On Our Wedding Day My Husband Announced His First Love Online-Chapter 88: My Mom Knew Clara Langley Was My Older Brother’s Girlfriend?
"Hello...?"
"Miss Joyce." A deep, low, and husky voice came through the receiver.
The voice sounded somewhat familiar.
I couldn’t help but frown slightly, but I just couldn’t place who it was.
"You are...?"
"William Westwood."
When I heard the name "William Westwood," I froze for a moment. It took me a few seconds to process it. ’William Westwood?’
’Clara Langley’s ex-husband?’
’Why is he calling me?’
But then I remembered the intimate photo of my brother and Clara Langley he had given me last time. I pressed my lips together. "Mr. Westwood, is there a reason you’re calling me?"
William Westwood let out a soft chuckle, but it sent a sinister chill down my spine.
"I presume Miss Joyce is already aware that your brother interfered in my marriage..."
I never expected him to be so blunt. Then it occurred to me that the Westwood Family, despite their decline, was an old family with a century of history. Their foundations were still intact. If he really wanted to go after my brother, it would be child’s play.
My heart skipped a beat, but I tried my best to remain calm. "My brother was deceived by Clara Langley."
"Deceived?" William Westwood sounded as if he’d just heard a joke. "Deceived him of what? What does Miss Joyce think your brother has that’s worth deceiving him for?"
I didn’t know how to answer that.
My brother really didn’t have anything worth taking.
That was something I had never been able to understand either.
Logically speaking, with Clara Langley’s status, what kind of man couldn’t she get?
She had even wrapped a successful, married man like Theodore Grant around her little finger. What use could my brother, an unemployed drifter, possibly be to her?
Just then, Sebastian Forrest frowned slightly and held out his hand, gesturing for me to give him the phone.
I knew he wanted to help me.
’But this is my problem. Sebastian can help me once, but he can’t help me forever.’
I immediately put the phone on speaker, took a deep breath, and said, "Mr. Westwood, surely you didn’t call me this early in the morning just to call me to account?"
William Westwood chuckled again. "You’re overthinking it, Miss Joyce. I am, in fact, simply here for an explanation."
I subconsciously parted my lips to speak, but I saw Sebastian Forrest shake his head at me, so I swallowed the words that were on the tip of my tongue.
I took another deep breath and said coldly, "Even if you’re looking for someone, you should be looking for my brother. What kind of explanation do you want from me?"
"Oh?" William Westwood suddenly sounded intrigued, his voice tinged with a manic eagerness. "Are you really telling me to go to your brother for an explanation, Miss Joyce?"
"Yes."
’My brother caused this mess, so of course he has to face the consequences!’
’Otherwise, he’ll really think I’m the villain who ruined his relationship with Clara Langley!’
"Fine. I understand," William Westwood said, then promptly hung up.
"Hello...?" I hadn’t expected him to just hang up like that. I panicked. Just as I was about to call back, Sebastian Forrest grabbed my hand. "Don’t panic. Keep your composure."
I nodded, clenching my fists subconsciously. My mind was a complete mess, and I couldn’t make sense of anything.
"William Westwood isn’t acting without reason. Your brother must have been in contact with Clara Langley for a long time..."
"But so many people are involved with Clara Langley. Why is he only targeting my brother?" I couldn’t help but ask with a frown.
Clara Langley was having an affair with Vincent Lombard and is pregnant with his child.
And now she’s about to marry Theodore Grant.
No matter how you look at it, my brother is just an insignificant, disposable pawn.
Besides, Clara Langley has already cast him aside!
Sebastian Forrest smiled. "He can’t afford to provoke the Grant Family."
Besides, this is Kington, and the Grant Family’s roots are here.
William Westwood had to pull strings with Vincent Lombard just to get treatment in Kington. How could he possibly go after the Lombard and Grant families?
’So, he’s just picking on the weakest link!’
’And my brother is that weak link!’
"Don’t worry. I’ll arrange for some people to protect your brother discreetly. I won’t let anything happen to him," Sebastian Forrest reassured me.
Hearing this, I looked at him, my face full of gratitude. "Thank you, Senior Forrest."
Sebastian Forrest smiled. "You don’t have to be so formal with me. Go on and eat first. I’m going to make a call to sort this out."
I nodded quickly.
I watched Sebastian Forrest step aside to make a call while I continued to eat, though I couldn’t taste a thing. The food that had seemed delicious just moments ago now tasted like cardboard.
"Alright, I’ve given the instructions. Don’t worry, your brother will be fine."
"Okay, tha—" I swallowed the "thank you" that was about to escape my lips.
Sebastian Forrest smiled. "It’s alright. Let’s eat."
But just then, Jude Miller, who had been silent all this time, suddenly frowned. "Now that you mention it, I think I remember something..."
Sebastian Forrest and I looked up at him in unison.
Jude Miller didn’t keep us in suspense and said directly, "Last month, I saw Clara Langley and your brother at the hospital..."
His brow furrowed slightly. "I didn’t think much of it at the time, though... I just assumed Clara Langley was at the hospital for some charity event..."
"Where did you see them?"
"Outside your mother’s hospital room."
I froze. I never expected that answer.
"What was Clara Langley doing at the hospital?"
"I don’t know," Jude Miller said, shaking his head. "I just glanced over at them and didn’t think anything of it. If you hadn’t just mentioned your brother and Clara Langley, I probably wouldn’t have even remembered..."
I pressed my lips together. Forget Dr. Miller; even I, his own sister, could never have imagined my brother would one day get involved with Clara Langley.
"Do you think..."
Just then, Sebastian Forrest suddenly looked up at me, his thin lips pressed into a line. "Was Clara Langley there to see your mother?"
I was taken aback and retorted almost instinctively, "How is that possible?"
Sebastian Forrest’s eyes were dark and bright, holding a singular focus beneath his cool, casual demeanor. He said in a low voice, "Thinking back now, the first time your mother fainted after seeing the news about Clara Langley and Theodore Grant’s scandal... perhaps it wasn’t just because of you..."
His words left me so stunned I couldn’t speak.
After a long moment, I finally found my voice. "You... you’re saying my mother knew Clara Langley was my brother’s girlfriend? So that’s why she..."
For a moment, I felt as if the blood in my veins had frozen solid.
It was such an absurd reason, yet now, it seemed to make perfect, logical sense...
’Clara Langley approaching my brother really was premeditated...’
’So, what was her motive—’
An answer was on the verge of surfacing, and my heart sank to the pit of my stomach...
