Chapter 234: Friends Or Not

"Are you ever going to introduce me to Serena?" Skylar asked, leaning back from his microscope with a sly grin.

Aiden sighed and ran a hand through his hair, "Nope. Not until we’re married again. I can’t risk you going all out and spilling every single one of our past escapades to her. She thinks I’m a good guy, okay? Let’s keep it that way."

Skylar raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms as he leaned against the lab bench. "Do you seriously think I’d do something to jeopardize your relationship? That hurts, Aiden. Also, good guy? Is she blind or something? If you’re a good guy then the rest of the world our saints..."

Aiden mirrored the stance, arms folding over his chest as he gave Skylar a pointed look. "I don’t really care about the other. But, you’ve already betrayed me once. Do you really think I’m dumb enough to risk it happening again?"

Skylar’s face twisted in mock indignation. "When, exactly, did I ever betray you?"

Aiden raised a hand, ticking off a point with a finger. "Oh, let me think. Maybe the time your pillow talk resulted in Sam finding out where Serena was? Ring any bells? You basically handed her the roadmap to my life. Sam went ahead and spilled the beans on all sorts of things that girls did in the past to get my attention!"

Skylar’s grin widened, and he tilted his head like he was enjoying the memory. "You’re just mad because, according to Sam, that little incident pushed Serena to decide she’s going to propose to you instead of refusing you all the time until the time was right. You should be thanking me. Thanks to my lust for my wife, you will have a story to tell your grandchildren."

Aiden scowled, throwing his hands up in the air. "Yes, and now I’m stuck waiting for God knows how long until Serena actually pops the question! Do you have any idea how agonizing it is to sit there, day after day, knowing what’s coming but not knowing when? It’s torture! As for my grandchildren, sure- I’ll beging the story with one night your granduncle was feeling horny..."

Skylar laughed loudly at that, clearly unbothered by Aiden’s frustration. "Torture, huh? Poor you. The love of your life is planning to propose, and it’s just so hard being adored like that. My heart bleeds for you. Also, don’t forget to mention your much cooler grand uncle..." freewēbnoveℓ.com

Aiden narrowed his eyes, pointing a finger at him. "You know what? This—this right here—is why I’m not introducing you to her. You’d say something just to stir the pot, and I can’t have you messing with this."

Skylar raised his hands in surrender, signaling his retreat from the conversation. His quota of talking for the day was almost met, and he was more than ready to dive back into his work. He adjusted the microscope in front of him, his fingers deftly twisting knobs as he prepared to refocus on his research. But just as he leaned forward, he paused, glancing back over his shoulder with a casual remark.

"Oh, by the way, the medicine I’ve been working on is almost ready. A few more tests, and you’ll be able to patent it soon." He gave a satisfied nod, clearly proud of his progress. Then, as if it were a mere afterthought, he added, "Also, Sam got bored at home, so she decided to pay your Serena a visit."

Aiden froze, the groan that escaped him laden with equal parts frustration and resignation. "You let Samantha near Serena? Unsupervised? Again? God help me. Do you have any idea what those two could get up to together?"

Skylar smirked, clearly enjoying Aiden’s plight as he adjusted a few slides on the microscope. "Hey, strong women attract strong personalities. You signed up for this when you fell for her. Don’t blame me for pointing out your questionable life choices."

Aiden ignored the jab, muttering under his breath, "I’m going to my office. I’ll bury my head in work and try to mentally prepare for whatever madness is about to come my way. God knows I’ll need all the strength I can muster. And you! If I have more problems, I am definitely going to catch you. Let’s see how your microscope saves you then."

Skylar glanced up briefly, watching Aiden pace toward the door. But something about Aiden’s words triggered a memory, a small flicker of something Sam had casually mentioned. He frowned, the thought niggling at the back of his mind, just out of reach. He tilted his head, trying to piece it together, and then it hit him like a freight train.

And he immediately spoke up, "Sam mentioned something else. She said she brought up your relationship to Kimberlee. Kim didn’t take the news very well. Sam seemed pretty confident that Kim’s reaction wasn’t... positive. You might want to tread carefully there, in case she tries to get in touch. And, honestly, you don’t know this because you refuse to talk about her, but Kim has been holding onto things for far too long. Sam once told me Kim kept your old photos and notes. That doesn’t scream ’I’m over him.’ If she’s upset now, she might act out, and knowing Kim, that never ends well."

Skylar waited for the inevitable groan or complain about bringing up the past but instead was met with silence. He looked up from his apparatus again, only to find the lab empty. Huh? He’d left? Without creating a ruckus about Sam telling Kimberlee about his relationship? Skylar shrugged and returned to his work. Aiden could be a bas*ard at times. If he was not worried about Kimberlee, then so be it. He’d be able to handle it well.

However, Skylar failed to realize that his friend had already walked out even before hearing the words of warning about Kimberlee. Because as far as Skylar was concerned, he’d done his duty as his friend by giving a timely warning to Aiden.
