Chapter 106: Alone On The Wedding Night

After disclosing most of the family dynamic to Brooke, Matthew expected her to back out of her relationship with his brother and return home.

"You see why you can’t stay? Thane has remained infallible because he was always very guarded and had no weakness, but with you here, he’s vulnerable. If you want the best for him, you’ll stay away." He told her as he took out his phone from his pocket.

"I’ll have a flight arranged-" his words were cut off by Brooke’s interjection.

"I’m not leaving him, Matthew."

Matthew groaned, "Did you not understand a word of what I just said?"

"I do understand, and I know that leaving would be the right choice to make-"

"Then why don’t you make it? Why would you choose to stay despite knowing you’re placing him at a disadvantage?" He demanded harshly.

Brooke huffed, "I guess, the apple really doesn’t fall far from the tree. I used to think that I have nothing in common with my family, but it seems that not the case." She raised her gaze from her lap and fixed it tightly on Matthew.

"The reason I won’t leave? It’s simple, I’m being selfish."

Matthew echoed, "Selfish?"

She nodded, "I don’t want to leave Mr Grayson, I like his company, he’s kind, compassionate and the only person I feel safe around. And while I know that I’m not worthy to stand next to him, I still want to try." She balled her fingers into tight fists, steeling her resolve.

Matthew couldn’t believe what he was hearing, ’I had pegged this woman for a mindless pushover, but it seems that’s she’s more crafty than I thought. Thane, you’ve really outdone yourself with this one.’ he scoffed at the thought.

Slipping his phone back into his pocket, he relaxed his shoulders, "Fine, do whatever you want, but don’t say I didn’t warn you." He sauntered over to the door, and reached for the handle.

"Matthew," Brooke called out to him.

He hung his hand on the handle and looked over his shoulder, "What?"

"Please, try to make up with your brother." She said all of a sudden.

He laughed, "What? You think I’m after the inheritance too? Sorry, but I’m not good enough to put up a decent fight against your husband."

Brooke’s heart skipped a beat when Matthew called Thane hers.

Matthew placed a foot out the door but halted his steps when he heard Brooke say.

"You look up to him, don’t you?"

Matthew parted his lips to say something, but he changed his mind and dashed out of the room, closing the door gently behind him.

Brooke sighed in relief once he left, her hands fell to her neck, and touched the parts Matthew had strangled in the past.

She wasn’t entirely comfortable being alone with him, but she knew he wouldn’t do anything to her that would upset his brother.

She just didn’t know for certain if that was because he was afraid of Thane, or if he maybe, deep down somewhere didn’t want to disappoint his older brother.

Unlike Cassie’s deep rooted resentment and jealousy towards her, she got the feeling that Matthew might not purely be jealous of his brother.

Fondling her ring against her skin she moaned, "Mr Grayson, where are you?"

It was technically their wedding night, and Thane was no where to be found. She figured that when he came back, she would apologize for acting that way, and clear the air between them.

But now, she feared that she had scared him off.

And the last thing she wanted was to be alone on her wedding night.

"I’ve already had to go through that once." She mused, recalling her uneventful wedding night with Ethan.

She shook her head, dismissing the thought, "Mr Grayson...where are you?" She asked, contemplating whether or not to go out and look for him.

The door to the room was pushed open, and in came Maverick, who had changed into a casual pair of black pants and a fitted brown turtle neck shirt that highlighted his slim waist and broad shoulders.

"Am I interrupting?" Maverick asked, eyeing the two.

Thane sighed, "I was just leaving."

Mallory’s face flushed with embarrassment, "Thane, I-" she tried to call out to him, but he ignored her and dashed out of the room.

She tried to get up, but Maverick shook his head, "Don’t worry your head over this, just get some sleep. I’ll talk to him."

Mallory’s eyes watered, "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset him."

He replied, "I know."

She sniffled, "Please, don’t tell anybody I said that, I just wanted to let it out of my system. I didn’t mean anything of it." She tried to explain herself, but surprisingly Maverick was calm.

He nodded, "Sweet dreams." He greeted, then went after his cousin.

Fortunately, he was able to catch Thane about to get into the elevator and went in as well before the doors came together.

"I’m hurt you know, I thought I was your favorite cousin. How come I didn’t get an invite to your wedding?" Maverick asked in a teasing tone.

Thane narrowed his eyes. "Don’t assume things."

Acting surprised, Maverick asked, "I taught you how to play chess, and basically groomed you into the biotechnologist you are today. Why wouldn’t I be your favorite cousin?"

Retaining his demeanor Thane replied with a question, "For what reason?"

Maverick’s smile flattened into a serious expression, "You still don’t trust my intentions? How cautious you are, I taught you well."

"Everyone in this house has an agenda, I am just yet to discover yours." Thane said.

"Maybe it’s because I have none." Maverick suggested, but Thane’s suspicion did not let up.

As the elevator reached the top floor, Maverick asked a final question, "Have you spoken to Zelda?"

Thane’s bored features contorted into a slightly stunned expression.

He shook his head, "No."

"Have you told your wife about what happened?" He asked, but Thane didn’t respond.

"You should." Maverick said as he watched his cousin step out of the elevator.

To himself, Maverick muttered, "That is, if you want to protect her."
