Chapter 153: Veylan

"You’re alright?"

Jake asked finally being able to reach Kieraj after several days.

"Yeah. It wasn’t that hard."

"What exactly did you?"

"Nothing much. Just met someone"

Kieran was reluctant to spill that he had met Sabrina yo resolve the situation Orion haf placed them in. Besides, she had made him promise that he wouldn’t spill a word.

That aside, he was sure Orion would have gotten word that he recived help from her. Those guys would be reported back to him long ago.

"You’re preparations?"

Kieran pushed the conversation forward.

"Yeah. I spoke to a few guys. We should get the chance to eliminate the target soon!"

"You’re going to kill him"

"Yeah. You didn’t know that? Oh sorry, you must have never kill—"

"It’s not that!"

"What exactly does killing this target do for you in the long run?"

Kieran interrupted Jake. Honestly, he naf no problems killing humans, but that wasn’t what was bothering him.

"Hmm. That? Alright, I’ll try to break it down."

Jake understood the reason behind his confusion.

"Most recruits of Noble lineages here, got sent by their familes to prepare them. They are the top heir candidates to becoming the next head of their familes. Some of them are the only candidates."

"Killing the heir of a family is like cutting off the life blood of the family. Heirs are usually seen as people needed to be protected by all costs, until the family sees them as ready enough to be independent."

"That concept though coukd t really work in the camp. I mean, there’s no way the camp would let those familes bring over theor full protection squad just to guard a few heirs. That would’ve defeated the whole purpose of sending them here in the first place."

"So to balance things and calm those familes, the camp created a way for them. Give them certain privileges. If they couldn’t protect themselves with high leveled awakened guards, they could do it with power. Power to bend and manipulate the rules."

"Of course, there was a price for wielding that kind of power. A heavy one at that. The camp wouldn’t just watch them go wild. That gave the other recuits a faint feeling of balance, but to me, it’s not worth much. The heirs and high class recruits who have access to this don’t do it that often, but when the time comes, they use it without any care in the world. It’s the biggest advantage they have over the rest after all"

His words brought the image of Sabrina to his head, remembering what she had said when he asked how many illegal things she had done so far.

"With that, they coukd form factions among themselves. The factions re the ultimate form of protection in the camp. It’s why the camp is pretty much as it is."

Jake said briefly, before looking up at Kieran who was still silent.

’That’s not surprising!’

Kieran thought, figuring that the leveling and contribution system was the way the camp had created to make up for the difference in recruits backgrounds and advantages. It was a path simple recruits like him could take to achieve lesser yet similar rewards.

It was a nice setup, but it had failed horribly. No one even bothered to try chasing that path again. It was far easier for them to join a noble faction and enjoy those benefits indirectly.

"How does this answer my question?"

"Like I said earlier, those heirs are the life blood of lost noble families. Kill them and their future us pretty much destroyed."

Jake said, knocking on the table. Kieran on the other hand wasn’t too satisfied woth that answer.

"Of course, that usnt enough to take down a noble family. Most of them already thought of this and have back up candidates they raise openly or in secret. So to take down a family, we first have to destroy their future, by taking out all their prospects, hidden and open!"

Jake said and Kieran’s thoughts deepened, he could already tell where this was going.

"Take out their past. Their history, their anchor"

He said lightly.

"Then crush them. You aren’t that bad!"

Jake completed his words for him.

"So?"

"Well, it’s our job to take the known guys out. Orion happens to be one of the targets, but not the prime target. The family are already handling the hidden ones and the old geezers of both familes."

Kieran looked at Jake again, reassessing his figure and origins..

The Blaze family must be insanely strong to face two Noble familes of sufficient standing alone. That was an incredible feat.

’I wonder how you have so much faith’

Kieran wondered slightly.

The camp cut them off from the events going on outside, back in the real world. He knew that the nobles had some way of contacting their familes, but Jake had no idea if they were being honest with him. We’re they losing their fights, where they winning it, how much werr they struggling?

He was pretty much clueless. Going in with nothing but blind faith and the dedication to complete his part of the mission. This wasn’t Kieran’s style, but he had already gotten himself involved and planned to see it through completely.

At least the part that was just about the camp. He had no interest in fighting a full blown war the moment he left the camp.

"So, who is this main target of yours?"

Kieran asked for the name of the person Jake had been stalling for. So many of his moves had been halted just because of this mysterious fellow

"His name is, Veylan Rathmore!"

’Veylan?’

Kieran’s expression was a little twisted, a hint of confusion filling his eyes.

’There’s no way it was a coincidence!’

Kieran thought.

It turned out that Sabrina wasn’t just concerned with her own dealings. Her words made sense now.

Veylan was an obstacle for her, but she already knew of his conflict with Jake and Ruby and his place in the conflict.

She wasn’t wrong when she said that she wouldn’t even need to make a single move.

"Sigh! This getting complicated again."

"Huh? What part?"

Jake asked heading Kieran’s the words that came out of Kieran with a sigh.

"It’s nothing."

"So, what exactly have you been doing the last few days? Don’t tell me you went just to get nothing done?"

"Hhahaha. Of course I cane up with something. You won’t need to hold back again. I don’t want to either."

"And what exactly is that?"

Kieran pushed forward.

"It’s quite simple. An ambush!"

"....."

Kieran raised his brows at those words, feeling a little surprised and happy he hadn’t heard something like a deathmatch or a challenge. At this point, the only way to move forward were to kill the said recruits and move on from it.

"And how are we suppose to do that without alerting him? He’s got a vast network as you’ve seen."

Kieran pointed out. He was quite skeptical at Jake’s plan.

It made sense, but how confident was he at fooling a man like Orion when he was helpless against his machinations over the past few days.

"Trust me. I’ve been wating to smash his head in ever since that day. There’s no possible way we are fucking this up!"

He voiced in a heavy tone.

Kieran looked at the body of his friend and decided to place his trust in him for this. Compared to how Ruby was right now, Jake’s was calm.

He always been one to do things accordingly and properly.

’Makes one wonder how he got a side like that to him’

Kieran thought lightly.

Jake right now, and Jake when he got into a fight he was enthusiastic about were tow different people. Only then the wild aura he struggled to suppress burst out with full force.

’His ability, maybe?’

The more Kieran learned about the awakened world and how things worked here, the more he was convinced of their theory that awakening was a mutation among normal humans.

There had been several cases of people suddenly changing, personality wise the moment they awakened. The degree of change varied as usual. Some even got split personalities.

Maybe that was what was going on with Jake.

Kieran simply took a wild guess. He didn’t really see the need to ask him.

"Alright, it’s an ambush then. When exactly is it then?"

"In a few days. Already made the key preparations. You just need to make some personal ones"

Jake said, placing his hand on Kieran’s shoulder. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

’Yeah, I need a new scythe.’

"Alright."

Kieran said, taking his leave.

....

"What is it, Orion?"

A low voice pushed through with a hint of irritation at the recruit in front of him.

"Oh, it’s nothing much, Veylan. I just came to offer my greetings!"

Orion said, holding a small smile on his face.

"You’ve done that. Now cut to the chase or leave immediately"

Veylan’s voice was hostile, making quite clear that the both of them weren’t on exactly good terms.

"Alright. Remember the Gale family? The one your parents wiped out? I’m sure you did. You had quite some fun watching it, didn’t you. I could remember you cheering them on as a ki—"

"Yeah, I do. What is it?"

Veylan cut in with a dark expression on his face.

"Well, there’s someone wielding their name. And I’ve got to say. They are out for blood. Your blood that is!"

"That’s what you wanted to say?"

Veylan raised a brow.

"Yeah. I’ll take my leave then."

Orion took his leave immediately without waiting to observe his reaction. He had accomplished his goals for coming here.

"That bastard is up to something!"

Veyaln muttered seeing Orion leave.

’The Gales were totally wiped out. I watched it my own two eyes.’

’Even if there is someone seeking revenge for them, I don’t mind playing a little!’

He thought with his eyes closed.
