Captured By The Cold Detective (BL)-Chapter 62: Woof Woof!
As everyone was being kept busy with their own task, the sky gradually brightened and the first sign of dawn burst out from the horizon, striking a brilliant hue of gold and purple across the sky.
It was a beautiful Sunday morning, yet the atmosphere in the bureau was so stiff as if someone had held a funeral there.
The air was suffused with the thick smell of instant noodles, pig trotters and cigarettes. Officers with dark circles under their eyes were intently staring at the computer screen in front of them. The whole situation was extremely bleak and dreary, interspersed only with the clicks of mouse and keyboard bars.
In story books, the life of a criminal investigator might be action-packed and full of thrill. Hunting down criminals, brandishing a gun, fighting countless battles between life and death... but in fact, the truth was so far from it that it was laughable. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Before they could catch the culprit, the job of a criminal investigator only revolved around gathering evidence; circumstantial evidence, documentary evidence, forensic evidence, testimonial evidence — everything. They needed to construct the complete chain between the culprit’s motive and the modus operandi, murder weapon and the traces left in the crime scene, not even one stone was allowed to be left unturned. As soon as they found the slightest discrepancy, then they had to overturn their conjecture and start from the beginning all over again. It was the repetitive act of scouring after evidence — surveillance footage, mostly — and tried to see if they had missed something.
Very tedious, time-consuming and mentally draining.
But this was an important procedure in order to bring the culprit into jail.
Almost six hours had already passed since they started and it meant they had already entered the crucial phase — 48 hours after Miss Zhao’s death. If they still could not find Long Guozhi, then there was a huge possibility that he had slipped out of Yuyang and hid somewhere else. This was the most unfavorable outcome everyone could wish for!
Amidst the strained silence, an officer cried out shakily, sounding as if he was going to burst out into tears. "I... I found him!"
It was as if someone had pressed a switch. Everyone immediately stood up and the clatter of chairs bumping against other furniture could be heard.
"Y–You found him?!"
"Where is he?! Where is that bastard! Laozi is itching to go out and catch him!"
"Calm down." Li Zhi lit up a cigarette and shot a sharp glare around. "Compress the surveillance and put it on the projector!"
A few minutes later, everyone gathered in the meeting room to scrutinize the surveillance footage. The officer who had first discovered it was standing in front of the podium as he pointed his laser at the figure of a man clad in a thick jacket, knitted hat and mask. "At 2.20 am two days ago, he was caught by CCTV in a convenience store five hundred meters away from the crime scene. He bought a package of cigarettes and then... he went to the public telephone booth to make a call."
The screen in front of them was focused on the slightly hunched man. In a glance, he could not be associated with Long Guozhi who looked so fierce in his olden days. He looked just like an ordinary middle aged man. If not because they were experienced officers who could discern someone’s stature and features despite the guise, it was expected that Long Guozhi would easily escape from observation.
Li Zhi narrowed his eyes. On the screen, Long Guozhi discreetly looked around the desolate street before stumbling into the telephone booth. However, the angle of the camera was very tricky; it was facing Long Guozhi’s back and they had no idea what he was talking about!
Li Zhi cursed under his breath and ordered the technician, "Contact the service provider and find out who he was calling!"
The technician’s expression grew serious as he hurried to execute the command.
During these past six hours, they were not just idling in front of the computers. They had at least gained a lot of important information. For instance, Miss Zhao and Long Guozhi had no connection whatsoever, their paths had not crossed each other even once before!
Second, Deng Shi had totally lost contact with Long Guozhi after he was arrested, fearing that he would be implicated as well. However, he confessed that before this accident happened, the little brothers in District 15 respected Long Guozhi very much because he had a vast extent of network and knew some powerful people. This statement further strengthened their hypothesis that Long Guozhi was controlled by someone behind the scenes! It was not him who had a grudge against Miss Zhao Xinya and wanted her dead, but the person behind him!
That’s why this phone call was very crucial. The person Long Guozhi contacted might very well be the real mastermind behind this homicide case!
As they waited for the result from the service provider, a phone call arrived on Captain Li Zhi’s phone from Kang Guanyu. "Captain, Captain... I found it!!" The man’s excited voice reverberated through the air as the phone was put on speaker.
Li Zhi deadpanned, "You found what?"
After retrieving the surveillance record, Kang Guanyu did not stay to share his brother’s misery and instead, rushed out again to find evidence like a wild horse who could not be reigned.
"Remember what I told you before? Judging from the crime scene, there is a 80% possibility that Miss Zhao’s blood has got to the culprit’s clothes and in order to evade suspicion, he must have discarded it somewhere!" Kang Guanyu spoke quickly and his tone raised higher and higher. It was apparent how thrilled he was right now. "Well, there is a cleaning truck which will go around the apartment area every Tuesday and Friday. I guessed that the culprit must have learned this schedule beforehand and picked a suitable timing to get rid of the evidence. And guess what, I am right!!!" He was practically screaming into the phone right now.
The officers who were listening to the call showed an astonished look.
"Holy shit...! You’re digging your way around the garbage dump?!"
"Kang Guanyu, you’re a man! I will call you father from now on!"
Kang Guanyu was still shouting into the phone. "I found some newly discarded clothes and surgical gloves! There are traces of bloodstains on it! It is most probably Miss Zhao’s. If we’re lucky, we can also find the culprit’s DNA here!!"
Li Zhi clenched his fists as a surge of excitement came over him. It was still not too late yet. Just like Kang Guanyu said, if they were lucky then they would be able to secure indispensable evidence to convict Long Guozhi! As for the real mastermind behind him, you have to catch the mice’s tail first and sooner or later, the head will appear by itself!
Li Zhi quickly controlled his emotions, however his good mood could still be detected from how he teased Kang Guanyu. "Then why are you still digging there and not coming back? Are you a dog?"
Kang Guanyu barked angrily. "Woof woof!" Then he hung up the call.
The atmosphere inside the room was inevitably eased by this new discovery. If the DNA match result is out, then they could directly request for a search warrant to apprehend the culprit!
