Chapter 104: The Calm Before Storm

"I like this arrangement."

Aaron grinned widely, leaning against the passenger seat while Claire drove her sedan with a small smile playing on her lips.

In the back, Eva lounged across the whole seat, casually chomping on their supplies of chips and junk food that they brought for the journey.

Due to Gammora being only a day’s drive away, their group decided to simply take their cars and drive there, which would be a cheaper and more convenient alternative.

After all, they won’t need to worry about getting rental vehicles or waiting for public transports in a city that’s being assaulted by monsters.

Being a total of 6, the distribution went without a hitch as Claire and Aaron were no-brainer, and Eva being Claire’s closest friend earned her way into the car.

The other one was driving a little far ahead, which was a modern SUV owned by Jaq. Loud music blasted from their open windows, but Claire ignored their tomfoolery and rolled up the windows instead.

"Of course you do, both your lovers are with you in the same car." Eva commented lazily, picking up another chip and eating it.

Aaron’s grin became wider, "Indeed, my Eva is so smart!"

Claire coughed at his words, her eyes giving him a judgy side eye that made him feel like he just uttered top tier blasphemy.

"Anyways." Quickly avoiding the topics that made her jealous, Aaron diverted, "Are we going to drive overnight or stop by at a hotel?"

Eva was the first one to answer, "Depwends, If those retwards don’t overdwink, we can drive overnight." she said while chewing.

Claire’s eyelids twitched in frustration, "Eva, stop fucking eating like a pig in the back! No wonder you’re getting fatter! Ugh, I don’t know what Aaron even liked in you."

The woman in question simply let out an astonished, pained "Hawww" as if asking ’How can you even say that’ but being too lazy to actually word it out.

The crunches of her eating stopped for a few seconds, but just before they thought that she might have put it down finally, the sound of plastic ripping could be heard clearly.

Without a single care for the two in the front, Eva let another packet rip, picking up a few chips at a time and eating.

But it wasn’t as if she was a complete monster.

Every once in a while she extended her hand and offered the chips to Aaron and Claire in the front.

When she offered this time, Claire simply snatched the chips and tossed it out of the window saying, "Stop pigging up."

"HEYYY! It was a new packet!" Eva began shaking Claire’s seat, but to no avail, "How dare you waste food, bitch!"

When she noticed that Claire wasn’t offering any response, Eva hummed inwardly, turning her gaze to Aaron who was watching with an amused smirk.

"Dearrr!" she cooed with an overdose of sweetness in her voice, surprising both Aaron and Claire, "Look, she threw away my chips packet!" Eva sniffled, pointing at Claire accusatorily.

Aaron could only blink in response, completely stunned by the switch.

While Claire’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, her eyelids twitching as if her muscles itself were spasming.

"Shut up." she hissed coldly.

But who was Eva? Her best and childhood friend, used to Claire’s nature.

She didn’t back down, but doubled up!

"Dearrr!" she cooed again, more stress behind her words, "See! She is now shouting at me! Won’t you help your lovely, cute, pitiful lover???"

And as if suddenly realizing something, her mouth parted in shock, "Wait! Were you lying to me when you said you will love all of us equally?! Already showing favouritism!?"

Aaron deadpanned, too stunned by Eva’s shenanigans to mount any reply.

"Whaaa! I shouldn’t have trusted you! Liar!" Eva didn’t care about his lack of replies or Claire’s rising irritation, as she continued her act.

Hell, she was so into it that she even managed to leak out some fake tears, wiping them with the sleeve of her sweatshirt.

"Eve, quieten down before I toss you out of the car." Claire warned, drumming her fingers on the leathered steering wheel, controlling her nerves to the best of her ability.

"Haha," Aaron laughed as well, playing along with Eva’s act slightly as he gently cupped her cheeks, wiping her stray tears before she could use her sweatshirt.

Eva froze, her fake tears instantly stopped spilling and her cheeks began to heat up at his gentle touch.

She coughed exaggeratedly, "Thank you dear," she mumbled, trying her best to continue her earlier act but her brain felt like a mush.

"Y-you still didn’t scold her for throwing my chips away," Eva said in a small voice, looking at Claire whose eyes now appeared darkened.

Knowing full well that bullying her more would only spell murder, Eva nodded in satisfaction and dropped the topic once Aaron scolded Claire and told her not to throw it away again...

Throughout the journey, time continued to pass and Eva kept blowing through their reserves so much that they had to stop at a highway general store to restock.

But of course, after nearly 8 hours of continuous drive, no matter how smooth, Claire began to get tired and switched with Eva.

Going into the backseat, she was tempted to tease Eva this time, but she felt so exhausted that she ended up dozing off instead.

Eva drove for nearly 8 hours as well, both cars making stops at restaurants and gas stations every once in a while.

With only 3 hour drive left and Eva getting exhausted, Aaron finally took the wheels, with Jaq driving the SUV.

However 2 hours later, with the city’s outskirts on the horizon, the mood suddenly shifted.

Gone were the long peaceful highways... the peaceful breeze...

Aaron and Jaq both hit the brakes one after the other, reducing the car’s speeds as their eyes took in the view that lay ahead.

In the distance, smoke was clearly visible, wafting out into huge gray clouds.

Cars lined up in the distance, appearing like a queue of ants walking out of their nest. But of course, the reality was much different.

They were the residents of the place, lower level people who had no chance against the monsters and the government had no intentions of promising them their safety when they couldn’t.

Hence, they were running away with whatever they managed to pack up.

This was the reality of a high tiered labyrinth break... and this was only the outskirts...
