Loving The Cursed Werewolf King-Chapter 53: What Happened To The Wolves?
<Nieverdell>
A knight rode swiftly towards the palace. He was in a hurry because he wanted to inform them that the wolf guard hut in the forest had been attacked. With lightning speed, he rode through the bustling city.
Everyone started screaming while they saved themselves and their merchandise as he passed. It didn’t matter if he stepped on other people’s goods or bumped into someone and forced them away, the knight continued to exert his horse.
"Get out of the way! Get out!!!" he shouted. "I have to go to the royal palace! Get out of the way!!"
Curses were thrown at the knight but he didn’t pay any heed. Even after he arrived at the palace gates and jumped off his horse, the man immediately galloped towards the palace hall. He passed two guards and told them to get out of the way.
The knight opened the door of the throne room and caused some of the people inside to stop their discussion.
"What’s the mess that led you to interfere with the royal discussion?" asked King Hugo Dellune in anger.
The knight stepped forward breathlessly then dropped to his knees in front of King Hugo.
"My apologies, Your Majesty. The two wolves have been found dead near the riverbank."
"WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?" shouted Prince Alexis. The thumping sound as he hit the table startled the nobles around him.
King Hugo asked everyone to leave the throne room. Now, in the great hall, only the king, Prince Alexis, and the kneeling knight were left.
Prince Alexis’ cursing voice was clearly heard as it echoed in the hall. King Hugo crossed his arms to ensure that the news that the knight conveyed was not mere miscommunication.
"How could that be? The forest has been guarded by many knights."
"According to the testimony of one of the soldiers, he said they were attacked by a wolf monster."
"Wolf monsters? You mean a wolf eats another wolf?" asked Prince Alexis. The prince laughed scornfully at the stupidity of the knight kneeling before him. There was never a story that a wolf would attack another wolf. They were carnivores, but not cannibals.
"That’s right, Your Majesty. The monster was bigger than any normal wolf. Its body is almost the size of an adult horse, with jet black color and red eyes."
King Hugo fell silent. He remembered a story when he visited the North a few years ago. They said that in the North, there roamed all kinds of monsters that were seldom seen by common men.
One of the stories the king had heard was about a wolf with jet black fur with irises as red as rubies. Residents there said only people with extraordinary luck could stay alive after seeing the monster.
But how could that monster be on his land? There had never been such a monster roaming the South. So, how could a monster cross the border without a single guard noticing? And prey on other wolves?
The palace hall became extremely silent.
"Are there any surviving soldiers?" asked King Hugo.
"Fifteen people were injured, and three people were found dead with claw wounds on their bodies."
"So, one monster fought eighteen people. Definitely not an ordinary wolf," muttered Prince Alexis as he got a nod of approval from the king.
The knight was ordered to return to bring the injured knights and soldiers so that they could be treated immediately by the palace healer. King Hugo also asked the two corpses of the wolves that were attacked by the monster to be brought to the palace for further examination.
After the throne room doors closed, Prince Alexis let out a long sigh.
"Does this mean we need new wolves to hand over to the North?" Prince Alexis asked his father.
King Hugo tapped his fingers on the wooden table in front of him.
"No. This happened because of nature and we can’t do anything."
"Then what should we do, father?"
King Hugo looked at his first son with a piercing gaze.
"What should we do? Not we, but what are YOU going to do," said the King coldly.
The crown prince wanted to curse, but he could only grit his teeth. There was no way he could talk back to his father. All of this started from his negligence.
Fuck! It was the damn wolf’s own fault that it lunged at the deer Alexis was trying to shoot.
Prince Alexis cooled himself to find a way out.
"Father, I have decided to go to the North," said Prince Alexis after thinking for a moment.
It made the king’s brows rise, but he didn’t say anything in response to the young man’s words. He waited for the plan his son would propose.
"I will explain our condition to King Ronan directly and see how Arielle is doing there," Alexis added. "We still need her, right?"
The white-bearded King Hugo nodded his head slowly. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"Make sure that girl doesn’t cause trouble in the North. We need her back to the South immediately, intact. Our agreement with Duke Pellinton must not fail."
"I’ll check on her myself," Prince Alexis promised.
The door of the hall opened and soon the rest of the royal family came in. Queen Rosalie and her two daughters, Princess Andrea and Princess Anneliese stepped inside the throne room. The three looked panicked, but both King Hugo and Prince Alexis ignored them.
"Your Majesty, is it true that our wolves were attacked by monsters? What will you do, my husband? What about our agreement with Duke Pellinton? We promised to send Arielle to become his wife in four months."
Prince Alexis turned to his father. The king looked so unimpressed by the noise that his wife and two daughters were making, so he hinted that his son should explain.
"That’s right, our wolves have been attacked by a monster we don’t recognize. That’s why I’m going to the North, to explain the latest situation to King Ronan directly and see Arielle. Regarding the agreement with Duke Pellinton, I will discuss it again after I return from the North."
Queen Rosalie took out a fan and used it to fan her sweating face. They were all worried about the political relationship they were building at the moment. If Arielle got injured in the North, then Duke Pellinton would not accept that girl as his wife.
Yes, Arielle was arranged to be married to a man in his late 40s who already had two wives. Arielle would be his third. Initially, the royal family was quite surprised by Duke Pellinton’s proposal.
The man suddenly suggested he wanted to marry Arielle. The old man firmly and clearly asked the tenth daughter of King Nieverdell to be his wife, Princess Arielle Dellune.
King Hugo could have refused, but Duke Pellinton was in charge of an area in which the silk trade route passed from the South to the Thebis Kingdom in the East.
The man also owned a diamond mine. He was very wealthy and powerful. King Hugo had always favored Duke Pellinton as his confidant.
The duke didn’t seem to be joking either. He knew Arielle was sent to the North as a prisoner until the royal family could provide a wolf pup to replace the one that was killed by Crown Prince Alexis.
After he proposed for Arielle’s hand in marriage to the king, the man easily provided a pair of wolves as a sign of his seriousness. That was why Nieverdell was able to quickly find two wolves in such a short period.
"Calm down, Queen. Duke Pellinton was already a confidant of the palace. If we can explain everything properly, that guy will definitely understand our situation. Alexis will still have his support as an heir to the throne," said the king in a flat tone.
The man didn’t even look at his wife when he said the sentence. His gaze was focused on the book in front of him. He then waved his hand. "Alexis, take your mother out."
Prince Alexis bowed respectfully and led Queen Rosalie and his two sisters out of the hall.
"Everything will be fine. Mom, don’t worry too much," Alexis said as he ushered the three out.
Princess Andrea, who had been silent all this time, suddenly held Alexis’ arm.
"Alexis, I will come with you to the North," she said firmly.
