My Joker System: From Low Mana Trash to the Mightiest Wizard!-Chapter 154: The Best Master
Chapter 154: The Best Master
After the old man’s emotional episode, the three returned to discussing Hal’s wizardry.
Korvus and Isolde also learned how Hal uses the spell cards, that he could utilize two at a time, and that practically nobody could defeat him in casting speed, since he only needed to perform gestures to cast spells.
Of course, the two academy leaders had long realized that there must be something holding everything together for the young man, but since Hal didn’t share it, they decided to respect his decision and not ask.
They were already content with what he had shared, anyway.
It was a shame that even Hal didn’t know exactly how to earn the said Chaos Points apart from winning big events, killing monsters, destroying the fell race’s plans, and taking part in chaotic events.
Otherwise, the two academy leaders would’ve helped him.
The conversation about him inevitably ended with Isolde granting his request of freedom.
To his surprise, he even received a simple necklace artifact with a strangely soothing amethyst pendant as a bonus, which could apparently be activated by infusing one’s mana into it.
The accessory would then teleport the user—along with up to five others making direct contact with any part of Hal’s body—back to Isolde’s office.
It was a handy life-saving talisman.
Hal decided not to use his last request just in case he needed it in the future.
However, he pulled a rather underhanded move that amused Isolde and left Korvus silent:
"Oh, right, my mother, Helena Fennec, and Aunty Lynn Kasai are now living in Bunroon Town. They still can’t move to the city just yet, since they’re helping the other villagers from Poporo settle down. I... uh... believe it would be difficult for Ennya to focus on her training if she wasn’t sure of her mother’s safety..."
The old deputy felt he at least owed this to Hal, so he gladly indulged the unofficial request.
It indeed wouldn’t be easy to focus on oneself if the safety of one’s family isn’t secured.
"Worry not, I’ll send people to guard Lynn Kasai from the shadows," assured Korvus in a rare, joking tone.
Hal momentarily failed to suppress a smile before Isolde interjected,
"Well, since you’re going to reserve your final request for later, let’s move on to another matter."
Hal’s brows raised at the headmistress’ words, not expecting that the academy leaders also had something to discuss with him.
"So, congratulations, Hal Fennec. You’ve been chosen, along with Felix and Liora, to become an official Magna Prospect. You may choose to accept or decline. If you accept, you’ll be under the tutelage of a master, though the empire would probably struggle to find one for you due to your affinity for the Chaos Element. I’ll be honest, you’re the first in the Imperium’s entire history."
Isolde noticed that the young man’s expression suddenly shifted to worry, so she quickly reassured him,
"Worry not. Strange elements, while rare, aren’t new to the empire. I assure you that my contacts would respect and understand your decision to hide certain details about your wizardry, especially since you’re a commoner. Also, the empire has long been aware of, and weary of, the aristocratic society’s selfish games. There’s no need for you to overthink things. The empire will wholeheartedly support you."
Hal’s expression eased a bit after hearing Isolde’s assurance, but he was still well aware that he was under the mercy of those in power..
"What about my freedom, then? If I choose to become a Magna Prospect, would I still be free to do what I want, or would I end up like Ennya?"
The two academy leaders fell silent.
They already knew Hal was leaning toward rejecting the offer.
"That... I can promise your freedom as long as you’re in the academy, but outside of it, I’m afraid you’ll have to follow the arrangements of your master."
Korvus and Isolde wanted Hal to be a Magna Prospect, but at the same time, what was important wasn’t the title. It was whether he could grow to his full potential.
A Magna Crest from the emperor’s Imperial Artifact would certainly be a significant boost.
However, Hal would have no chance of receiving one if he didn’t reach his full potential.
’Chaos Magna...’
The two academy leaders couldn’t deny that the mere concept sounded impressive.
"Then what if Headmistress Isolde becomes my master? She’s a Former Magna, right?" Hal suddenly suggested, making the two dumbfounded for a moment.
Isolde’s brows raised as excitement suddenly filled her seasoned heart.
Yes... that could work...
She doubted that any master could truly help Hal, anyway. It was just that an apprenticeship was required to officially receive the title.
She and Korvus were the ones who understood the young man’s Chaos Wizardry the most, and perhaps she could provide the minimal support Hal needed better than any other person the young man didn’t trust...
The two academy leaders locked eyes and nodded at each other.
"Great idea. I shall report that you would accept on the condition that I become your master. Worry not, I believe this arrangement has a high chance of being approved by the emperor."
Hal bowed in appreciation.
"Thank you, Headmistress."
It was already difficult for him to trust the two academy leaders, so trusting a former Magna who might be from an aristocratic family would be even harder, though Isolde was also one such person...
A smile emerged on the middle-aged woman’s face the next moment.
"It’s settled, then." Isolde began, "Since you’re going to be my disciple, I shall make the call whether to be stingy with you or not, and I’ve decided not to, as you don’t seem like an irresponsible person. I shall give you another gift, follow me."
Isolde pulled out her wand and began casting a spell.
The next moment, a void portal appeared, into which the headmistress entered, urging Hal to follow.
Hal felt half-guilty and half-excited.
He wasn’t as "not irresponsible" as the headmistress thought he was...
Nonetheless, he quickly followed after Korvus.
Hal looked around in wonder as he stepped out of the portal, finding himself in front of a grand door within a spacious, circular hallway.
"This entire floor is yours," Isolde said, handing him a small purple key. "The only way for others to enter and exit this place without my permission is through the void portal generated by this void key. Make sure you keep it safe. My gift for you is inside that room."
Hal nodded and swallowed as he received the key, his heart racing in excitement and curiosity.
He couldn’t wait to see what the actual gift was.
Slowly, he creaked the door open, his eyes widening as he realized that he had been given his very own arcanist workshop by the headmistress.
"The instruments inside are probably outdated. Here are ten gold coins. Go and purchase whatever you need."
"Thank you, Master! You’re the best!!"
