I Can Contract Beauties-Chapter 38: The Intuition
The experience points he gained this time were a lot less compared to when he killed the Old Fire Yak.
Not only was it because the Old Fire Yak was two levels higher than him, this time, the experience points have also been shared by three parties, him, the beast and then the grimoire.
As expected, if a beast was present, they would receive the most experience points. The summoner would receive a portion, while the grimoire would receive the least amount of experience points between the three.
According to Marcel, this was because the beasts has higher experience cap compared to the summoners and grimoire, and because they were the ones who usually fight the opponent, hence the reason why they received most of the experience points gained during a battle.
Due to the high experience cap, beasts would often level up slowly. Of course, if they were lucky and performed very well, they could also receive a direct upgrade from the World’s Will.
[Due to its Perfect Performance, your Contracted Beast, Volcanic Tortoise has been rewarded with Rank Level +1l ]
This was yet another surprise for Miguel. The last time, he received an upgrade of his skill, [Shadow Steps] when he performed a Perfect Performance against the Level 3 Old Fire Yak. Miguel did not know if performing a Perfect Performance guarantees an extra reward like this or if he was just lucky. But he was happy to receive them nonetheless.
Leveling a Beast was pretty hard and strenuous. They require a lot of resources including the experience points that they can receive after a battle. Being able to receive a direct level upgrade was a very good reward.
A Level 2 Bronze Grade Volcanic Tortoise was very powerful. It was at least two times stronger compared to when it was still at Level 1.
The higher the grade of a beast, the higher the difference of power between their levels. If a Level 1 Bronze Grade Beasts has more or less the same strength as a Level 2 Normal Grade Beasts, then a Level 2 Bronze Grade Beast was already equivalent to a peak Level 3 Normal Grade Beast, some might even be able to defeat a Level 4 Normal Grade Beast depending on their skills and battle experiences.
Normal Beasts were the most common. Bronze Grade were rare, Silver Grade were considered as Elite Beast, while Gold Grade Beasts were also termed as King Beasts.
The Level of the beasts was completely independent of their Grades. Marcel stated that a Level 1 Normal Grade Beast, has the same experience cap as that of a Level 1 Bronze Grade, Level 1 Silver Grade and so on.
And although it may look like higher grade beast has overwhelming advantage if they only target lower grade beasts with higher levels to gain more experience points, however, that wasn’t actually the case.
Just like how Aaliyah did not receive any experience points when she killed Jonas’ who was a few times lower in grade than her, other beasts of higher grade but low in level won’t also receive anything if they targeted those beasts with a high level but low grade.
Of course, as beasts of higher grade would give more experience points, this would also mean that beasts in higher grades can easily gain experience points if they defeat opponents of the same grade or even higher.
Miguel did not know the exact rule about this but the World’s Will must be based on the strength difference between the attacker and the target.
Miguel shook his head as he thought that this must be the World’s Will’s way of protecting the weak.
Anyways, as he walked home, Miguel also began to examine the necklace that he won from Gasper.
Its lace was a simple black string made from ordinary material. Its pendant was that of a dirty red orb enclosed within a circle that was made of an unknown metal. There were two of this metal, and they looked like they were trapping the red orb from within.
Contrary to Marcel and Erika’s suspicions, Miguel actually did not change the bet because he felt pity for Gasper. He could rot right there and then and Miguel would still not pity him.
He actually has a good reason for choosing this necklace over the graded armor.
When Gasper proposed that he would wager his graded armor before, Miguel took a quick glance at him and noticed that the armor was not on him. During that quick glance, this necklace immediately caught his attention.
At that time, his intuition, or maybe, his Innate Skill, immediately alerted him that this necklace was not something ordinary.
As for offering the two graded weapons, of course, Miguel just wanted to have Gasper’s hope up. He knew that Gasper was definitely aiming for the graded weapon when he proposed the duel, and he can guess who ordered Gasper to do it.
He could have gone for the graded armor along with the necklace as well but Miguel discarded this idea after some thought.
If he managed to win over the graded armor, Carlota and Gasper would surely not take it lying down. Due to Marcel, he could not kill them yet, so if they were to take action, he would not be able to retaliate appropriately.
Once he was gone, he was also afraid that Carlota would target Sara due to the incident. Marcel would always not be there to protect her at all times after all.
Miguel weighed it in his heart and judged that killing either Carlota or Gasper right now would only worsen his relationship with Marcel. At this moment, he still needed Marcel to offer some good words to the main branch so that they could provide him with resources for him to grow stronger quickly.
Although he was not afraid of going rogue, it would not be the best course of action as he still did not know a lot of things about this world. The Red Family, who was quite influential and had a lot of resources, was just the perfect place for him. So for now, he decided not to fall out with Marcel and the Red Family. He would also not make a move to Gasper and Carlota carelessly as he would surely become Marcel’s first suspect.
On the other hand, Marcel also doesn’t want to have trouble with Miguel as he wanted Miguel to become part of the Red Family.
Each of them has their own motives and schemes, and none of them was against it.
Miguel observed the necklace carefully for a few more minutes but he still could not identify what was so special about it that his Innate Skill or intuition warned him about it. Aside from its intricate design and appearance, there was nothing special about it at all in Miguel’s eyes.
However, the Innate Skill would not warn him about this necklace without any basis.
Knowing that this was a mystery that he could not solve for now, Miguel kept it aside for the time being. He wore it on his neck and hid it underneath his clothes so that he won’t misplace it.
He kept on walking steadily as he arrived at the servant quarters a few minutes later.
Arriving at his room, Miguel did not waste any more time as he began to study the first edition of the book provided by Erika.
