Delayed Passion: Miss Lynch's Unrequited Love-Chapter 50: You Have a Chance Now
Silas Cheney agreed with Sean Bell’s earlier remarks; he also didn’t think much of Nina Sinclair, but he was curious why Sean held such animosity towards her.
"You seem to have quite an issue with Nina Sinclair," he asked, feigning casualness.
At the same time, Ian Preston lifted his eyelids, and both men looked at Sean Bell.
Despite receiving Ian Preston’s gaze, sharp as a knife, Sean remained unfazed, having been accustomed to this look from his cousin since childhood.
"I just don’t like her. A minor host trying to get into the Preston Family." Sean was clearly withholding something, but ultimately, he said nothing more.
"Auntie’s taste is somewhat questionable. Among so many good girls, she decided on Nina Sinclair. How about it, Third Brother, should I introduce you to someone? Do you prefer busty or a perky backside?"
Just as he finished speaking, a lighter came flying at his face, but Sean dodged swiftly and caught it steadily with his hand.
"Third Brother, I’m your own brother. If my nose got broken, it would truly ruin my face. How would I find a wife afterward?"
Facing him, Ian Preston sat upright, extinguishing his cigarette forcefully on the table. "Next time you say such things, you might as well not have a mouth."
Sean chuckled awkwardly, not doubting Ian’s seriousness for a moment.
He was the darling of the family, losing his father early and being born prematurely; even when he made mistakes, the elders were lenient. But this cousin of his showed no such sentiment.
Seeing the tension, Silas Cheney stepped in to change the topic, bringing up Thea Lynch.
"How has she been lately?"
"Speaking of which, things have been quite exciting." Silas picked out a few key events to tell Sean. "By the way, isn’t that Rhodes kid still pestering Thea lately?"
"Who?"
"Norbert Rhodes. After meeting Thea on a blind date, he was convinced at first sight, and has been very attentive ever since. Third Brother warned him once last time, but it seems... it didn’t work."
Hearing this, Sean looked at Ian in surprise, wanting to verify the truth.
Silas was the type who mixed truth and falsehood, with hardly a full sentence of truth in his words.
He wondered if Silas had embellished or omitted any key details.
Ian remained unmoved, prompting Sean to frown, "Has Third Brother mellowed in a few months? What good is a verbal warning to such a brat."
Before Ian could respond, Silas tapped the table, reminding them, "Norbert is the treasured son of Mayor Rhodes, don’t get any wrong ideas."
Just when Sean was about to speak, he saw Ian glance over as well, his voice low and laden with warning, "Nobody’s going to clean up your mess."
The unexpected seriousness from Ian and Silas made sense, considering Sean really did lose control once before.
Despite his scholarly demeanor, as a child raised in the courtyard, he surely had some skills.
Among all, except for the eldest Lynch brother, Sean was the fiercest fighter. While the eldest Lynch brother knew where to stop, Sean always fought viciously.
Back in his senior year, Sean fought with someone at school, nearly taking their life. Ian arrived from abroad, confronting his brother sternly for the first time; if their grandfather hadn’t intervened, Sean would likely have ended up with a broken leg.
Both the Bell and Preston families had to utilize their influence to settle that matter.
But why Sean fought back then remained a mystery. So many had asked over the years, yet no one could pry open his mouth.
Silas was still uneasy, "You’d better behave. He’s not like when his dad first transferred here, you cannot touch that Rhodes kid."
The Rhodes Family wasn’t originally from Coronet; they settled in the city years ago due to Norbert’s father’s job transfer. Initially, the Rhodes Family had little influence, but now they were rising rapidly.
The Rhodes Family having just one son meant that if anything happened, the Rhodes couple would fight tirelessly.
By then, there would be quite the headache.
——
The next morning, Thea Lynch was busy, her phone ringing incessantly beside her. Her assistant asked if she wanted to take the call.
"Whose call is it?"
Her assistant glanced at the caller ID, "Unknown number, local to Coronet."
"Go ahead and answer, put it on speaker. It’s probably a sales call."
The assistant did as asked, "Who are you looking for?"
The person on the other end hesitated, "Norbert Rhodes?"
"You must have the wrong number, there’s no one by that name here."
"I’m looking for Thea Lynch, isn’t this her number?"
"Oh, it is." The assistant looked at Thea, simultaneously asking, "Who are you? Foreman Lynch is busy. Can I pass on a message?"
The person also asked, "Who are you?"
"..." The assistant was speechless for a moment, about to respond when a hand reached over to take the phone.
Thea handed a document to him, "Take this to Foreman Chandler and the others."
The assistant acknowledged, taking the document while looking back with every step as he left.
Thea pulled over a chair and sat down, switching off the speaker before placing the phone to her ear, "Looking for me?"
"Thea Lynch?" The caller confirmed the voice again, particularly fixated on the male voice from earlier, "Who answered the phone just now?"
"My assistant."
"A male assistant."
"Is that a problem?"
"From his voice, he doesn’t seem like a good person."
"Heh." Thea sneered, "That depends on who you compare him with. Compared to you, he’s still a good person."
"That joke wasn’t funny."
"Who said I was joking? It’s the truth."
"Tsk." The caller was slightly displeased, pausing for a while before responding, "Just as Silas said."
Thea didn’t need to ask to guess Silas hadn’t said anything good.
"What do you want from me? I have work to do."
"Did you recognize who I am?"
"It’s hard not to."
"In that case, come out for a meal."
"I’m busy with work."
"How much can you make? Hurry, I’m downstairs at your company. If you don’t come out, I’ll barge in. I wonder if the security Silas hired can actually fight."
"..."
Ten minutes later, at a nearby tea restaurant.
Thea returned the menu to the waiter, "Just these."
"Alright, please wait a moment."
Retracting her gaze, Thea looked across at the man. After a few years apart, Sean Bell didn’t seem to have changed much.
Still wearing glasses, dressed in a casual suit, he looked scholarly and polite. Unfortunately, that appearance was all a facade.
Meeting her gaze, Sean Bell was also assessing her. After a moment, he generously complimented, "You’ve gotten even prettier."
Thea automatically ignored his compliment.
"Did you just return to Coronet?"
She asked casually.
"I landed last night. If Silas hadn’t dragged me out for drinks, I would’ve visited you then."
He had wanted to see Thea as soon as he landed, but was intercepted by Silas on the way.
He could unhesitatingly blow off Silas, but not Third Brother.
"Talking about me?"
Sean Bell nodded lightly at her, smirking, "We also talked about that woman, Nina Sinclair. Third Brother said he won’t marry her, so you have a chance now."
