Chapter 169: Back Up

Did something happen?

Of course, something happened when Oliver was away.

Thunder Emperor, for some odd reason, decided to go haywire and sent a military order to all bases, requesting that they redo the demon identification tests using the new process. The storm caused by the abrupt order calmed a few days ago. But no one forgot it.

The Centre didn’t like the way he handled it and reprimanded him. There were also attacks from political circles using the media.

It was a difficult situation.

Fortunately, that was the best they could do.

Because of the Thunder Emperor putting everything in public view, they didn’t really have a way to oppose his order.

Wouldn’t directly opposing him put them on the team of demons?

So, they stayed silent for a while.

However, a few days later, the retaliation came in the form of Park Sanghyun.

Achara showed Oliver an embarrassed smile.

She didn’t know how to explain this when they were in the conference room.

She should have done it while they were on their way here.

Achara believed they had plenty of time when she brought Oliver back. Thus, she didn’t speak to him about what happened on Earth.

So, Oliver was still oblivious to the chaos Thunder Emperor caused.

She rubbed her forehead to alleviate the headache.

Then she eyed Oliver, who was looking at her, expecting an answer.

To not cause a scene, she stepped closer to him and whispered in his ear about what happened.

Oliver’s eyes opened wide the moment he heard it. Then it continued widening until he looked like a bullfrog, with half his eyeballs popping outside.

He was pleasantly surprised.

Unlike everyone else, he liked the way the Thunder Emperor handled the situation.

’This guy is almost as crazy as me.’

He was thrilled to know the Thunder emperor was a fellow crazy person.

’If not for the certain bottom lines and inhibitions stopping Thunder Emperor, he would have certainly become someone as bad as me.’ He silently said in his mind with a smile.

Achara didn’t expect that.

Meanwhile, the conversation between Park Sanghyun, the general and Thunder Emperor continued. They threw words around, probing each other to see what the other person’s bottom line is.

Park Sanghyun quickly realised Thunder Emperor was hell bent on signing the contract with WorldNet. So, he became even more opposed to it.

He didn’t care about the money needed to be spent or the significance of the communication system they proposed.

He just decided to oppose it for the fun of it. Just to see Thunder Emperor take a loss.

While they were active, he couldn’t defeat him. So, he decided to defeat the Thunder Emperor now through his power.

As their conversation progressed, Oliver went from slightly pissed to furious. He eyed the military officers and Park Sanghyun, thinking whether he should silently eliminate them.

Truth be told, he had grown in strength to attempt that.

From Oliver’s perspective, anyone can be killed.

With enough preparation, even S-rankers could be killed.

After all, he had used many underhanded methods to kill many people in his past life.

Unlike the world, he didn’t worship the S-rankers, nor did he believe they were unbeatable gods. Anyone can be killed by anyone if you have sufficient resources and time.

So, killing an A-ranker while he was in B-rank didn’t seem like an impossible task to him.

’Should I...’

Last time, in this life, he killed people when he knew they were related to demons.

Today, he didn’t know whether Park Sanghyun was related to demons.

’Why should I care about that? Demon or not, he was being manipulated to destroy everything I planned. My money is at stake.’

Was Park Sanghyun, a nobody whom he couldn’t even remember, worth more than the money?

For Oliver, he was not.

If the death of a damned general could get him the money, he wouldn’t mind doing it.

’...Wait a minute. Would it really be beneficial if I killed him?’

Suppressing his almost instinctual thought of murder, he asked himself the question.

’Was Park Sanghyun’s death really beneficial, or would it cause big problems?’

A general, no matter the strength or ability, was a big deal in the country. He was allowed to lead thousands of people in war and acted like an important pillar of the country.

’His untimely death might actually backfire.’

’The centre would become more suspicious of the Thunder Emperor and ultimately me.’

’In my previous life, I didn’t have other options but murder to get what I wanted. This time it’s different.’

’It’s better to do it the right way because I don’t want to be known as a villain again.’

Becoming a villain means being hunted for perpetuity, leaving his family and failing to protect them. Oliver didn’t want any of that.

So, he had to suppress his thoughts for now.

Unless the Old pot bellied son of bitch does something that directly harms him, he won’t allow himself to run wild.

’If Kai were here, I could have asked for some advice. In the domain of assassination, there was no one better than him.’

Oliver thought and moved to sit on a chair near Sathyamoorthi. As soon as he sat, Root and Achara followed suit to sit near him.

His movement caught the attention of the military officers who were still standing. They glared at him with poisonous eyes as if Oliver’s group had made some grave mistake.

Oliver ignored their gaze and focused on what was happening.

He slowly pulled his face closer to Achara’s face, his breath tingling her neck as he whispered to her.

’Will the contract signing fall through?’

Achara shook her head, almost colliding her face with Oliver’s. However, she was quick to react and stopped just in time.

’Why? Was he prepared for this situation?’ Oliver asked again.

He was eying the Thunder Emperor as he spoke.

’I think so...’

’What do you mean?’

’You will know soon enough.’

’Hm?’

Oliver raised a brow.

Was there more that he didn’t know?

He was about to ask when he saw a smile form on the Thunder Emperor’s face.

For the past few minutes, he was on the passive side, asking questions and barely receiving an answer. Park Sanghyun gave no face as he spoke.

But suddenly, the Thunder Emperor paused and stopped asking any questions.

He tapped the table, thinking about something and grabbed his personal phone. Rapidly, he typed something and sent a message.

Shortly after, the phone began buzzing repeatedly.

"What are you doing? Are you calling for backup? No one in the central command would speak for you after everything you have done." Park Sanghyun scoffed. "Didn’t realise it yet. They don’t like your attempt to grab power. Going on live TV was your biggest mistake. Now, both politicians and the central command don’t like you."

"You should have asked the president for permission before you pull a stunt like that." Park Sanghyun added with a mocking expression.

As a final warning, he even said, "You are not as important as you think."

Hearing all that, the Thunder Emperor didn’t even say a word. He silently waited.

He gave a reassuring nod to everyone and waited.

A few minutes later, someone knocked on the conference room door.

The building they were in was a fortified military building. The conference didn’t have glasses like usual. So, no one could see who was standing outside.

"Come in." As if he expected the knock, the Thunder Emperor asked the person outside to come.

Immediately, the door to the room opened.

Instead of one person, a dozen walked in. These people were in military uniform and had an overwhelming aura to them.

Together, their eyes glanced around, creating a suffocating air.

Most of the officers who appeared were high-ranking ones who were leading the military base of Dragon City.

Park Sanghyun and his cohort felt something crawl over their skin as the aura filled the room.

They could feel the undisguised hostility in their gaze.

"As you said, in this base, no one dares oppose me." The Thunder Emperor began to speak as the officers, one by one, stepped forward and stood behind him. "And...did you think you could?"

His eyes spat fire as he gazed at Park Sanghyun.

The suffocating aura made Park Sanghyun gulp down hard. His eyes glanced around the room.

Despite being a higher rank than everyone, except Thunder Emperor, his eyes showed a hint of fear.

The years of non-combat duty seemed to have made him soft.

Still, forcing down his emotions, he looked at the Thunder Emperor.

"What are you doing?"

His question escaped his lips like a low growl.

He knew that nothing bad would happen to him at the base. Even if the Thunder Emperor was an S-rank general, he had to think twice before hurting him.

Still, never in his wildest dreams did he think he would be shown that much hostility. As someone sent here to represent the centre for an investigation, he never thought he would face fierce opposition.

"Is this a mutiny?" To hide his embarrassment, he asked.

Thunder Emperor smiled.
