Chapter 107: Awareness

Kieran opened his eyes and stared into the black space above him.

For a moment he couldn’t feel his body and he just stayed there staring into the darkness, his mind struggling to make thought.

After a while, his sense of smell returned to him and he was instantly assaulted with the thick smell of iron around him.

It was so sudden, he almost felt suffocated, but he couldn’t feel the rest of his body.

The smell of blood was the first element in this bland world he was stuck in.

For the next few hours. No, days? Weeks? Kieran wasn’t able to keep track of how long he had spent here, but he was aware when his sense of touch came back to him slowly and he could finally feel his body back again, in parts.

Each sense coming back to him was like a new stroke being added to this blank canvas until it was finally complete.

The rapid beating of his heart, the way the blood flowed through his veins and when his ability to feel came back completely, he could feel that he was laying on something wet and sticky — Blood!

The first coherent thought that had formed in his mind.

He was in a pool of blood.

After what seemed ages in a space where time seemed to have no relevance, he finally moved, turning his head to look at his two hands before getting up to his feet.

Using them as support, he pushed himself up into a sitting position and a new view appeared in front of his eyes.

After staring at the black endless void for an unknown period of time, the full view of this world was revealed to him and his kind was still too slow to give a reaction making him look in a dead manner.

In front of him a huge pool of blood which expanded into the distance until he couldn’t follow again.

The blood pool he sat in was just as still as the sky above and his existence was the only ripple in this world, like a foreign object which had stumbled into a place where it didn’t belong.

He stood up, and after a long time, wondered if he should walk around in jokes of finding anything, but he immediately gave up on that.

While looking around, his brain still trying to compute the next thought, a change finally occurred in this still world and a voice echoed through the vast space.

"You shouldn’t be here yet. Leave!"

The voice said calmly with no tint of emotion and suddenly his vision blacked out again, but this time he opened his eyes unaffected by the bright light that came from the ceiling of the infirmary that he had become so much accustomed to.

"He’s up!!"

He heard a voice which came from within the room along with a series of erratic footsteps as whoever that was, ran out of the infirmary.

’What happened?!’

A thought finally appeared in Kieran’s head.

The last thing he remembered was blacking out in the middle of the forest before suddenly awakening in a black world, laying in a pool of blood.

It didn’t take long before he was kicked out though, or did it?

Kieran didn’t know how long he had been hovering in that place, but something struck him, shaking his dull mind.

’What was that?’

He wondered, faintly recalling the series of words he heard before he fainted.

They started just after he saw Derrick’s dead body.

’Wait! Derrick?!’

His eyes widened and he tried to sit up just to be met with failure as his own body suddenly felt foreign to him.

It was like he hadn’t used his arms for such a long time and he now had issues remembering how to use them.

Before he could figure how to use them again, he heard a shuffle of steps approaching the infirmary and judging from one of the footsteps which matched that one of the people who had run out when he woke up, he could guess that they were probably all making their way in his direction.

He suddenly realized how much his hearing had improved as he had caught the sound from outside the infirmary.

Strangely though was that he didn’t seem to be overwhelmed either. Before he could check out his other abilities, the door of the room opened and the footsteps he had heard earlier appeared in the room, approaching the beg he laid on.

"He looks alive."

August’s voice traveled to his ears as he stopped at the side of the bed, entering Kieran’s field of vision.

Kieran looked at the instructor who didn’t seem to be too worried from the edge of his eyes.

"Why won’t he talk though?"

August asked, turning to face someone else in the room and Kieran tried to follow his eyes, but he still couldn’t see the person.

"I don’t know. He’s probably having problems adapting to his body now, it should fade after sometime"

The voice which was different from the first hurried one Kieran had now come to associate with the warden... said.

’He’s right! I haven’t said a word!"

Kieran became aware about his silence since he had woken up. He couldn’t have forgotten how to do that too right?

"Feels like I haven’t used my arms before!"

Kieran opened his mouth and said the first thing that came to mind. Luckily he still knew how to speak.

"Oh, he speaks! That’s good, wasn’t ready to go through the stress if he couldn’t."

"What do we do about your arms though!"

August bent over, bringing his face closer and asked.

Kieran, seeing this, raised his brows, looking at August strangely. He was the patient. How was he supposed to know the solution to how he was feeling, he didn’t even know what exactly it w—

"Like I said earlier, it should fade after a while now that he’s conscious. You can bring him over for the tests then."

The person said, walking up till he was directly opposite August on the bed. Kieran took his eyes towards him, but all he could see was a white coat and the beard less chin above him.

Before he could ask a question regarding his current situation, the man turned around, his coat flying over Kieran’s head as he made his way out of the room.
