I Maxed Out My Luck Stat-Chapter 12: Misunderstanding (Part 1)
"So that’s what happened..."
Seated on a throne was a figure of unmatched power, at least in the City of Darkness.
Within this glorious domain of his Noble Household, the Obsidian Palace was where he and his esteemed family dwelled. And this throne-room, a realm of opulence and remarkable magnificence, was a place where his will was absolute.
He had very long hair, almost like that of a woman, and it flowed across his back until it nearly touched his waist.
His eyes were dark purple, containing deep and ancient wisdom within them.
With a pale face that oozed extreme beauty and a countenance that displaced concern, the Head of the Noir Household sat in deep contemplation.
Before him was Emily, the attendant he placed in charge of his youngest daughter.
She had come to give her report on the matter.
At first, this man—Maximus Aurelius Von Noir—was furious when he heard of the state his daughter was in upon returning from the Blanc Household. He was burning with deep hatred and almost stormed the City of Brilliance to avenge his youngest daughter.
Well... not exactly.
However, that was what he would have used as justification.
In all honesty, he knew the Blanc Household wouldn’t be foolish enough to attack his daughter, and that the troublesome girl must have done something to warrant it.
But so what?
He would have the perfect excuse to take down the Blanc Household, or at least chip away at their power, if he used this as an opportunity.
Of course, he wasn’t a stupid person who would blindly give in to his ambitions.
Rather than act so spontaneously, he needed the facts first. Only then could he warp it to suit his own narrative. By understanding what had happened, he would be better able to deny his daughter’s guilt and elevate his own standing.
That... had been the plan.
But—
"He really beat her so easily..."
—What was this absurd thing that Maximus was hearing?
His own daughter, whom even he feared, was actually dealt with so easily by a brat who was meant to be hopelessly untalented? And he did so with only a Low Rank Principal Disposition?!
Impossible!
That could not be the case!
"Are you sure it was a Low Rank Principal Disposition?" He asked Emily as he tried his best to maintain the calm image he had always presented to his subjects.
"I... am not sure..." Emily mumbled, trembling under his fierce gaze. "It appeared like [Basic Summoning], and the projectiles that entered the Young Lady vanished rather quickly, but... I truly could not recognize the weapon he used."
"Then it could not have been [Basic Summoning]." Maximus quickly retorted.
Many people didn’t know this, but abilities gotten from Principal Dispositions were closely linked to an invisible system of the world referred to as the Akashic Records.
It was a dominant force that regulated everything.
It shaped laws and created concepts.
It also had the records of all the Principal Disposition Holders and maintained the balance.
"[Basic Summoning] has been fully explored through our study of the Akashic Records. It summons common objects that have no Mystical Characteristic. The object cannot be too large, and it disappears after a brief while. In essence... it is trash."
"I-I know..."
"Then do you know what is referred to as ’common’?" Maximus asked her, his gaze tightening.
"Um... what is available in large quantities?"
"No..." Maximus shook his head. "If that were the case, then those who use [Basic Summoning] would be able to create money with their abilities. But they cannot create items of value that way."
Indeed!
Money, or any kind of special item used in transactions, was considered ’special’ by the Akashic Records and could not be summoned by [Basic Summoning]. Since this overarching system regulated all things in this world, it knew the value of every item and had to keep the balance somehow.
As such, expensive items or means of exchange—like money—could not be summoned, even if there were many coins in circulation.
"That means any item summoned through [Basic Summoning] has to be something we all accept to be ’normal’ or ’commonplace’ to be summoned. It can’t have too high a value, else it would not be summoned. The Akashic Record analyzes these things in an instant once the summoning call is made and processes the delivery."
All Principal Dispositions were essentially calls to the Akashic Records.
Without exception!
They were all tied to this divine overseer!
So...
"... That power cannot be [Basic Summoning]. It is something else, but he must have wanted to trick you into thinking that it was."
Emily was in awe as she thought back to the scene.
It didn’t seem like Richard was being particularly sneaky with his intentions, or that he was one who would make such a bold scheme.
In fact, frankly speaking, her first impression of him was that he looked like an idiot.
Someone lacking any ounce of charm or luck.
A truly miserable creature.
To think someone like that would be capable of such deep schemes...
"I’m not saying it was his idea." Maximus must have sensed her train of thought, so he quickly spoke up to correct her.
"A-ah, I see..."
Emily heaved a sigh of relief.
Even if she had underestimated the brat, there was no way she could make a mistake regarding his actual nature. He was an uncontrollable and cruel man, almost like the Young Lady.
In a sense, the two suited each other.
"The boy is only ten. He wouldn’t have thought to deceive us like this. His family, on the other hand... hmm, it appears I underestimated you yet again, Karl. My old rival, you almost had me fooled..." Maximus began to chuckle loudly.
"M-My Lord..." Emily’s voice shook, and her breath nearly caught at the sight.
The malevolent laughter continued for some time.
Until finally... it stopped.
"I see... I understand it now." Maximus spoke with clear certainty. "The Blanc Household is trying to fool us, no, the entire Vampire State. They’ve hidden it so well that I am so astounded. Truly impressive... I have to admit."
"They... Really?!"
Emily was in shock.
She didn’t understand what her Lord and Master meant by his words.
Thankfully, he was merciful enough to explain.
"All Households have spies in them belonging to the other families. This is how we get information from our enemies and allies. It’s also why I have limited that foolish daughter of mine from using her Principal Disposition, even in the manor..." Maximus began to speak, and Emily listened while nodding at every interval.
"However, if exploited well, those spies can be used to give inaccurate information. They could be used to trick the Households who are watching." He sighed, his smile broadening. "That is what the Blanc Household has done. They made all of us believe that their only son is hopeless, and that they are desperately trying to have another child without any luck."
"Ahh..." The attendant’s eyes broadened at this point.
"I should have found something suspicious about this narrative much sooner. It was simply too unrealistic. After all, how unfortunate would a Noble Family have to be to experience something like that? It is simply unbelievable."
Emily nodded in agreement.
"Now, I know the truth! That child of theirs is likely a prodigy!"
