The next morning, after having breakfast, Ren and Lilith set out to explore the city, their guards keeping a healthy distance between them to give a pretence for privacy.

Even if they wanted to disobey the orders and stay closer to their charges, Lilith’s glare was enough to send anyone running for the hills.

They moved through the streets of Steadfast, rubbing shoulders with the people around them.

There were the merchants hawking their wares, the travelers with their packs and dirt stained attires, and of course, the nobles weaving through the crowds with an air of self-importance.

Here in the outer city streets, there was no divide between the people using its roads. Everyone mingled, and the city around them felt alive.

Lilith was visibly excited, her eyes darting from stall to stall, taking in everything at once. Ren found himself chuckling at her enthusiasm. "You act like you’ve never been to a market before."

"I haven’t." She admitted, her voice full of wonder. "Not like this. I’ve only seen the ones near the Underwood estate, and those were small compared to this."

"That’s still a market." He pointed out.

"It barely counts." Lilith rebutted.

Ren watched her with a smile for a moment before taking her hand and pulling her toward one of the stalls. "Then we better make the most of it."

They wandered through the marketplace, stopping at various vendors.

Ren bought her a silk ribbon for her hair, then a small handcrafted pendant shaped like a crescent moon. Lilith’s smile was so wide, Ren was sure it would jump off her face as she accepted them.

She insisted Ren tie the ribbon for her and they spent a few seconds standing there, Lilith giggling away as Ren tied the ribbon in her hair.

"How do I look?" She asked.

"Beautiful." He answered with a smile of his own. Even if she hadn’t been beautiful, he would’ve given the same answer. But he was glad that Lilith wasn’t the type of lady who obsessed over her looks.

With that, they went on their way. They moved from stall to stall, inspecting everything from jewelry to the spices, some of which had been brought from neighboring kingdoms.

At one point, Lilith paused at a bakery stand, the scent of fresh pastries catching her attention.

Ren smirked and handed the vendor a coin before Lilith could refuse. He held out a small fruit-filled pastry to her. "Try it."

Lilith took a bite, her eyes widening slightly at the taste. "This is good."

Ren chuckled. "Told you."

As they continued, a weapons shop caught Lilith’s attention.

She squealed, rushing inside. Ren was able to pick out the words ’throwing knife’ before she disappeared inside.

He chuckled, following after her. Just as he stepped in and closed the door behind him, he took a step forward and collided with someone.

A soft gasp sounded as he instinctively reached out, steadying the person before they could fall.

"Oh! I’m so sorry!" The voice was feminine, refined yet warm.

Ren looked down to find himself face to face with a noble lady his age, her striking silver-blonde hair pulled back in a neat braid. Her green eyes held genuine remorse as she dusted herself off.

She was tall for a teenage girl, dressed in practical yet elegant attire with a small rapier sheathed at her hip.

Ren waved away her apology. "It’s fine. My fault for not paying attention."

"No, I was the one not paying attention." She smiled softly. "You wouldn’t happen to be hurt, would you?"

Ren nearly snorted. "I should be asking you that question. Besides, I’m stronger than I look."

The lady studied him for a moment before her eyes widened slightly. "Wait… you wouldn’t happen to be one of the Knights competing in the King’s Tournament, would you?"

Ren tilted his head. "I am."

Her lips curved into a small, knowing smile. "I figured. Since you seem to be browsing a weapon store."

That reminded him. "Actually, I’m not here for myself." He looked around, trying to find Lilith but all he could see was shelves of weapons."

"Another competitor?" She asked. "I would’ve loved to compete myself but I’m sitting this one out."

Ren blinked, turning to look at her. Now that he was paying attention, she did look familiar. "You’re a Knight?"

"Yeah. One of the female Knights in my family." She chuckled, extending her hand. "Gwen Hart."

Ren’s mind flickered with recognition. Gwen Hart… one of the playable characters in the game.

According to her wiki, she’d been a versatile duelist, known for her strong sense of pride. It had been five years since he got here but how could he not have recognized her?!

"Ren Ross." He introduced himself. "Pleasure to meet you."

"Likewise." Gwen said, shaking his hand. "You seem capable. I’ll be interested to see how you fight."

Before Ren could respond, his danger senses tingled. He turned to find Lilith standing there, her expression blank but her eyes dangerously sharp.

Gwen noticed her as well, her smile never wavering. "And you are?"

"Lilith Underwood." Lilith answered smoothly, though the slight frost in her tone didn’t go unnoticed.

Gwen’s brows lifted slightly. "Ah. I see."

The atmosphere between them shifted slightly, polite but unmistakably tense.

"Gwen was just introducing herself." Ren attempted to interject before anything could happen, but Lilith barely acknowledged him, her gaze still locked onto Gwen’s.

"How lovely." Lilith said with a perfectly practiced smile. "Though I do wonder why you’re so interested in my fiancé."

Gwen blinked, then smirked slightly. "I was interested in him as a competitor, not as a fiancé. Unless, of course, you think I should see him as something more?"

Lilith’s smile widened ever so slightly. "You shouldn’t see him as anything at all."

There was a beat of silence before Gwen chuckled. "Noted."

Ren, feeling very much like a third party in the conversation, cleared his throat. "Lilith, we should—"

Lilith took his arm without looking away from Gwen. "Yes, we should."

With that, she turned, pulling Ren with her. He barely had time to nod politely at Gwen before being dragged out of the shop and into the bustling streets once more.

When they were a fair distance away, Ren sighed. "Lilith—"

"No." She interrupted, cutting him off before he could explain. "I already know what you’re going to say, and I don’t care."

Ren ran a hand through his hair. "You’re being ridiculous. Gwen was just making conversation."

Lilith scoffed. "She was testing me. And she was testing you too, though you were too busy being polite to notice."

Ren blinked. What?

Then he sighed. "You can’t assume every woman I talk to is interested in me."

Lilith narrowed her eyes. "Of course I can."

He exhaled. "Lilith—"

She crossed her arms, her expression serious. "You’re my fiancé, and I will not have women like her thinking they can approach you so freely. It’s my job to keep them away."

Ren stared at her before sighing in defeat. "Fine."

It wasn’t as if there was anything he could do about it anyways. Besides, this was a better outcome than what he’d expected.

At least, she hadn’t attacked Gwen outright for speaking to him.

He wasn’t sure if he’d regret bringing Lilith to the capital, but every woman who looked at him surely would.
