Chapter 103: A Divided Family

The doctor stepped out of the room after examining Mallory for nearly an hour.

"Her anxiety kicked in and overwhelmed her. I have prescribed some medicines to take, but I doubt she isn’t already on the medications." The doctor announced. freewebnoveℓ.com

"Doctor can I go inside and see her?" Amanda asked.

The doctor nodded and stepped aside for her to go inside. Amanda and her husband went inside to see their daughter, accompanied by Malcolm and his wife, Rosalind.

The rest of the family were made to wait outside, not that any of them cared to check on her in the first place.

"Matthew." His grandmother called out, "Did you know anything about this? About the Rosamunds and your brother’s marriage?" Sophia asked.

Matthew shook his head, "I’m just finding out about everything myself-"

"Tsk! Do you ever know anything?" She hissed and marched away furiously.

Her sons, Edward and Rowan followed sharply, with William in tow. Desmond however hung back, his lips curled into a mischievous grin.

"Hey, you were the one calling my brother shameless a moment ago, but look at this, I can’t believe your father was so shameless to have a marriage planned to secure the inheritance. What a joke." He laughed.

Matthew balled his fists. "Desmond I am not above smacking your fucking face into this door."

Desmond rolled his eyes. "Do you seriously think I’m scared of you? In case you haven’t noticed Mathew, everyone in this family knows you’re all bark. If it wasn’t for your older brother, grandfather wouldn’t spare a glance at the illegitimate side of the family-"

Matthew grabbed him by the collar and shoved him against the wall. "I fucking dare you to say that again!"

Desmond groaned, "Let me go!" He tried peeling Matthew’s grip off, but it was no use, his cousin was infamous for his strength.

With all the training he did in his free time it was no wonder he resorted to violence in almost every circumstance.

"I said, I dare you to call us that one more time!" Matthew demanded.

"It’s true isn’t it? Grandma said so! If your whoring-" his words were cut off when the doctor returned with two staff members to break up the fight.

"You two, that’s enough!" The doctor sternly alerted them, standing in-between them. He took off his glasses and pushed back his long locks of brown hair.

"Seriously, why the hell am I always stuck babysitting you two?" Maverick asked, staring down at his two cousins.

Matthew hissed, "He fucking started it-"

Maverick cut him off, "Go walk a mile and cool your ass off. The people inside are the Rosamunds, and they’re every much a big a deal as our family is. Understand?"

Matthew parted his lips to protest, but heaved a sigh and did as he was told. Out of all his cousins, the only one he listened to was Maverick, and for good reason too.

Desmond straightened his shirt, "Why did you step in? I was about to put that illegitimate in his place-" halfway through his sentence, Maverick grabbed him forcefully by both cheeks, and sent him a nasty glare.

"Take a hike, and don’t make me say it twice." He ordered.

Just like Matthew, Desmond was forced to comply to his older cousin’s command, although, he loathed the idea.

Just like his father, Rowan, Maverick was passive about the inheritance, so no one saw him as a threat.

But, that didn’t mean they weren’t always on their guard around him. He was, by level of IQ the most intelligent person in the family, and no one wanted to be on his bad side.

In fact, there was a silent struggle to reign him in as an ally to the two opposing sides vying for the inheritance.

Watching them both leave, Maverick reached into his coat and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. He stole one glance at his uncle and aunt through the door, then left to go out for a quick smoke.

Inside, the Rosamunds were not pleased with the sudden change of plans.

"Malcolm, do you think I’m allowed bark? You dare embarrass me like this?" Godfrey demanded, his skin turned pink with anger.

"I don’t know what to tell you. This is all news to me-"

Amanda chimed in, "It seems that you can’t keep your sons in check, perhaps the rumours are true, that the inheritance won’t be going to your faction of the family."

Rosalind scoffed, "You believe those rumours? Do you think my Thane is second to William?"

Godfrey responded, "If he rejects my Mallory, then he is." He turned to Malcolm, "I won’t also take this humiliation lying down if he doesn’t explain himself."

Rosalind explained. "My son has always been... different, but that certainly is part of his allure. I mean, he was able to charm your daughter within a short span of time. He does things in a roundabout way, but he doesn’t make mistakes."

Godfrey folded his arms. "What are you insinuating?"

"That this marriage could just be a ploy he came up with to keep his grandfather from making a match for him." She responded, "Right, honey?"

Malcolm nodded, "That woman doesn’t look familiar, he must’ve picked a random actress to play the role. I’ll have my people look into her career, I’m sure if I throw a bone her way she’ll wag her tail in any direction we want."

Godfrey raised his chin, "You’d better. I mean, this marriage will be beneficial to your faction the most. Edward is shameless and crafty, and although I loathe his kind, I wouldn’t want to stand on the losing side, this is my daughter’s life and my reputation we’re talking about."

"And I assure you that all this will be resolved in a matter of hours. So have your daughter get ready once she wakes up, we’ll hold the engagement as soon as possible." Malcolm announced, determined to do anything not to lose the fight for the inheritance.
