Only God-Chapter 613 - 515: Perils Cannot Destroy Golan!
During the night, Larsen Town began to rain, and the feeble wails of the wounded were soon drowned out by the sound of rainfall. At this moment, the people of Golan were still unaware that the Boot Fortress ahead of Larsen Town had already been breached, and that more legions were being dispatched to Larsen Town. Countless pairs of eyes would soon converge upon this small town, where many would witness the survival or fall of Golan.
Under the command of Baron Ambrose, the people of Golan tirelessly repaired defensive fortifications throughout the night despite the rain. They had stripped the trees from both inside and outside the town in preparation, mending wooden towers, fences, barricades, and the Earth Spikes in the trenches.
The rain fell densely. Weiset closed his eyes, thinking tomorrow would be the last day. If Larsen Town did not fall tomorrow, his father would complete the encirclement.
This son of the Earl lay awake with anxiety but knew he must rest. He closed his eyes, trying his best to calm himself. He no longer felt despair and fear; the gloom of before had been swept away, replaced by a fighting spirit that filled his chest.
The rain poured down incessantly until the early morning but showed no sign of letting up. Dwarves, after a night of rest, seemed unable to wait any longer and launched a small-scale attack beneath the dense curtain of rainfall.
About two thousand Dwarves rushed toward Larsen Town, but were quickly consumed by the hastily repaired fortifications. The persistent rain considerably slowed down the advance of these Dwarves, causing them to slip en masse under the hail of arrows and stones. Before the echoes of the horns had dissipated, this small-scale assault had already failed.
The Dwarves were repelled, suffering the loss of several hundred in casualties. This small victory bolstered the morale of the people of Golan, but a greater danger loomed behind.
"They’re conducting a probing attack, and if the rain lightens or stops, they are going to swarm us like the Plague God’s insects," Baron Ambrose said gravely, turning to face Weiset.
"Pray the rain doesn’t stop... If it continues, and the ground isn’t too muddy, our Cavalry can take full advantage," he added.
Upon hearing this, Weiset replied, "Scatty will protect us; let’s hope the ground isn’t so muddy that it trips the horses."
The rain persisted. The Dwarf Legion Commanders had been waiting for a break or lightening of the rain; otherwise, the Dwarves would suffer great casualties.
Once there was a suitable opportunity to attack, the commanders were confident that with their advantage in numbers, they could easily capture Larsen Town—they had already assembled seven legions there.
By noon, the sky was a dull gray, and the rainfall had lessened compared to before. After consulting with each other, the Dwarf Legion Commanders made a swift decision to sound their horns collectively, causing it to seem as though even heaven and earth shook with the noise.
Thousands of Dwarves, like swarms of bees, began attacking the insignificant town from two different directions. Once they captured it, they would see the walls of the Royal City of Nuo Lang and, within a foreseeable time, occupy the entire Kingdom.
The smell of blood and the pungent smell of the earth wafted in the air. Horns, trumpets, whistles, and drums resounded piercingly through the sky. The Dwarves roared into battle, advancing towards the Golan positions.
Golan soldiers, with raindrops on their helmets, hurled stones and arrows, trying to hold back enemies several times their number. The muddy earth greatly slowed the advance of the Dwarves, and most of their arrows and stones were blocked by the defensive fortifications of Larsen Town. At that moment, they were like punching bags taking hits.
Weiset sent out a troop of Cavalry to harass and raid the flanks of the Dwarf legions, but the commanders learned from past experiences. The son of the Earl soon found that as the Cavalry began their harassing attacks, the Dwarves started deploying reserve forces from their positions, trying to envelop the flanking Cavalry.
Left with no choice, Weiset had the harassing and raiding Cavalry pull back. The rain had slowed the actions of the Dwarves, and their troops ended up missing their encirclement targets
The situation on the battlefield was not optimistic. Baron Ambrose, stationed in Larsen Town, soon realized the Dwarves had far greater numbers than the previous day, and he faintly sensed the fall of Boot Fortress.
Baron Ambrose sighed to the sky, murmuring the names of his family members pessimistically and praying softly to the Divine beings. Afterward, he rapidly issued various orders. Though timely, under the relentless onslaught of the Dwarves, like a tide against fortifications, the Garrison of Larsen Town began to fall back step by step.
Giant creatures pushed huge Bed Crossbows, but the rain from last night until today had soaked the crossbows through, rendering the siege bolts they fired weak and ineffective. Left with no choice, the Dwarves temporarily abandoned these siege engines, which were usually a source of pride, for they had enough soldiers to flatten the small town.
As the Dwarf legions reached the low walls of Larsen Town, hundreds of spears thrust and hundreds of longswords chopped down. A brutal melee battle began anew, with both sides continuously throwing down bodies.
Upon seeing the Dwarves reach the walls, tied up by the Golan defenders, Weiset repeated his previous tactic. The Cavalry took advantage of their mobility, shaking off the Dwarves attempting their envelopment, and then made a fierce charge against the weak right flank of the Dwarf legions.
Weiset raised his longsword high, and the Cavalry let out a battle cry. The horses lowered their heads, stretching out their necks as the sound of their hooves shook the earth. The banners of Golan fluttered, and the Cavalry straightened their spears, charging in waves. Yelling "Adversity cannot break Golan!" they charged toward the right flank of the Dwarf legion.
