Demon CEO's Hidden Love: Mr Grayson Stole Me From My Abusive Husband-Chapter 107: A Spineless Husband
Chapter 107: A Spineless Husband
Maverick pulled over at his parent’s mansion, where certain enough, the voices of his parent’s bickering greeted him at the front door.
"Are you even a man, Rowan?!" His wife, Sloane spat out, dressed in a black and silver sleeping robe.
Rowan reached for the bottle of alcohol and attempted to pour it’s content into a shot glass. But Sloane snatched the bottle out of his hand, earning a frown out of her husband.
"Do you think getting drunk will get you out of this? Malcolm has made his move! He got his vegetable son married, this is the time to do something-"
Rowan banged his fist on the table, "I’ve told you already, I don’t have any intention of getting the inheritance! Edward and Malcolm can go at each other’s throats for all I care!"
Sloane laughed humourlessly, "Why did I have to marry the spineless son? While that bitch Laura got Edward?"
"If you loved my brother so much, why did you marry me then?!" He raised his voice, acting out from his withdrawal.
Noticing his father’s anger rising, Maverick stepped in and took the bottle out of his mother’s hand.
"Here." He handed it to his father, who swiftly chugged a mouthful straight from the bottle.
"Ugh!" Sloane ran her fingers through her hair, watching her alcohol addicted husband seek solace at the bottom of a bottle.
"Maverick! I’ve told you to stop spoiling your father!" She spat out, "If only you and your sister sided with me, instead of cradling this good-for-nothing drunk! Then maybe, just maybe we would have a better chance at the inheritance!"
Maverick rested his hands on his mother’s shoulders, "Mother, you’re frowning again. What did I say about that? Do you want to age faster? I’m already seeing signs of wrinkling on your forehead." He gently crooned.
Sloane collapsed into her son’s embrace, "It’s your foolish father! How can he sit back and let his brothers take everything? He works just as hard at the company, we deserve the wealth!"
Rowan rolled his eyes, "You’re just never satisfied. Just yesterday you wanted a new car because Malcom gifted Rosalind a car."
He snorted, "Just the other day, you asked for a designers, because Laura got one. You’re too greedy-"
Sloane cut him off. "Can you blame me for wanting things my own husband won’t get me?!" She snapped at him.
Rowan snapped back, "You don’t need these things-"
"What I need is for my husband to open his eyes and see that we’ll be reduced to beggars if either Edward or Matthew gain the upper hand. Maverick," she turned to her son.
"Do something! If not for my sake, do it for Anna’s sake." She pleaded, bringing up his younger sister.
Maverick nodded and kissed her forehead, "Alright mother, I’ll speak to father. Get some sleep, okay?"
"Thank you, son." She said, then retired upstairs.
Once she left, Rowan held the bottle to his son, "Care for a drink with your old man?"
Maverick shook his head, "What do you think grandmother will say if she finds out her soft-spoken son is an addict?"
"That’s why you won’t say a word to her, right son?" Rowan smiled, already fully intoxicated.
His son replied politely, "Of course, I have no reason to."
Drunk, his father asked, "What does that mean? Would you snitch on your old man if you had a reason?" He laughed at the thought.
Maverick smiled, "Good night father." He greeted, then went upstairs to retire.
Ethan dashed out of his office, leaving behind a pile of unfinished work for Jen on her desk.
The moment he was out of the office, she retrieved the file she had been working on and stared critically at it.
The letters ’resignation’ were spelled boldly, and it made her stomach churn.
"Knock, Knock."
Startled, Jen clicked the file away and raised her head, her shoulders tensed and unrelaxed. "Yes?"
Avery made a face, "It’s just me, Jen." She said, walking over with two cups of coffee. fгee𝑤ebɳoveɭ.cøm
Jen pulled down on her sleeves, to hide the purplish hue peeking out of it. "Sorry, I was just really immersed in what I was doing."
Avery took a glance at the mountain of files, "I can only imagine why." Her sarcastic voice said, while passing Jen a cup of coffee.
"We’re going out for barbecue and drinks tonight, everyone said to ask if you can make it." Avery brought up, leaning against her desk.
Jen shook her head, "I’ll have to pass, I’m very busy tonight-"
"Come on, the boss just left, and I don’t think he’ll be back until tomorrow." Avery reasoned.
"I can’t, maybe another time-"
Avery cut her off, "Jen, level with me okay. You’ve been acting strange for a while now. You’ve even started dressing weirdly, everyone is worried but no one wants to say anything." Avery looked here and there, before leaning in and whispering into her ear.
"This has something to do with the boss, doesn’t it?"
Jen bit her lip, was it okay to say it? Could she tell Avery? Or anybody at all?
Avery set her cup down and reached for her palms, "Jen, you can trust me, I’m always here for you. Right from our first day as interns, so don’t be scared and tell me what’s going on with you. I’m worried."
Jen’s eyes watered, "Avery I-"
"What are you ladies talking about?" Ethan’s voice piped up from behind them.
Jen quickly retracted her hand and hid them under the table.
Avery noticed this and raised a brow. Acting natural, she turned to Ethan, and flashed him a smile, "Sir, I thought you left and came to deliver Jen a cup of coffee."
Ethan circled over to them, his eyes trained strictly on Jen. "I forgot my phone, and came back for it."
"Jen," he called out, "Come into the office, help me find my phone."
Jen turned pale at his request, she noticed his clenched fists, and knew she was in trouble. "Y-Yes, sir." She got up, and went into the office.
Avery narrowed her eyes, convinced that something was wrong.
Forcing a smile, Ethan said, "And you, I’d advise you to go back to your department, and focus on your work properly."
He hardened his tone, "Don’t ever come up here again." He ordered in an unforgiving tone.
