Lost Origins: SS Ranked Awakening-Chapter 152: Comfort
"That went well. Don’t you think?"
"Hmmmm!"
Kieran replied absent mindedly to Sabrina’s words. It was quite clear that he wasn’t paying attention to her words.
"Hey!"
"What is it?"
His voice was quite impatient. At times like this, his attitude towards things he didn’t like was quite evident.
"You did quite well. I thought you would have accepted your fate a little, you know?"
"No, I don’t. Like I said earlier, I don’t want to get involved in anything you’re doing. Just call in your favor when you need me and let’s be done with!"
Kieran said, walking beside Sabrina.
"Hmm, we’ll sew about that."
’What’s that supposed to mean?’
He raised an eyebrow at her words.
"Why are where?"
Kieran asked, feeling the his face and ruffle his hair, splashing it over his face.
Without paying any attention, Sabrina had led them to the small clearing where he used to train back then.
It was looking less like a clearing now with no one to maintain it. Looks like even Ruby and Jake had quit coming to the spot.
A spot filled with some good memories for him.
"This must have been where you heard us right?"
"Yeah?"
Kieran went to sit under the big tree, his favorite spot in the little place. Looking around, fain images of him swinging his scythe as sweat flew off his body flashed across his eyes.
It had only been over half a year.
"What is it like?"
Sabrina asked, ignoring his cold attitude.
"...."
"What?"
Kieran was thrown off by the question. He couldn’t quite figure where she was heading to.
"To be....not Noble.."
She tried to say awkwardly.
"Oh, commoner!"
"No. Free!"
"..."
He took another pause, looking at her figure under the moon light. It seemed like there were somethings weighing on her mind.
’I blame that old man for feeling like this!’
"There’s no freedom in being a commoner. Maybe there is actually. We’re constrained by our position at the bottom of the food chain, but at least I don’t have to look like you!"
Sabrina smiled at his words, also taking a seat at the bottom of the smaller of the two trees.
"You’re right. Must be hard too huh?"
"Yeah. You have no idea"
Kieran said lightly this time, memories of his childhood and the constant daily struggle for survival their family fought.
The slums wasn’t a place for the weak. Everything there wasn’t just priced on money. It was priced with the blood and flesh of others.
Struggling in the slums was one thing. Facing the kids on school and the middle zone was another psychological battle too. The looks of contempt he got anytime he boarded the bus to the edge of the middle zone where his school was located. How the teachers treated him...
The life of a bottom feeder was nothing less than brutal. And that was what he was in a society like theirs, a bottom feeder.
’At least I was happy’
Kieran looked into the night sky which was unsurprisingly cloudy. They were on a strange planet after all.
He shook his head, feeling something scratching at the back of it.
Gulp!
"Want some?"
Sabrina looked to her right to see Kieran offering her a small bottle with an unreadable expression on his face.
"Isn’t that illegal in here?"
"Just say you don’t wan—"
"Sure!"
She said, swiping it off his hand before he could take it back.
’Is there really anything illegal in the camp? Yeah, illegal is just not being able to pay for it!’
"Wonder how many illegal things you’ve done lately. You seemed busy!"
Kieran suddenly felt like he could have a conversation comfortably.
’What did August out in that thing?’
Gulp!
Sabrina took a gulp from the bottle before handing it back. Her face scrunched up feeling the burn as the liquid went down her throat.
’That wasn’t what I expected!’
’Of course it wasn’t!’
Kieran thought silently seeing her scrunched up face. It had been made by his crazy instructor after all.
In his words, he wasn’t a solider if he hadn’t tasted some liquid gold.
The instructor was completely shocked when he discovered that Kieran had never tasted alcohol.
And Kieran was equally shocked to discover a new part to the man called August. He had a whole collection if several drinks.
He even had a section he warned him not to try at all costs, unless he wanted to die. From his voice, Kieran didn’t think the instructor was joking at all.
"Well, I’ve done more than a couple. Will probably do a lot more in the in coming times"
Her answer was straightforward and honest, Kieran couldn’t find anything to hate about that.
"Well, you know about me. I want to kill my own family. Aren’t you curious?"
Sabrina asked, turning to face him.
"Honestly? Yes, a little. But at the same time, I don’t really care!"
"Fair enough! What about you though?"
She asked, taking back the bottle from his hands.
"What about me?"
"Your goals! The reason you’re here? You weren’t just dropped off or something?"
She said with a small chuckle that ended the moment Kieran replied.
"I was, actually!" 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
"You’re serious?"
She turned around to meet the same expression on his face, but despite this, she could tell that he was being honest.
"How did that happen?"
"Well my parents had just ’died’ in a fire accident when I got back from school and the detective gave me a choice. Remain a bottom feeder or head over to the military!"
Kieran said after some silence, realizing that that was the first time he jad spoken about his parents death out lod to anyone.
Not even Ruby, Jake or Danzo.
’Not like they asked anyways’
"I would rather face guys like Orion than rot away with those guys back in the slums. Followed the detective, got blind folded, sedated and when I woke up, I was in a capable thingy. Came out and I was I’m the desert!"
"Fast forward, you can guess the rest."
Kieran said, waving his hand dismissively before taking another small gulp from the almost empty bottle. Good thing he haf a couple more on him.
"....wow!"
Sabrina was speechless, stretching her hand to request for the bottle of her own accord.
"I didn’t think anything like that could happen!"
"Oh, there are a lot of things you didn’t think could happen, happening, princess!"
Kieran addressed her the same way the masked man did with a small chuckle.
"Don’t call me that!"
Her voice had a sharp edge to it.
"Hmm. I wonder what your circle would say if they saw you drinking from the hands of a commoner like me. Isn’t that too degrading of your status!"
"I never asked to be born this way. There’s nothing I can do about that. But I can at least chose how I go on from there!"
Sabrina looked away and a sudden silence fell upon them both.
’..... she has a point."
Kieran thought looking up at the clouds which wrrr slowly parting away.
"My goal isn’t as crazy as yours you know. I just don’t belive my parents just died in a fire. I wanna get to the bottom of that. While I’m at that, I need to raise my standing from that of an ordinary commoner. That isn’t going to take me anywhere."
Kieran said lightly.
"I agree with that thought process. What are you going to do after though?"
"After?..."
Kieran went silent for another period of time and Sabrina waited patiently, turning to look at his side.
"After....I don’t know. Never thought of that. I’ll rather get one thing done first."
Kieran said lightly, his cold visage giving off a lonely and lost feel.
"Hmm..."
"Sorry about your parents death!"
Sabrina said after a while.
"You don’t need to!"
Kieran said honestly feeling some actual sadness in her voice as she said those words.
"Why do you want to kill your family?"
"Thought you weren’t curious!"
Her voice was lighter, the touch of sadness gone like it was never there.
"You don’t need to say it then!"
"Are you this much of a jerk? Sigh! I can’t day it even if I wanted to though!"
She said with a deep sigh.
"Hmm.."
Somethings were more personal than others and Kieran perfectly undertake that.
"Yeah."
"Been a while since I saw your male body guard. He was so all over me one time back then."
"Liam?"
Sabrina asked in genuine surprise. That didn’t fit her image of Liam.
"The other one!"
"Ethan!"
"Yeah, him!"
Kieran confirmed, noticing the sourness her tone carried
"He’s been busy cleaning up the mess he made."
"You mean the mess you made him make?"
Kieran pointed out and she chucked. He had heard the rumors after all. He had pretty much figured the purpose of those actions.
"Well, I’m supposed to marry him."
She said out of nowhere and Kieran was completely blown away, the alcohol helping him hold his reaction.
"Wow!"
"Yeah. One reason I hate my family!"
She said and they returned to being silent, just enjoying each other’s company under the bright moonlight.
It was weird for the two of them who barely spoke to have a moment like this. Yet that was what made it more enjoyable as they both couldn’t fight the sense of comfort they felt at that moment
