I Became the Villainess, But My Beast Husbands Can Hear My Mind?!-Chapter 128: Climbing Into the Snowy Domain (1)
Roxanna wanted to argue, but after thinking for a moment, she realized that Luan was completely right. She had no experience climbing slippery cliffs. If she insisted on staying in her human form, she would only become a burden to both of them.
"Alright. I’ll turn into a fox," she said at last.
Without wasting any time, they packed up their things. As soon as Roxanna changed into a small fox, they immediately began to climb.
She lay on top of the bag, her little body carefully tied to Luan’s chest with her clothes so she wouldn’t slip and fall.
[Damn... it’s really high,] Roxanna thought as she accidentally glanced down. Thick mist covered the mountain, and she could barely see the ground. [We’d be in serious trouble if we fell.]
She could heal herself and her husbands, but that didn’t mean the pain would disappear. It would still hurt terribly. That was why she kept praying in her heart that none of them would slip.
Luckily, Cyrus and Luan were very skilled climbers. They moved quickly and steadily, even much faster than when Roxanna had climbed in her human form.
It seemed she really had been holding them back when she insisted on climbing in her human form.
[From now on, I should listen to them more,] she thought in her mind.
"Hey, Luan, look to your left," Cyrus said, suddenly stopping.
Luan stopped as well, and both of them turned their heads.
"It looks like there’s a path over there," Cyrus continued. "The slope isn’t too steep. Do you think we can move sideways?"
Compared to the steep cliff they were climbing now, the path on the right side was easier to step on. They could walk upward along it, though they still had to be very careful.
Luan paused and took a deep breath. Climbing without resting was truly exhausting, even for a beastman like him.
"I think so," Luan said. "We just need to move carefully. And I think we’re getting closer to the snowy area."
Cyrus looked up at the path ahead, then nodded. "Yeah. The air already feels colder," he said as he rubbed his arms lightly.
Roxanna lifted her head as well. Only then did she notice that her breath was slowly turning into white mist. Since she couldn’t speak in her fox form, she rubbed her head against Luan’s cheek, as if asking him for some warmth.
"Don’t worry." Luan reached out and placed one hand on her head. "As long as we stay close together, the cold won’t be able to kill us."
Roxanna let out a small, soft sound and pressed closer to him, clearly comforted by his words. Her fluffy tail swayed lightly behind her, showing that she felt a little more at ease now.
Cyrus glanced back at them and smiled faintly. "You two are really sticking together," he teased. "Careful, or I’ll start feeling left out."
Luan snorted. "Then walk closer," replied calmly. "No one’s stopping you."
Cyrus let out a small laugh because his really wasn’t the time to flirt or joke around. The two of them moved slowly and carefully toward the gentler path. When they finally stepped onto it, they were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.
Now that the path was easier to walk on, Roxanna quickly turned back into her human form. After all, the cold was getting harsher, and talking with each other helped take their minds off it.
"Yeah, just like I thought. We’re almost in the snowy area now," Luan said. He pointed forward with his chin while gently helping Roxanna put on her clothes and thick jacket.
"I heard the snow on Golden Mountain can freeze your feet," Cyrus said. "But thankfully, we have something to protect our feet."
Luckily, the system had given them snow boots, so their feet stayed warm even while walking on the snow. But Roxanna soon realized that the snow was much thicker than she had expected. Every time they took a step, their feet sank several centimeters into it.
"I bet a lot of people couldn’t make it through this snowy area," Luan said. He clicked his tongue each time the snow swallowed his feet, and sometimes he even muttered a few bad words.
"Yeah, you’re probably right," Cyrus replied.
Roxanna suddenly stopped walking. Her eyes widened when she saw what was ahead. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
In front of them lay many frozen bodies, scattered across the snow. None of them were wearing any clothes. Their arms were wrapped around themselves, as if they had tried to hold onto the last bit of warmth before dying.
Their legs were stuck deep in the snow. It was likely that their feet had frozen so badly that they could no longer move.
"Why are they naked like that?" Luan asked softly, clearly confused. "Shouldn’t people wear more clothes when it’s cold?"
"That’s a natural reaction of the body," Roxanna explained softly. "When someone is freezing to death, their body can get confused. They suddenly feel very hot, even though they’re not. So they start taking off their clothes without realizing it."
Luan frowned. "That... sounds horrible."
"It is," Cyrus said softly. His eyes swept over the frozen bodies, and his expression grew serious. "They must have been desperate."
During winter, most beastkins would hide in warm places, such as underground burrows or caves. Because of that, Luan and Cyrus had never been in a situation where they truly couldn’t find a source of warmth.
More than that, the temperature on this mountain was extremely cold. Their bodies even struggled to regulate their internal heat.
Roxanna hugged her jacket tighter around herself. Seeing this scene made her chest feel heavy. "They probably tried their best to survive," she murmured. "But the cold was stronger."
Luan exhaled slowly, his breath turning into white mist in the air. "This place is really no joke." Luan clicked his tongue once again. "Even for us, it’s hard to endure."
Cyrus took Roxanna’s hand and held it tightly. "We’d better stick together."
