Chapter 407: The Dissonant’s True Target

"You had a kid!? Really!??" Lilia’s eyes shone like stars as she leaned over the table, getting all up in her friend’s face. "You have to tell me everything! What happened!? And where is this child of yours now—"

She stopped rambling the moment Mikaela pointed at the gorgeous young woman helplessly sitting at the right side of the table.

It only took an instant for Lilia to realize what her friend was telling her. This realization urged her eyes wide open as she accidentally slammed the table in her excitement.

"Eek!" Sylvy exclaimed, not used to her mother being so high-strung.

"Oh, oops, sorry my dear," Lilia apologized while doing her best to calm her emotions. But every time she looked Memphis’s way, her eyes couldn’t stop sparkling.

"You had your secret daughter, so who’s to say I couldn’t have my own?" Mikaela snorted confidently, pride for her valiant daughter overflowing. "We already know who the father of yours is, but as for mine... Tsk!"

"???"

"What’s the matter, Miky?" Lilia asked, tilting her head. "You never did have any interest in romance, but I assume the one who stole your heart is quite the man, no? Why the curling of your lips?"

"Stole my heart!? Bullshit!" Mikaela cursed, her mood ruined. "That fucker took advantage of me and then trapped me for years! That damn Lucifer is an even bigger bastard than Adam, and I’ll surely have his head pierced through by my holy pike one day!"

"!?!?"

"Lucifer!?" Lilia’s mouth opened wide, but she then covered it with a hand, muttering, "How naughty..."

For an Archangel and a Fallen Angel turned Great Demon King to conceive a child—that was the epitome of scandalous!

"You... really haven’t changed..." Mikaela sighed in exasperation, shaking her head. "But regardless of my tragic follies, why don’t we get back to you? The Ancestors of this place have always been sticklers in their rules, and there’s no way they would have forgiven you so easily. That’s without even considering that jealous sister of yours."

"No... You’re right," Lilia murmured, her tone troubled. "Neither the Ancestors nor my little sister would ever consider pardoning me for what I’ve done. But for this important Event, they’ve permitted me temporary freedom. That’s why I thought of coming to see you."

"If it were anyone else, they’d think you were wanting to use me to help you attain permanent freedom," Mikaela joked. "But we both know that I have no such power. Even if I were to unleash the full extent of my Bloodline, it’s almost impossible that I could defeat even a single Yggdrasil Ancestor."

Lilia sighed alongside her friend.

The Ancestors of Yggdrasil were monsters as old as time itself, and not only were they unbelievably powerful, they were also nigh-immortal. With the connections they had with the Tree Spirit of Yggdrasil and the Tree itself, they could regenerate eternally.

The World Tree Yggdrasil was what connected the Seven different Ascension Tower Dimensions together. It was also where the lifeforce of any deceased would travel to after their deaths. And after countless years of accumulation, the World Tree had become an inextinguishable source of life energy, achieving a state of near-omnipotence.

Even the Realms discovered only by Cassius because of the System—like the Land of Beginnings, the Nightmarescape, and the Underworld—were unlikely to rival the Holy Sanctuary of Yggdrasil.

Too overpowered!

And as the ones who maintained order in the Holy Sanctuary, the Tree Spirit and her sanctioned Ancestors were all comfortably sitting at the absolute pinnacle of the Ascension Tower’s power hierarchy. It was unknown if even God himself could defeat a single Ancestor.

"If only those old bastards hadn’t destroyed the Bridge to Ascension all those eons ago," Mikaela lamented. "If they hadn’t, we’d be able to reach for something higher than the Godlike Rank and possibly even see where those bug monster Dissonants came from."

Memphis stiffened at the mention of the Dissonants, recalling how they attempted to take her body and life.

Sylvy, on the other hand, curiously looked between all three adult women, not quite understanding what they were talking about. Her mother, however, was stuck on the topic of ascendance beyond the Godlike Rank.

It was something her husband would often ball his knuckles up while cursing the Yggdrasil Ancestors...

"Do you actually believe the myths of there being something above the Godlike Rank...?" Lilia asked seriously.

Archangel Mikaela wanted to confidently answer yes, but with no records of anyone actually crossing the Bridge of Ascension before it was wrecked, she couldn’t. Instead, she said, "There always has to be something higher. Something greater to strive for. And though we may be from two completely different races with different ideals, I believe we both wish for the Godlike Rank to not be the end of the road."

Silence...

"Do you think those Dissonant creatures would know more about it...?" Lilia broke the silence, prompting a question that made everyone except for Sylvy think deeply on the subject.

"They’re doing it again..." Sylvy’s cheeks puffed as she very much disliked being excluded from the secret grown-up talk like this.

"It’s certainly possible they know something more than we do," Mikaela finally said. "But it’s likely that only the highest-ranking among their kind have the information we want. And with them having ceased their continued invasion of the Tower of Humanity, we have no idea if they’re even still here."

"They definitely are," Lilia said without a shred of doubt, surprising the Archangel. "They were targeting my son in an attempt to get at me. And though they claimed to be doing so under the pretense of acquiring my authority over that Floor without knowing that I transferred ownership to Adam, I know what they were truly after."

"!!!"

"Your Bloodline..." Mikaela’s eyes grew round, with the implications behind this too huge to imagine. "The Dissonants are actually targeting Yggdrasil??"

Lilia nodded, and as the atmosphere turned solemn, she said in a dire tone, "They almost certainly know what the Royal Yggdrasil Bloodline is capable of, and since my younger sister and the two sisters of the new generation never leave the Holy Sanctuary, they plotted against the only one with connections in the world outside."

"You..."
