The Mafia's Undoing-Chapter 203: The Affair That Wasn’t
By morning, the news was published in the New York Times on the front page of the business section.
Marvin Ventures CEO’s Complicated Partnership: Business or Pleasure?
Tony Marvin and Beverly Stone’s close relationship raises eyebrows and questions about mixing business with romance.
The photos displayed were taken in multiple professional shots of Beverly and me at dinners, business meetings, looking intimate, close, and romantic.
The quotes in the article were from anonymous sources close to the situation.
They’re inseparable. Business meetings last for hours. Late dinners. Constant contact.
Old flames rekindling. High school sweethearts reuniting after years. Katherine seems sidelined. Those were the descriptions that the press seemed to capture the scandal.
I read the article with shock and disbelief and was in rage at the falsification of it all.
"This is LIES and complete fabrication! We’re business acquaintances. Nothing more!"
I called Larry immediately. "Sue them for defamation and slander! This is completely FALSE!"
Larry was cautious. "Truth is the defense against defamation. Can you prove nothing inappropriate occurred?"
"OF COURSE! We discussed business in hotels! Investments. All of which were completely professional!"
"But the photos show apparent intimacy at dinners and late-night meetings. Perception is the real problem here."
I called Katherine, feeling desperate and panicking at the thought of her reading the lies.
"It’s not true.. none of it! I swear to you!"
"I know." Her voice was flat and emotionless.
"You believe me?" I asked warily.
"Yes, but not everyone else. Our friends, family, and the public believe the article. They think you’re having an affair."
"But YOU know the truth, that’s what matters to me the most."
"Is it? I’m publicly humiliated, Tony. People are pitying me and saying all sorts of things like ’Poor Katherine, husband’s cheating. She’s so pathetically naive.’"
"I’m NOT cheating and never will! Beverly is BUSINESS!"
Bella called and was furious.
"How could you? Katherine’s devastated, and your kids are asking questions!"
"I didn’t DO anything! The article is a lie!"
"But appearances do matter, and the photos don’t lie! You both look guilty."
Susan called, feeling deeply disappointed. "Fix this immediately. Now, before you lose her forever."
Elliot called, speaking in his clinical psychologist voice. "Statistically, marriages don’t survive public affair allegations. Even the false ones, because the trust is fundamentally destroyed."
Beverly called, apparently concerned, but sounded like fake sympathy.
"Tony, I’m so sorry. I had no idea the press was watching, photographing us, and creating this narrative."
"This is a complete disaster. My marriage is-"
"I know, and it’s partially my fault. I shouldn’t have been so... friendly or too comfortable. I must have given the wrong impression."
"You didn’t do anything wrong. We had business meetings, which were professional. There was nothing inappropriate."
"But Katherine’s hurt, and I completely understand. If I were her, I’d be suspicious too. Maybe we should stop working together. At least, for your marriage’s sake."
"But the Miami deal-"
"It can wait, but your marriage can’t. Tony, Katherine’s special... don’t lose her over a business partnership. It’s not worth it."
I hung up, feeling even more confused. Beverly seemed... genuine, concerned, and self-aware?
I reviewed the article carefully, my strategic mind thinking. The photos, quotes, and timeline were all done analytically.
Who took the photos? They were of professional quality. Was it the paparazzi or was it deliberately staged?
The quotes from anonymous sources were from whom exactly? Were they Beverly’s friends or her PR team?
The timeline article was published right when Katherine was most vulnerable and suspicious.
The pattern was emerging in Beverly’s escalation: her social media posts, the accidental touches, and her constant contact requests.
"She... she DID this. She orchestrated everything, manipulated me completely, and used me." I roared.
Fuck! Katherine was RIGHT, and I dismissed her concerns. I gaslighted her, telling her she was paranoid.
I was at the office when Beverly arrived for the scheduled meeting, which I organized... and it would be the last one ever.
"Tony! We need to discuss damage control strategies-"
"Hold it, Beverly. We need to discuss YOUR manipulation and YOUR orchestration of this entire situation."
"What? I don’t understand-"
"Don’t play smart with me. The photos, the quotes, and the timing. YOU planted this story and deliberately destroyed my marriage."
Beverly’s mask slipped for a brief moment, then quickly recovered. "That’s absurd. Why would I-"
"Because you want me and always have. You saw my success, decided to pursue me, and used business as cover."
"Tony, you’re being paranoid-"
"No, Katherine was right. She warned me repeatedly, but I didn’t listen, and now I see it clearly."
She paused, then changed completely, her mask dropping entirely.
"Ok, fine. Yes, I wanted you back. Who wouldn’t? You’re successful and powerful now, everything I knew you’d become."
"We dated for just three months when we were 25! That was over a DECADE ago!"
"But you were mine first in high school before Katherine. Before your marriage and before everything, you were MINE first."
"I was never yours. We were kids in high school, and later had a brief fling that was nothing serious. It wasn’t real."
"It was real to ME before you ended things and left! Then you met HER and changed completely, becoming soft and weak."
"Loving Katherine doesn’t make me weak. It makes me better and stronger."
"Better? You’ve been attacked several times by enemies trying to destroy you! The old Tony would never allow that!"
"The old Tony was a criminal, just like my father. Katherine saved me from that and redeemed me completely."
Beverly’s final manipulation was deceptive. "But you’ve been building an empire and working late nights to become powerful again. You chose power over her. You’ve already chosen, you won’t admit it."
I pause, the bitter truth hitting hard.
"I’ve been wrong. Building an empire won’t protect my family, but love will; that’s what protects family. My presence protects my family, and Katherine protects me."
"So you’re choosing her over success and power? Everything you’ve built?"
"I’m choosing her over YOU, and that is over business partnerships that compromise my marriage. Over an empire that would cost me my family."
"You’ll regret this. Opportunities like mine don’t come twice."
"I regret only one thing, and that was not listening to Katherine and not seeing your manipulation sooner. We’re done, professionally, personally, and forever."
I drove to Bella’s, desperate to find my wife. What if it were too late and the damage irreparable?
I arrived to find Katherine outside watching the kids play. She saw me, and her face closed off protectively.
"Katherine, please. Let me explain and fix this."
"There’s nothing to explain. I read the article, and I believe you. I do, but our trust is broken."
"I know it’s my fault. I was too stubborn and didn’t listen. I dismissed, and now I know I was wrong."
"Yes. You were."
"I ended the partnership. There is no more Beverly. No more late meetings. No more distance between us."
"I got lost in ambition and fear. In the need to protect through power, but I forgot that real protection is presence. Being here.. being a husband and a father."
"You missed Thomas’s birthday for her and your business. You chose wrong."
"I know, and I’ll regret it forever, but I’m choosing right now... AND I’m choosing you. It’s always you and only you."
"Words are easy. I need your actions prove the truth."
"Then watch my actions to rebuild our trust. However long it takes, I’m fighting for us. For this marriage and for our family." I promised her.
Katherine cried from the hurt, but I was hopeful that she had forgiven me.
That night at Bella’s house, the kids were asleep, and it was just Katherine and me really talking.
Through the hours with complete honesty, pain, regret, hope, love, and commitment.
We made love through the night, it was different than before. This time, it wasn’t desperate or possessive, just us genuinely reconnecting with each other.
It was slow, gentle, apologetic, and we were healing together.
"I love you," I whispered to her.
"Don’t ever hurt me, please. I can’t survive this again."
"Never, I promise. You’re my priority. My first, last, and always."
We held each other as our healing began.
The next morning, we made plans to go home to rebuild our family together.
We saw Beverly’s press conference on live TV as breaking news.
"I need to address the false allegations about Tony Marvin and me. The truth is-"
Katherine and I watched, looking horrified at what she was saying.
"Tony Marvin pursued ME aggressively despite his being married. I resisted and maintained professionalism, but he persisted relentlessly. I have the evidence via texts, emails, and voicemails that proves his pursuit. His obsession and his affair attempt."
She showed "evidence" on screen, which I knew was fabricated and forged, but looked convincing to the crowd.
"I’m coming forward because Katherine Marvin deserves the truth. Her husband pursued an affair, and I said no, but he wouldn’t stop. This is harassment and betrayal. This is the truth."
She had destroyed me publicly and made me the villain to make herself the victim.
This was her manipulation and ultimate revenge.
For my rejection, for choosing Katherine over her, and for ending the partnership.
And Katherine was watching, seeing the evidence, I couldn’t tell if she doubted or believed.
Was the trust we just rebuilt shattered again?
This was Beverly’s final blow.
Can our marriage survive this, and can our trust withstand fabricated evidence? 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
The fight continues. But now it’s public, viral, and devastating.
