In that moment, Ren’s brain went into overdrive.

He had two options.

The first was to let Thorn die. He didn’t even let the option form before discarding it. Thorn cannot be allowed to die.

The second option was to use his blood bound weapons. It could result in their identity being discovered, but he was willing to take the risk.

With a grunt, he activated his blood bound bracers hidden beneath his shirt. The energy surged through his arms as Ren redirected the stored energy in it outward, breaking free of Kingpin’s hold.

The masked man stumbled backward, taken off guard by the move, his guard completely open. Ren could have used that opportunity to kill Kingpin but there was something more important to do.

Ren flicked his wrist, sending his Bloodbound coin hurtling toward Giles’ hand.

There was a loud clang as the coin struck Giles’ sword, knocking it from his grip just before the sword could plunge into Thorn’s chest.

Before anyone could register what had happened, the coin was already back in Ren’s palm, and hidden away out of sight.

Thorn seized the opening. With a grunt, he surged forward, slamming his shoulder into Giles’ gut, knocking him back into the shattered remnants of a column.

Giles stumbled back and the fight resumed, Thorn fighting with renewed energy.

The Kingpin tilted his head slightly with a chuckle, watching the both of them fight it out. "That was… interesting. What was that?"

Ren remained silent, rolling his shoulders as he re-entered his fighting stance.

"No answer?" The Kingpin chuckled. "Fine. I do enjoy a bit of mystery."

The fight resumed in full force.

Ren and Kingpin danced through the wreckage of the hallway.

Kingpin fought like this was just another Tuesday, dodging and countering with barely a thought.

Ren was fast, but the Kingpin was faster. He attacked, slashing and stabbing, but Kingpin batted it away with his bare hands.

"You fight well." Kingpin laughed out loud. "But you’re still just a child playing in the dark."

Just as Ren stabbed forward, he seized his hand, but before he could do anything, Ren attacked his wrist with his elbow, forcing Kingpin to relinquish his grip.

Ren’s eyes went wide and he quickly crossed his hand over his chest as Kingpin’s other fist appeared out of nowhere.

The blow sent him flying, and as Kingpin’s hand surged forward to grab his ankle, he kicked it away.

With a chuckle, the man followed after Ren. Just as he landed and crossed his arms in front of him again, Kingpin was there, raining down blows.

Ren gritted his teeth as he tried to weather the storm. Every impact sent tremors up his limbs, the sheer difference in power becoming more apparent with every second that passed.

Meanwhile, Thorn and Giles had both gotten their hands back on their respective weapons.

They fought each other like wild beasts, their daggers flashing in the dark.

Thorn fought with raw agility, darting around Giles like a phantom, striking at exposed joints and weak points.

Giles, however, was showing his experience. He moved with no wasted movement, his bladework a work of art. Every attack Thorn launched was met with an equally devastating counter.

"You’re holding up better than I expected." Kingpin admitted, landing a crushing elbow to Ren’s ribs. "But you’re still outmatched."

Ren staggered but recovered quickly.

Things were going very badly. Giles was Rank 3, and while Thorn was a powerful Knight for his rank, he wouldn’t be able to kill Giles without Ren.

And Ren knew the difference between Rank 3 and Rank 4. He wouldn’t win a straight fight with Kingpin.

So, he wouldn’t fight straight.

Instead, he adapted.

With each exchange, Ren adjusted his movements, dodging in such a way that Kingpin’s blows began hitting the walls and pillars around them.

Every blow chipped away at the mansion’s structure, breaking load-bearing supports, splintering beams, and weakening the foundation.

He added some attacks of his own into the fight, making it look like he was flagging and miscalculating his attacks.

The Kingpin didn’t notice. He was too focused on winning.

The ground beneath them shuddered.

Cracks slithered across the marble floors.

The walls groaned under the stress.

And still, Ren fought, leading the Kingpin toward Thorn and Giles’ battle.

The moment they reached the other fight, Ren used his bracers for a burst of motion and twisted mid-air, catching the Kingpin’s arm and hurling him toward a collapsing wall, momentarily separating them.

In that instant, Ren and Thorn turned on Giles.

Giles barely had time to react before Thorn’s dagger buried itself in his thigh. He stumbled, just as Ren’s blade found his heart.

Giles choked, eyes wide in disbelief as he staggered back, collapsing against the crumbling ruins around him.

The Kingpin stepped forward, watching as his subordinate fell lifeless to the ground. He exhaled through his mask, clasping his hands behind his back. "Impressive."

Ren and Thorn stood side by side, weapons at the ready.

The Kingpin tilted his head. "You realize, of course, that this changes nothing."

Ren’s grip on his blade tightened as he tilted his head.

"Oh, this absolutely changes nothing." The Kingpin chuckled. "If anything, this has only made things more interesting. I was already looking forward to facing you properly. Now? I get to see what the two of you are truly capable of."

Ren narrowed his eyes. He knew where this was going. And he knew what needed to be done.

He glanced at Thorn and gave a signal the man recognized immediately. Leave.

He could see the surprise enter Thorn’s body. What? He signalled back.

Kingpin watched in amusement as they communicated, content to watch what was going to happen.

Go. Now.

Thorn hesitated.

Trust me.

He knew what Thorn was feeling at that exact moment. He knew the man didn’t like what was about to happen. In fact, he hated it. But he trusted Ren. And if Ren was telling him to leave, then he had to believe there was a reason.

With one last glance at Ren, Thorn nodded and stepped away, disappearing into the shadows.

Ren and the Kingpin were alone.

The mansion groaned around them, the destruction Ren had caused reaching its breaking point. Soon, the entire structure would collapse.

The Kingpin took a slow step forward, rolling his shoulders. "Well, well. Just you and me now."

Ren exhaled, adjusting his stance.

The Kingpin tilted his head. "And what, exactly, is your plan here?"

Ren smiled. You’ll see.
