Ren didn’t know how fast three days could pass until his break ended. It seemed too short a break before what he’d dubbed the final battle in the privacy of his mind.

But at the end of the day, it didn’t matter. The time for waiting had ended. Tonight, Thorn and Ren would cut off the final head of the hydra.

While the inner city was much quieter than the outer city, it was much easier to sneak around. This was due to the fact that while the outer city had more patrolling guards, the inner city relied on the home owner’s personal guards.

The nobles and rich merchants did like their privacy.

While the streets were bathed in the light of the street lanterns, Ren and Thorn moved through the dark present on the rooftops. While guards guarded the properties around them, they rarely looked up.

Before long, they got to their destination.

The large mansion was still how they’d left it. There were no guards standing in formation outside, no servants rushing in and out through the back doors.

It was eerily silent, an invitation disguised as an absence.

Ren and Thorn crouched on the rooftop of a neighboring building, scanning their target.

As usual, the windows were mostly dark, save for the flickering of candlelight in the upper floors.

"This is most definitely a trap." Thorn whispered.

"And it doesn’t change what we have to do." Ren replied, green eyes narrowing.

"Are you sure about this?"

"We have no other options. We’re going in."

Thorn exhaled. "Alright. Let’s do this."

With that, they moved.

Slipping down the wall, they avoided the main entrance and instead pried open a side window, stepping into the darkened halls of the mansion.

The silence was eerie. No servants, and no sounds of anything living, moving through the place.

The Penny Prince yawned from where he sat. He’d been waiting for three days and the attacker still hadn’t arrived. "This is getting boring." He mused.

At least, he’d gotten to see the basement sitting room at Giles’ place. He chuckled to himself, looking around the place. It was surprisingly cozy. "Who helped you design this place? I’d like to have one designed at my place."

"The Fixer had some people come and install it for me, my lord." Giles answered from where he sat.

"I see." The Penny Prince nodded to himself. "Even more reason to teach that assassin a lesso—"

He paused.

"Is there something wrong, my lord?" Giles asked, sensing the shift.

"Ha!" The Penny Prince chuckled. "It seems our guests have arrived."

"Guests?"

"They were two all along." He stood, picked up his mask, and placed it on his face. "Let’s go give them a warm welcome."

Ren and Thorn crawled through the place, moving as cautiously as possible. Where was the trap? Shouldn’t it have been deployed by now?

As they both stepped into a long hallway, his questions were answered.

"Welcome!" Standing at the far end of the hallway were two figures. "I was wondering when you’d finally come."

Ren and Thorn halted, watching their opponents.

Giles stood calmly, arms crossed, with his sword sheathed on his back. And standing slightly in front of him was a man wearing an elaborate wooden mask with a crown carved at the top.

The Kingpin.

Ren clenched his fist. So, this was the trap. Kingpin himself. He should’ve expected this.

"You know," Kingpin said, taking a slow step forward, "I was hoping for something more dramatic. Some kind of grand entrance. But instead, you slip in like rats in the dark. Kinda disappointing."

Ren didn’t respond. His mind was already measuring the hallway, the walls, the exits, and the inevitable attacks that would come.

Besides, this was one of the earlier rules he’d laid down with Thorn. Talking would mean revealing their voice. And someone could use it to identify them later on.

"Not much of a talker, are you?" The Kingpin tilted his head. "That’s fine. We can communicate in other ways."

Giles cracked his knuckles. "Been looking forward to this."

Ren and Thorn exchanged a glance. There was no more need for words.

They attacked.

Thorn lunged at Giles, his daggers flashing in the dark as he struck low. Giles unsheathed his sword and deflected with ease, retaliating with a brutal kick that sent Thorn sliding back.

Ren closed the distance between himself and the Kingpin in a blink, striking high with his blade. The Kingpin sidestepped fluidly, his wooden mask tilting slightly.

"Fast." Kingpin mused, barely dodging another slash. "But not fast enough."

He snapped forward and his fist slammed into Ren’s forearm with such force that it sent a shockwave up his arm.

Ren skipped backward in response, barely avoiding the follow-up elbow aimed at his ribs.

Beside them, Thorn and Giles crashed through a wooden partition, sending splinters flying as they rolled into another room.

Ren crouched before pouncing, he and Kingpin moving with the brutality that came from looking death in the eyes, neither using their Bloodbound abilities to avoid revealing too much.

It was pure, physical combat.

Ren ducked under a heavy blow, snapping forward to twist his dagger into Kingpin’s ribs, but the man’s knee snapped upward, hitting Ren’s wrist and sending his dagger skittering to the ground.

Ren dodged forward and to the side, rolling to his feet and slashing at Kingpin’s back.

Kingpin dodged at the last second, spinning and delivering a brutal knee to Ren’s gut, sending him crashing through a nearby wooden railing and into an adjacent study.

Ren groaned, rolling to his feet just as Kingpin stepped through the broken remains of the railing. "Clever trick." The masked man said. "But not clever enough."

Meanwhile, Thorn was struggling.

Giles was relentless, forcing him back with powerful, sweeping strikes. Thorn barely managed to keep up, using every ounce of his agility to avoid a killing blow.

Then, Giles landed a hit.

A vicious punch struck Thorn in the ribs, sending him crashing against a pillar. He coughed, pain lancing through his side as he struggled to rise.

Giles stood over him, his shadow stretching across the floor. "You’re not walking away from this."

Ren, seeing Thorn’s dire position from the adjacent room, tried to move. Tried to reach him.

But the Kingpin was already there, cutting off his path.

"You should worry about yourself first."

Giles smirked, pressing the edge of his blade against Thorn’s throat.

Thorn grit his teeth, trying to roll away, but Giles caught him by the collar and slammed him into the ground, the floor cracking under the impact.

"You’re weaker than I expected." Giles said, pressing more weight onto Thorn’s chest. "Sending a Rank 2 after me? Disappointing."

Ren tried to rush towards Thorn, but before he could take another step, Kingpin seized his wrist in an iron grip.

"Ah, ah, ah." The masked man taunted, twisting Ren’s arm painfully behind his back. "You should pay attention to the game you’re playing."

Ren grit his teeth, his mind racing. Thorn’s breathing was ragged, and if he didn’t act fast—

His eyes widened as Giles raised his sword high, and plunged it down toward Thorn’s exposed throat.
