78 -74: The Rescued Sub-beastmen
“I get it.” Tangmo spoke coquettishly, then turned around and tugged Baiyue away.
Baiyue trembled all over, pleadingly looked at Luo’er, but before Luo’er could express any stance, she was dragged away by Tangmo.
Watching the two disappear into the distance, Luo’er could only sigh helplessly, then summoned the rest of the team over and assigned everyone to stand guard for the two girls.
According to Luo’er’s plan, three men formed a fan-shaped cordon around the location where the girls went into the water, each approximately a hundred meters apart.
Although this distance seemed close, considering the obstruction from the jungle, it would still take others some time to come and offer support, so it wasn’t wise to spread the guards further apart.
Luo’er, cradling his rifle against a tree trunk, seemed more relaxed when alone and couldn’t help but yawn.
Since entering the Otherworld, they had been constantly on the move, barely staying in any location for more than a week.
The frontline headquarters had initially been unable to provide for them properly, failing even to supply each soldier with a horse, causing a great deal of hardship.
Luo’er hadn’t had a good night’s sleep in days.
On top of guarding for others at night, the pressure of leading weighed heavily on him.
Every time Luo’er wanted to close his eyes and rest, images of the squad that had tried to assassinate them would emerge in his mind, constantly reminding him of the threats that lurked in the darkness.
Now that the case of the missing weapons had been temporarily wrapped up, they could have a good sleep without worrying about hidden threats.
With this thought, Luo’er’s eyelids began to droop, and a voice in his head urged him to rest for just a minute.
Following the guidance in his mind, Luo’er finally gave in and closed his eyes.
Before long, he was immersed in the web of dreams, losing his caution towards his surroundings.
He was oblivious to a rustling sound gradually approaching from a distance.
Suddenly, a small figure burst from the bushes in front of Luo’er, knocking him over with its unexpected charge.
Jolted from his dream, Luo’er scrambled to see who had knocked him over.
It was a very fragile-looking child, with thick curly hair, making it difficult to discern the gender.
But what first drew Luo’er’s attention was their ears – they weren’t typical human ears but rather, fluffy ears reminiscent of a rabbit’s, sticking up high on top of the child’s head.
The child wore simple clothing, seemingly hastily stitched together from the most basic fabric.
“A Sub-beastman?” Luo’er’s mind spun with this thought.
The child was covered in blood, looking terrified and disheveled.
The shock of crashing into Luo’er seemed to be too much as they knelt on the spot, trembling.
Luo’er blinked in surprise, soon regaining his senses.
He quickly pulled out his handgun and cocked it, aiming at the terrified Sub-beastman child.
“Who are you?” Luo’er demanded sternly.
He wouldn’t allow himself to drop his guard just because the child was young.
He knew he had to be cautious in any situation in the Otherworld.
The child didn’t answer Luo’er, but just stared at the gun in his hand with a look of desperation.
Suddenly, rustling sounds stirred from the undergrowth again, and the child shivered, turning his head to look in fear.
Soon, a few robust men emerged from the jungle.
They looked ferocious, their sharp teeth exposed, dressed in tattered, simple animal skins.
Each carried a metal blade or mace.
As these men approached, Luo’er was immediately hit by a foul smell coming off them, a mixture of urine and body odor.
With their appearance, two words sprang to his mind: “Beastmen?”
When the Beastmen saw the Sub-beastman child, they paused a moment before slowly emerging from the jungle, grumbling in the Beastmen’s language.
Looking at the Sub-beastman child, Luo’er saw the child trembling in fear upon seeing the approaching Beastmen.
The child was so terrified that a pool of liquid slowly seeped out beneath him.
Luo’er glanced at the child, then at the Beastmen, and hesitated.
He then grabbed the child by the back of his collar and yanked him roughly behind him, aiming his gun at the Beastmen.
“Stand still!
Stop right there, or I’ll shoot!” Luo’er gave a warning, but whether it was because they saw his Half-elf features, the Beastmen seemed unfazed by his warning, rudely laughing it off.
Luo’er looked back at the Sub-beastman child who was staring at him with wide eyes, clearly not understanding why he was helping him.
Luo’er gritted his teeth, kept one hand on his gun, and with his other hand, he slowly flicked off the safety on his rifle and pushed the bullet into the chamber.
The Beastmen didn’t pay attention to Luo’er’s movements, but continued to advance.
Resolute, Luo’er suddenly pulled the trigger.
Rapid handgun shots took down the leading Beastman, a series of bullets hitting him in the head and half of it was blown off.
The Beastmen, seeing this, roared and rushed at Luo’er who discarded his handgun and readied his rifle for a quick burst of fire.
Dada dada…
dada dada…
dada dada…
Even in the most dangerous moment, Luo’er still habitually set his rifle to semi-automatic.
A series of bullets quickly knocked down two Beastmen; one of them managed to reach him and swung his knife at Luo’er.
Luo’er held up his rifle crosswise, and the knife clanged harmlessly against the uneven rail of the rifle.
However, the Beastman had clearly underestimated the material of an Earth weapon; his blade only managed to scrape off some paint, but it had already been blunted.
However, Luo’er didn’t give him a second chance.
He spun his spear around, dissipating the beastman’s power and thrusting him aside.
Immediately lifting his gun, he shot him right in the head.
The last two beastmen, seemingly fearless even in the face of their companion’s gruesome end, roared and charged at Luo’er.
He aimed at them, primed to shoot, only to find that his magazine had unknowingly run out.
At that moment, as his blood turned cold with surprise, a familiar gunshot rang out behind him.
One of the beastmen, mid-juvenile, had his head blown open and fell in a peculiar pose.
The remaining beastman was about to approach Luo’er when a surge of magical fluctuations emanated from behind.
Dense ice spikes instantly turned the beastman into a Swiss cheese, and he fell over in agony, crying out in pain.
Luo’er wasn’t idle either.
Upon realizing that he was out of ammo, he moved swiftly to reload his magazine.
He pulled the bolt, aimed at the beastman writhing on the ground, and killed him instantly with two quick shots.
“Luo’er!” a familiar voice called from behind.
Tangmo appeared, dressed in a simple cloak that exposed her bare legs.
Carrying a magic wand in one hand and holding her cloak with the other, she ran towards Luo’er.
The sight of her made Luo’er turn his head away, blushing, he said, “Moumou, your clothes!”
“What does it matter?
There’s no one else around!” Tangmo said nonchalantly.
“Who said there isn’t?” Luo’er said, without daring to turn his head, he pointed to the young sub-beastman child lying nearby.
“Ah!” Tangmo exclaimed in surprise and ran back.
After a short while, Cheng Ziang arrived by his side too.
Seeing Ziang, Luo’er finally breathed a sigh of relief.
He made a cautionary gesture to Ziang, then took advantage of the gap to check on the sub-beastman child.
“Who are you?” Luo’er stared and asked.
The child didn’t respond, just staring at him with wide eyes.
However, Luo’er could tell that the child’s fear had significantly subsided.
“Can’t you talk?” Luo’er tilted his head, his tone much softer than before.
“Tha-thank you…” After a while, the child finally mustered enough courage to stammer out his words of gratitude.
“You speak Tasta?” Luo’er asked, surprised.
After a moment’s thought, Luo’er took out some emergency rations and a water bottle from his bag and handed them to the child.
The child accepted the food, sniffed it, then quickly began to devour it.
Watching him eat, Luo’er sank deep into his thoughts.
The child was undoubtedly a member of the sub-beastman race, but why would these beastmen want to capture him?
Aren’t beastmen and sub-beastmen from the same race?
While Luo’er was still thinking, Tangmo and Baiyue, now fully clothed, came over.
Baiyue froze upon seeing the child, staring at him in disbelief.
“Luo’er, who is he?” Tangmo turned to Luo’er and asked about the sub-beastman child.
“I’m not sure, but what’s clear is that he was being hunted down by these beastmen,” replied Luo’er.
“Beastmen…” Hearing his reply, Tangmo cast a glance at the grotesque bodies lying on the ground.
Squeamish at the sight of all the blood, she snuggled against Luo’er’s arm for comfort.
“Damn, what happened?” Hu Daoke arrived late to the scene, hugging his machine gun.
Upon seeing the scattered corpses, he couldn’t help but exclaim.
The sight of the towering figure of Hu Daoke scared the young sub-beastman, who began to shake uncontrollably again.
He swiftly scanned his surroundings before bolting towards Baiyue, clutching her waist and hiding behind her.
Luo’er was surprised, and not by the child’s reaction to Hu Daoke.
It was Baiyue he was curious about.
He was bewildered when she failed to avoid the child.
Given her prowess – she was the lightweight champion in women’s hand-to-hand combat in their academy – evading the child would have been child’s play, and she could even strike back with ease.
Yet she allowed the child to cling on to her, which was unexpected for Luo’er.
Glancing at Baiyue, he saw no signs of struggle.
She just seemed a little uncomfortable with the child’s closeness.
That’s when it occurred to him.
Baiyue was also a sub-beastman, and she would instinctively feel a certain kinship towards the sub-beastman child, and so she didn’t resist his approach.
