Incubus Ascension-Chapter 25
’I could see the worried and fearful expressions on both Rem’s mother and her big sister.’
Their faces were tight, eyes darting around like they expected the worst any second.
Liam’s chest felt heavy just looking at them. These people had already lost so much, and now this ATLAS group was coming.
He thought he should at least give them some weapons so they could protect themselves if things went wrong.
No way was he letting them sit there helpless.
"Hey," Liam said, keeping his voice as calm as he could,
"is there some kind of weapons storage in town or something? Anything nearby we could use?"
Rem’s mother held her chin for a moment, thinking hard. Then she nodded slowly.
"If I remember correctly, my neighbor just right below us was a gang member. He has a lot of weapons."
Liam nodded back. "Good enough for me. Let’s go check it out." They all headed down the stairs together, feet echoing in the empty hall.
Liam pushed open the neighbor’s door and stepped inside first, heart beating a little faster than he wanted to admit.
He went straight to the bedroom and started rummaging through drawers and under the bed, but he came up empty.
Nothing. Meanwhile, Olivia was in the kitchen, and suddenly she yelled, "Everyone, come here and see this!"
They all rushed over. Liam’s eyes widened when he stepped into the kitchen.
Guns of all kinds were scattered everywhere, machine guns, pistols, grenades.
All just dumped all over the counters and floor like someone had emptied a whole arsenal in there.
Rem’s face lit up right away. She grabbed a Thompson submachine gun off the floor, lifted it with both hands, and grinned at him. "Look, big brother, to this toy!"
Liam’s heart jumped into his throat. For a split second he pictured the little girl accidentally pulling the trigger and turning it on him.
He snatched it out of her hands fast, trying not to look panicked.
He crouched down to her level and said gently, "Beautiful girls have princess toys, I think. Rem looks way better with a beautiful dress anyway."
Rem blinked at him, then said, "Is that so?" She nodded like she was considering it.
Liam let out a long sigh of relief. That was way too close. He turned to Rem’s mother and Olivia.
"We need to take these weapons upstairs and get ready. And we need to lock the entrance to the apartment building tight."
They all nodded without arguing.
Liam looked at Olivia. "Olivia, take Rem with you and start carrying the weapons up to your place."
Then he turned to Rem’s mother and her big sister.
"You two grab planks, furniture, anything heavy you can find and block off the entrance.
Use it to barricade the whole building."
He added, "If you need anything at all, just come find me on the roof."
Liam watched them split up and get to work. Once they were moving, he crouched down, picked up a full box of grenades.
Then he hauled it upstairs to the roof himself. The weight made his arms burn, but he didn’t stop.
After Rem’s mother and sister finished blocking the entrance, Liam called down to them,
"Go to your house window and bring any guns you want with you."
Then he gathered all four of them and said, "Once you see the armed group from ATLAS coming, open fire. I’ll let you know on this walkie-talkie when it’s time."
They nodded and each took one of the spare devices from him.
Liam headed back up to the roof and scanned the distance, eyes straining. Nothing yet. He kept waiting, nerves buzzing under his skin.
Finally he spotted armed vehicles rolling in from far off.
He grabbed the walkie-talkie and told the girls down below, "They’re here, get ready."
The vehicles rolled right up and stopped in front of the building.
The second the doors opened and the men started piling out, all the girls opened fire.
Wheels blew out, windows shattered, and a good chunk of the armed men dropped right there on the street.
Their leader cursed loud enough for everyone to hear. "Fucking shit, we walked into a trap!"
He looked up and saw them still shooting.
Liam started chucking grenades at the cars, one after another. They exploded in bright bursts, shaking the whole block.
They kept pouring it on until most of them were down. Only the leader was still standing, barely alive even after all that fire.
Liam wondered how any human could take that kind of barrage and keep going.
He quickly checked his level, it said 21. Liam’s own level was only 7.
His heart started hammering. He needed to figure out how to finish him off, and fast.
The leader cursed even louder so they could all hear it.
He reached into one of the car trunks, pulled out an RPG, and pointed it straight at the window where the girls were.
Liam’s heart slammed against his ribs. He had to kill him before he fired that thing, or they were all dead! 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
He forced himself to think. Think fast or they would all die.
Then he saw the box with the last hundred grenades or so. An idea hit him.
He used his glue balls skill and stuck every single grenade together into one giant clump.
Then he activated his second skill, fire surface, and hurled the whole massive thing at the leader.
The leader smirked when everything went quiet for a second. "Did you finally lose hope?" he yelled up at them.
He lifted the RPG and aimed it right at the second-floor window.
At the exact same time Liam threw the violet glue-ball bomb and prayed under his breath, Please hit him, please.
It smacked straight into his face.
Boom.
The explosion was huge, bigger than anything he’d ever seen.
It shoved the cars back across the street and left a massive crater in the ground.
A notification flashed in front of him: 5000 exp. His level jumped from 7 to 13.
Liam couldn’t help smiling. He raced down from the roof, legs pumping with excitement, and met the girls.
They all celebrated right there, they actually did it. They took them down.
Later that evening Rem’s mother cooked a hearty meal for all of them.
They sat around the table and ate together, the food warm and filling after everything.
When it was time to sleep, Liam went to his room, dropped onto the bed, and let out a long breath.
He barely had time to close his eyes before he heard a knock on the door.
He got up, walked over, and opened the door.
Olivia stood there.
She was hesitating, her fingers shaking like she was fighting to keep a secret in.
She looked ready to say something very important.
