Chapter 75: Ronan’s Conversation With Tania

Ronan continued to listen to what the maid had to say. The king smiled wryly and concluded that Tania wanted him to keep his distance from Arielle.

"And... I hope you can give Princess Arielle the attention she deserves. When we return to the south, I don’t want Princess Arielle to be disappointed in the south," Tania ended her words.

Ronan didn’t like the topic of Arielle’s return to the south the most.

"You don’t like the North, Tania? Is the North not as good as the South?" he asked her and looked at her intensely.

"Huh?" Tania was a little surprised because the king mentioned her name.

"Tell me what you need in order to stay in the North?" Ronan asked again.

"Stay in the North?"

"Yes, settle in the North. There’s one thing I don’t understand the most about you two. If the South doesn’t treat you well as a royal princess and palace maid, why are you so adamant in wanting to return there?"

True, Tania admitted that they were treated really badly in the South. However, it was where their home was. Nieverdell would always be home to them.

Tania closed her eyes tightly as she remembered the last threat from the queen before she left for the North.

"We have a lot of unfinished business, Your Majesty," she tried to give an excuse. "And I myself have family in the South."

"You’re not married, are you?" Ronan said suddenly, surprising Tania. The king continued. "And the man you love, the painter who taught Arielle to paint, can’t marry you because you’re bound by your oath to the King of Nieverdell to always take care of Arielle, right?"

"No, I’m not bound by any oath. I sincerely care for Princess Arielle..."

"I know you sincerely care for Arielle, but that doesn’t erase the fact that you couldn’t get married because of that agreement."

Tania was silent on the spot.

"H-how did you know?" she asked in a low, disbelieving tone. Even Arielle didn’t know anything. Tania only introduced the man as a close friend.

"I have my own way of getting information."

"Your Majesty, I beg you not to tell this to Princess Arielle. Considering Princess Arielle is too kind, I don’t want the Princess to feel guilty if she hears of the agreement."

Ronan nodded to accept Tania’s request just now.

The old woman gripped her clothes, she felt even more pressure. She didn’t know how much information the man had.

"Ah, in essence, I just wanted to ask Your Majesty to give Princess Arielle some time and space to think. Because Princess Arielle doesn’t have much experience, so sometimes she needs some time to think."

"I see," answered Ronan.

"And... even if it were to stay in the North for longer or to stay back in the South, I would leave all the decisions to Princess Arielle. I promise not to interfere in Princess Arielle’s decision."

"Okay."

"And..."

There were more? Ronan thought.

The woman looked down deeply at Ronan. "I want to thank you for receiving us so well. Sorry, I just brought it up now. But I am very grateful for your kindness and the hospitality of the North."

"Certainly. You two will always be welcome in the North. Tell me immediately if you intend to stay here and not return to the South," Ronan replied.

"If you have nothing more to say, I’m leaving."

"Oh, just a minute!" Tania then covered her mouth when she realized that she raised her voice in front of the king. "That... are you going to visit Princess Arielle’s room?" asked Tania doubtfully.

Ronan knew what the woman was worried about.

"Well, if you’re worried about that. I wouldn’t do that," Ronan replied, amused. The man added. "I will always respect Arielle’s wishes."

Tania was relieved to hear that. The woman bowed once. "Thank you, Your Majesty. Thank you again for your kindness."

Ronan didn’t answer.

The man waved one of his hands as he turned to leave Tania, a silent gesture for the woman to hurry back to her room because her body was already shivering.

Back in Arielle’s room.

The princess waited for what Ronan wanted to say.

"Arielle, I will not reimpose my will. I will no longer ask you to stay in the North if that doesn’t make you feel comfortable. After the South fulfills their promise, then you are free to choose."

"Sorry?" asked Arielle, who did not understand the meaning of the man’s words.

Ronan had decided to do something. He couldn’t keep Arielle at bay by killing every wolf the South could find. That would be tantamount to breaking the old covenant itself.

Maybe what he did a few days ago would be his own secret. Or maybe someday, when Arielle could be more open, Ronan would tell her but not now.

After he talked to Tania earlier, Ronan became more aware that he was too pushy on Arielle. Ronan wanted the girl to accept it as it is so that one day when he was ready to show her his wolf side, he hoped that Arielle would be more accepting.

"I just wanted to say that... I will no longer force you to stay in the North but..."

"But?"

"One day, when you want to come back here, I will gladly welcome you back."

Arielle was silent in her seat. The girl thought for a long time. She always wanted to go back to the South. But why did it feel so strange when Ronan talked about it like this?

"You don’t have to answer now because I know you’ll keep saying you want to go back South, right?" asked Ronan softly. The man got up from his sofa and gently stroked Arielle’s hair. "Get some rest, you can continue painting tomorrow."

Ronan then left Arielle and headed out of his room.

Arielle also left her seat and climbed onto her bed, she then lay down and thought about the king’s words.
