moving forward at a pace that cannot be described.

A lot had changed from the moment the gates appeared on this planet.

’Now, even an ugly bastard from who knows where, with the backing of some random dude, began to oppose him...’

’Wasn’t this one of the reasons he was pushed aside in the past?’

When the demons ran rampant, few superhumans could hold their own against them. Thunder Emperor was one of the few.

But he received far too little support from the Hero Association and the military at that time.

Reason?

They decided to support the newly emerged heroes instead of a has-been.

It wouldn’t have mattered in the long run if everything had happened as expected.

Thunder Emperor was not a petty person who would blame someone else for not supporting him.

However, the crux of the problem was...It didn’t happen as they predicted. Half of the heroes humanity pinned their hopes on were demons in disguise.

It was no wonder the world almost went into ruin.

’With shithead holding the rein, no wonder they ended up in an ocean of shit.’

’Somehow, someone convinced everyone that everything was okay even while the world was falling apart.’

’I don’t even have to guess why that happened. The people in power want to maintain their power. So, they would do anything to prevent the power from slipping away from their hand.’

’If the world resists demons together, a war would ensue. In this time of abundant resources, a war was unnecessary.’

’With cities too far apart, governed individually, the centre will lose its control the power over them when a war happens.’

’More importantly, the popularity of the heroes would increase beyond control.’

’If they were not careful, the thoughts of overthrowing the government might also appear along with dissident groups.’

’It would be pure chaos.’

Currently, Oliver and a few people who hate demons are the only ones preparing for the inevitable chaos. The rest want their fictitious peace to persist.

The fat general might be an antibody of sorts; those in power secreted.

Oliver scrutinised the body of the fatty. But no memory of seeing this person resurfaced.

’Maybe he was just an unimportant person. He must have never intended to be in Dragon City at all. Did my action create a butterfly effect that changed the future?’

’If it did, thank you... After all, I don’t want to relive the past.’

While Oliver was immersed in his thoughts, Thunder Emperor took out the letter and carefully read it.

He didn’t look up even for a second, nor did his expression change. He seemed to have predicted something like this to happen.

"Personal use of military fund...That’s embezzlement. It’s a crime. If you had any proof, you could have dismissed me from the military. You don’t need to pull this farce." Thunder Emperor lifted his head and said.

Meanwhile, the general, Park Sanghyun, pulled a chair nearby and sat on it, crossing his legs.

Everyone could see a mocking smile form on his face as his lips curled upwards.

"Farce? Do you think this is a joke? I was sent here to investigate your wrongdoings. Which also means any and all financial transactions after this need to go through me."

The bald head of the general glistened as he looked at the people nearby. The lawyers pulled back and avoided his gaze.

They knew what he meant.

This person, whoever he was, seemed to be against the contract that was about to be signed.

"The reason stated here is this transaction. You suspect I have a stake in the company, World Net and was using it to embezzle money. You also say that I am suspected of doing similar things in the past. Care to elaborate?"

"I don’t have to explain anything to you. That order you are reading is from Central Command. It was a decision they made after careful consideration. If you have any problem with it, go and ask them."

Thunder Emperor nodded.

The last few words of Park Sanghyun, however crude and disrespectful, were accurate. There was no point in arguing with him over it.

"They want me as their dog, and you are the leash. It’s funny how the old codgers at the center think." He said harshly and folded the military order and threw it onto the table.

"Park Sanghyun, why did you really come here?" He asked.

"I came here to monitor you and all financial activities of the camp." He said smugly. "None of the people here dares to oppose you, so the centre thought they needed to step in. After all, with the stunt you pulled a couple of days ago, how can they rest easy leaving you alone, here?"

’What the heck is happening?’

Oliver glanced over to Thunder Emperor’s side.

’Why did the Centre step in right now? And why the hell are they opposing this deal from going through?’

’Damn. My money. All my money. MY MONEY!!!’ Oliver sorrowfully screamed in his mind. freewēbnoveℓ.com

’Now that I think about it, everything was going as planned. That itself should have been a big red flag as to something terrible was about to happen.’

’Fuck.’

Oliver thought about many things, but he didn’t know what caused the sudden change from the military’s side.

Oliver himself was a nobody. Sathyamoorthi was just a scientist.

Together, the technology they were going to provide for military communication was excellent. No, it was more than excellent. It was a unique opportunity that could change the world.

There was no reason for the military to oppose the deal.

’Did I piss of someone I shouldn’t have?’

’When you think about it, I did piss of a lot of people. But none should know it was I who did it. So, there shouldn’t be any retaliation.’

’Wait a minute, didn’t he say...’ Oliver recalled the words Park Sanghyun spoke.

’....with the stunt you pulled a couple of days ago, how can they rest easy leaving you alone, here?’

Oliver’s eyes widened.

His head snapped to look at Thunder Emperor.

’What did he do this time?’ he wondered in doubt.

To receive an answer, he looked at Achara standing next to him. Root was smiling wryly while Achara rubbed her forehead.

"Eh! Did something happen while I was away?" He whispered in her ear.
