Chapter 698: Ostrich mentality

Looking at Mahomes’ crestfallen face, Li Wei couldn’t help but tease him, “Not even once?”

Mahomes suddenly looked up, staring at Li Wei with a sense of despair.

Li Wei didn’t mind, instead, he showed a smile, “Have you ever thought that it’s precisely because there was never a ‘once,’ that when the text came, you couldn’t help but hesitate?”

Mahomes was startled; he didn’t understand, feeling as though he had been led into a maze.

Li Wei had no choice but to explain, “It’s like how people often hesitate before getting married because it’s a major life decision. Even though you can divorce after marriage, wouldn’t it be better to grow old together if you could marry just once? So, when facing major decisions, we tend to overthink.”

“It’s the same for you.”

...

“You’re committed to Brittany without a second thought; but precisely because of this, you haven’t explored other possibilities or appreciated different sceneries, so when temptation comes, you waver.”

“It’s not that you really hesitated, you just couldn’t help but take a longer look.”

“So.”

“You need to tell Brittany the truth because indeed nothing happened, and you weren’t planning to hide anything.”

The words hung there.

But Mahomes seemed to need some time to digest everything and couldn’t snap back to reality right away.

In Li Wei’s memory, this was the first time Mahomes and Brittany had a serious argument in the two years he had known Mahomes.

It was not surprising that Mahomes needed more time to process the complex information.

From another perspective, relationships that have never faced arguments are often more fragile, because conflicts are like icebergs hidden under the sea—they’re not visible, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. The seemingly calm surface can be brewing a crisis that’s beyond saving. A timely argument can trigger the crisis earlier, allowing issues to be resolved bit by bit.

Sighing deeply, Mahomes still couldn’t sort out his thoughts, “Rookie, can you talk to Brittany for me? Tell her that you spend every day with me, that you know I haven’t done anything to stray from the path.”

“Of course, no problem,” Li Wei readily agreed.

“But.”

“Sherlock, in Brittany’s eyes, am I a good friend or a bad friend? Will she believe me? Or does she think I led you astray?”

Mahomes: Uh…

Li Wei shrugged lightly, “If she needs, I’m always ready to vouch for you. In fact, our whole team respects and cherishes your commitment to love, and we are looking forward to you being the representative who clears the reputation that all professional athletes are philanderers.”

“Not everyone is like Travis.”

Kelsey: ??? Where did this unwarranted accusation come from?

After pondering for a while, Mahomes still felt like his brain was a tangled mess, and it was hard to come up with an explanation, “Rookie, can I stay at your place for a few days?”

“Brittany… I’m not sure how many days she will stay here.”

Li Wei showed a smile, “Sherlock, you should be glad that Brittany is willing to stay. That means she doesn’t want to leave amidst the conflict.”

“Because she knows that once she leaves Kansas City now, it will be harder to continue communicating. She’s a smart girl.”

“So, this is a good thing.”

“You’ll sleep in my guest room, that will make playing out a scene of Romeo and Juliet a bit easier. The sheets and duvet covers should be in the guest room closet, all washed, dried, and tidied up by my mom the last time. Do you need help finding them?”

Mahomes waved his hands repeatedly, “No, no need, I’ll manage.”

Immersed in his own thoughts, Mahomes didn’t quite catch the sound of Li Wei’s footsteps as he walked to his own bathroom, facing a soul-searching question:

How on earth did things get to this point?

When Li Wei came out of the shower, changed, Mahomes had already unpacked his carry-on and settled into the guest room.

Li Wei looked at the absent-minded Mahomes and thought for a moment, “I’m planning to visit a friend in the hospital, do you want to come along?”

“Speaking of friends, you know him, it’s Felix Gray, the boy whose bone cancer came back. Seventeen years old?”

“After the game finished yesterday, he invited me to visit his friends at the hospital, a group of fans who are fighting against cancer.”

“I called Travis to meet up at the hospital.”

“I wasn’t planning to invite you originally, thinking today is a day off and you could enjoy some quality time with Brittany. But now…”

“Are you going to stew over things and then talk to Brittany when you go back; or…”

Before Li Wei could finish, Mahomes had already stepped ahead and interrupted, answering with actions, “The hospital? Which hospital? I’ll drive.”

Ostrich mentality.

Li Wei could understand, although deep down he knew what he should do, it’s easier said than done. The tendency to evade was still inevitable.

Maybe, this was a better solution.

After all, Mahomes had just left his home, and now both of them were emotionally charged. Giving some time and space before they say things they would regret later might help them to cool down a bit.

Kelsey arrived at the hospital earlier than planned.

He knew Li Wei’s schedule, unchangeable as thunder, and if he didn’t pay attention, he might be late; even though today’s visit didn’t have media presence and was purely a personal visit, not a public relations event coordinated by the team, being late was still undesirable, at the very least, it was about showing the right attitude.

So he set the alarm, scheduled the time, and Kelsey arrived early.

Indeed, as he parked the car in the parking lot and was contemplating how to greet Li Wei with a superior posture and tease him for being late, Li Wei had already arrived.

Kelsey hurriedly braced his left hand on the car roof, with his right leg as his pivot point and his left leg in front, tiptoeing on the ground, ready to greet Li Wei in Bugs Bunny’s signature pose; but the words that came out were surprisingly different.

“How did he come along?”

Kelsey’s focus shifted completely and he did not bother with teasing anymore.

Mahomes was somewhat constrained, unsure of how to explain.

Fortunately, Li Wei helped out, “He came specially to steal your thunder.”

Kelsey didn’t mind at all, “Haha, for that he might need to be reborn. With my handsome face and outstanding charm, all you can do is envy.”

“Hey, don’t envy, to envy is to lose.”

Li Wei’s voice came quietly, “Ignore him and he’ll turn into a fool.”

Pfft.

Mahomes couldn’t hold back.

Kelsey watched as Li Wei and Mahomes bypassed him and no longer cared about putting on airs; he quickly took large strides to catch up, “No need to envy, don’t worry, I will tone down the shine a bit to prevent you guys from being overlooked.”

“Thank you.” Li Wei actually responded with a full-faced smile.

Mahomes suddenly saw Kelsey’s stiff expression—

Laughter erupted like thunder.

The three of them left the parking lot laughing and chattering, taking the elevator upstairs.

Upon entering the hospital, the atmosphere made them quiet down; whiteness filled their view everywhere, making even their steps soften.

In a blink, they were getting closer to the oncology department, it seemed as if they could feel the shadow of the Grim Reaper looming, making the world seem more sacred, yet also more cold and forbidding.
