The only place where someone with a trait like that could possibly hide for such a long period of time was the water treatment plant, but that wasn’t the only reason why Uriel thought that was the case. It was located right in between the east city gate and the synthetic food processing factory.

Uriel had no clue of what circumstances could lead a hunter to hide for such a long period of time, so he assumed that the woman just fled to wherever she felt the safest, in other words, the nearest body of water. That also meant that she probably died on the run, but that that didn’t change anything, because he wasn’t actually looking for her but for the cryptid that killed her. Deep inside, Uriel was thankful that the huntress was an evolved, because that meant that whatever cryptid killed her had to be a beast or at most a monster rank since entities showed little to no interest in going out of their way to kill evolved hunters. Such small meal was of no use to them unless in big numbers and they weren’t even worth the energy of the chase.

Entering the water treatment plant was easy. There were no guards or any safety measures since there was nothing to steal in there, and even if someone wanted to taint the waters for whatever reason, it would have been pointless. In the old times, water was purified using high technology or complex structures that took advantage of physics.

It was a long and complicated process that started with pre sedimentation and finished with disinfection, but now all it took was a bunch of people with control over the water element.

The water treatment plant was nothing but a place that collected the black waters on one side and turned them into drinking water which was stored in a huge reservoir. Unfortunately for Uriel, the stench that came from the black waters was almost unbearable and he was forced to spend some trites on a heavy duty gas mask from his souvenir shop.

"At least it looks cool..." Uriel muttered to himself as he ventured inside.

The building was made mostly of concrete reinforced with alloy, but the floor was an alloy framework that drained the water and caused a clanging sound whenever Uriel took a step. The place was dark and there was nothing but water on sight, the place seemed calm but Uriel had a gut feeling things weren’t as they seemed.

Just to make sure, Uriel attempted to turn on a flashlight, but just as he suspected, it didn’t work.

"Dammit, I was fearing this was the case... but if I don’t find anything and I’m calling it quits. There’s no way I’m swiming in sewer water." He said as he undressed, then he took a deep breath and took off his mask to dive in the drinking water pool.

Swiming was a rare skill among hunters, at least on this particular megacity. The reason for that was obvious, being so close to a lost city meant there was no need to hunt in the ocean which, not only was more dangerous, but also way less profitable. But thanks to Uriel’s adventure in Easter Island, he was now an expert swimer and he was also able to hold his breath for a long period of time.

Unfortunately for him, things weren’t as easy as he expected. Since the flashlight didn’t work the only other light available was that of his gas lantern, but it wouldn’t work under water. His mystical sense would still be able to pick on the cryptid’s energy signature, but only if they were active. When resting, even the strongest cryptid was absolutely invisible to his mystical sense.

Without any other choice, Uriel entered his souvenir shop and looked for alternatives. There were many water proof flashlights, but they worked with electricity too which meant they were as useless as the gas lantern.

’How did people even see underwater before electricity?’ As an archaeologist, he knew the answer to that question, it was just that he didn’t like the answer. Before the first dive flashlight was invented near 1970, there was no way of lighting underwater and even then, they only worked under a moderate depth.

Being unable to see underwater was precisely one of the reasons why it was so dangerous to dive and even among those brave enough to do so, they wouldn’t dare going too deep.

Uriel browsed through his souvenir shop while holding his breath underwater, until he found what he was looking for. In the sports section of his souvenir shop he was able to find fluorescent sticks and diving gear, though he discarded most of the scubba gear and only kept the oxygen tank, the regulator and the googles.

’That’s better.’ He inwardly thought once the air filled his lungs. The sound of his breathing was all he could hear and it gave him a peaceful sensation. He felt weightless, free and serene, but that only lasted until he snapped one of the chemical luminiscent sticks and the face of a horrid creature was revealed right in front of him.

It was a strange creature that looked like a fanged maw with a fish tail, its red eyes were barely visible. Uriel quickly covered his face with both hands, letting go of the glowstick in the process and braced himself for a painful bite, though nothing happened.

When he opened his eyes again and snapped another luminiscent stick he realized the cryptid was already dead and in the process of vanishing. Not just that, the bottom of the tank was carpeted with beast rank flux orbs.

Uriel’s confusion turned into shock once he saw an impossible creature in front of him. Its bottom half was that of a fish, but the other half left him in utter shock, so much so that he panicked and in spite of his strong desire to dive deeper and grab all the flux orbs on the bottom.
