Chapter 80 – The Soulless [1]

Kaden stared at the hollow portal, curiosity dancing in his blood red eyes, then glanced at the notifications panel from The Will saying he’d met a hidden condition.

Obviously, it must have been thanks to him finding this place.

"The difficulty jumped from intermediate to unknown, and the rewards aren’t even visible anymore," he muttered under his breath, one hand on his chin, expression tight with thought.

He didn’t need a genius to tell him that from now on, the danger was off the chart.

And for the first time since he entered this dungeon... there was a real chance he might die.

That made him smile.

’Death, how many coins do I have now?’ he asked inwardly.

[3500.]

’Enough to die and come back multiple times.’ He nodded, satisfied.

He took a breath, gathered his thoughts and stepped forward into the gate.

The moment he entered, the huge beast behind him slowly opened her amphibian eyes. Curiosity gleamed there now. And for the first time, a flicker of something close to... expectation.

’A child with high potential...’

’...his Will is strong too... yes... maybe this one... maybe... but... will his strength be enough for him?’

The beast shook her mossy head slowly, not wanting to get her hopes up again.

And if Kaden had heard her thoughts, he would’ve cursed her straight to hell for ignoring him all this time while understanding every word he said—and second, he’d ask:

What the actual fuck was she?

Unfortunately for him, he was already inside the gate.

Fortunately for the beast... now she could sleep peacefully without the annoying fly buzzing in her mind.

...

Kaden reappeared in an entirely new place.

Everything was white.

The ground, the sky—if it could be called that—all of it was pure white with no end in sight. And in the very center of it all, like a heartbeat frozen in time, was a coffin.

It was of regular-sized and plain white. But not boring.

Golden threads circled it in elegant spirals, forming what looked like a sigil—two giant hands, cupped around something invisible.

Looking at it, Kaden suddenly felt warmth bloom inside him. Not physical warmth—emotional.

A feeling of peace. Of kindness.

His eyes narrowed. His Will flared, moving like a reflex and crushing whatever tried to manipulate his feelings.

’What the—’

"Oh, a guest!"

The voice was sudden, warm, casual.

Kaden’s head snapped toward the sound.

A strange being floated there—male, human-looking, tall as hell, maybe seven feet. He had pure white hair and golden eyes that glowed with such unnatural warmth that Kaden instinctively took a step back.

Too warm. Too calm. Too... off.

A golden sigil shimmered on his forehead—the same one that was carved on the coffin.

"If you’re here, it means your Will and potential were high enough. And it also means... you passed little Rory’s test," the being said, stroking his chin thoughtfully.

Then he smiled.

Wide.

"Congratulations, kid. You’ve stumbled onto my inheritance. The inheritance of Hael Malaika, the one and only."

DING!

[New Quest Received: Inheritance]

[Difficulty: Near-Hell]

[Description: You have stumbled upon the inheritance of Hael Malaika, The Soulless’s Fragment. You have only one task, Child of Blood... plunder everything.]

[Rewards: Depends on performance]

[Penalty: None]

Kaden blinked. His gaze narrowed slightly as he stared at the last line.

’Soulless...?’

’What does that even mean? How can a being be soulless?’

He barely had time to finish the thought when the guy spoke again.

"Kid, are you ignoring me?" Hael asked, still radiating that too-perfect smile.

Kaden’s skin prickled. Something about that voice—it wasn’t fake. It wasn’t even menacing. It was too pleasant. That’s what made it worse.

"What’s your inheritance?" Kaden asked, wary but curious.

"Oh, perfect question!" Hael beamed.

"It’s simple. If you succeed, you’ll gain a Trait. Not just any Trait—one that can make you feared across Fokay or any other world."

Kaden leaned in slightly. The word Trait caught him hard.

He would do anything for one. A Trait didn’t drain mana. It didn’t eat stamina. It was pure, always-on power. Passive. Reliable. Ruthless.

"I’ll tell you this though," Hael continued, "my Trait’s a bit special. So special that to even use it, or obtain it, you need an abnormally high Will. And how powerful it becomes depends on your Will, too." freewёbnoνel.com

That made everything click.

Kaden smiled faintly, unbothered by this condition.

He could put every stat point into Will if that’s what it took.

"What’s the test?" he asked. "I’m ready."

Hael looked genuinely pleased.

"My test is simple. First just endure two minutes of my full Intent projection. Don’t pass out."

Kaden nodded. Took a slow breath. Readied his mind.

"I’m rea—"

BOOM.

His knees slammed the floor before he could even finish the word.

His whole body began to shake.

A white-gold aura wrapped around him—not touching his skin, not clawing at his mind, but going straight past everything...

Straight to the soul.

And that was something Kaden had never trained. Never touched. Never even thought about.

He gritted his teeth. Grabbed at his chest as if that would help.

But it didn’t.

It was like his soul was being dissected. Slashed with a scalpel made of holy flame. Little by little.

It was extremely painful.

Groans echoed across the white space. Deep, animal sounds of pain.

And Hael was still smiling.

There was no mockery nor sadism.

Just a smile. Warm and calm.

Two minutes passed.

Kaden collapsed onto the floor, body shaking, his soul deeply hurt and his eyes vacant.

Anyone else at his rank would be dead.

Only Iron Sovereignty kept him alive—and even that almost shattered.

He gasped. Sat up slowly.

"What rank are you... ? Grandmaster rank?" he asked, eyes narrowing slightly.

Hael just smiled again. "Your Will is incredible. You didn’t even cry."

"Grandmaster? Well... let’s say yes," he replied cryptically, then tossed something at Kaden.

A white-gold crystal.

"Your Will checks out. But what about your potential?" he said. "This crystal will tell me. Put your hand on it. If it glows white, that’s the lowest. Then orange. Then purple. Gold is the highest. You need at least purple to pass my test."

Kaden didn’t even hesitate.

He was confident.

He placed his hand on the crystal.

And it suddenly melted and became liquid.

A White-gold, vicious and almost alive liquid. It looked like...

’Blood? ’ he thought.

The question barely registered before the liquid surged into his body.

There was no warning. The liquid just went in instantly.

Kaden’s body slammed the floor. His soul screamed. The liquid was moving through him, touching pieces of him he didn’t even know he had.

Through the pain, he turned his head toward Hael.

He was still giving him a small warm smile. As if everything that was happening to him was not his doing.

"Good Will, good potential and looks like a good background too," Hael muttered.

Then—

He smiled wider.

"Now I just need to replace my soul with yours and take over."

Kaden froze.

His soul was disintegrating.

His memories—his identity—began to slip.

Instantly, Kaden felt his memories begin to rewrite themselves. Memories not his own started to flood into his mind and take over all of him.

His body started to tremble heavily, his eyes were vacant, void and confused.

Two sets of memories were inside his mind.

He couldn’t tell anymore—

Was he Kaden?

Was he Hael?

Was he anyone?

Who...was he?

He didn’t even have time to think about it as soon, his soul was completely devoured by Hael, making him nothing but a shell.

[You are dead.]
