Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space-Chapter 692 - 567: Playing Dumb
The unreliable mom, Jiang Jiangyu, wouldn’t consider herself negligent as a mother. At the moment, she was following behind Mr. Lin, pointing at the shelf in the bedroom.
"Dad, this is a display shelf, right? I’ve heard it’s for putting antiques to show class. Unfortunately, we don’t have much to our name, so the kids are a bit short-changed."
Mr. Lin glanced at her. Her intentions were too obvious. He refused to respond and continued looking through room by room.
Jiang Jiangyu didn’t mind. She didn’t believe that saying more wouldn’t get through to Mr. Lin; after all, it was his eldest grandson. Besides, she wouldn’t take anything back to her own family, and even if she did, her parents wouldn’t accept it.
"Dad, look at this wooden bed, I heard it’s some kind of gilded canopy bed, which only aristocrats could afford in the past. It’s a pity it’s not part of a set. If it were a complete set for the kids, they’d be so proud."
Mr. Lin couldn’t bear it any longer, pointing at the four upright poles on the bed, "You’re aware of the type of wood, right? Don’t listen to nonsense. Even I, a simpleton, can see it’s just an ordinary bed."
Jiang Jiangyu nodded, "If you call yourself a simpleton, Dad, that would make people laugh their teeth out. Maybe we shouldn’t keep it then, it might cause a laugh if someone saw it later."
Lin Aiguo looked at Mr. Lin wordlessly, standing there, unwilling to move. He wished his perceptive nephew would quickly come and take this fool away.
As for his own brother by his side, he’d lost hope in him. Who knows what he’s giggling about. No wonder he spoiled such a troublesome wife.
Lin Aiguo just wanted to go back and ask his wife if their daughter was mistakenly switched with his brother’s child. Why does he increasingly feel like his daughter takes after his sister-in-law?
"Dad, look at this soft couch; is it like mom’s one? Sadly, this one has no fragrance. Even if I wanted to buy it, I couldn’t."
Mr. Lin replied to her, "That one could exchange for your entire courtyard."
Jiang Jiangyu was stunned upon hearing this, and after a while, ran out of the room, following behind Mr. Lin, "Dad, is it true that all fragrant woods are valuable?"
Mr. Lin walked on without turning back, "Ask Lao’er, he knows."
Jiang Jiangyu still followed him, "Okay, I’ll keep you company for a nice stroll first."
Mr. Lin wanted to say, "Go mind your own business, I don’t need your company." But with his eldest son there, he decided not to embarrass Lao’er.
Then, from the East Wing to the west wing, Jiang Jiangyu expressed her dissatisfaction with everything and wanted everything changed. Just when Mr. Lin couldn’t bear it any longer, when he was about to snap.
Lin Dingsheng came out to the rescue with a smiling face.
As soon as he came in, he called out, "Grandpa, you must be exhausted. Let’s head back first, we can visit again when we have time in the future. After all, this is our house, we can come whenever we’d like."
Seeing his smiling eldest grandson, Mr. Lin’s mood lifted. He glanced at the sky outside and nodded with a smile. Indeed, it was getting late.
On the way back, Mr. Lin looked at the night view outside, watching young people hurriedly passing by on the streets, and finally remembered he had a grandson.
He turned his head to look at his eldest son, "Xiao Hui is about to graduate, right? Have you decided where to send him? The child is growing up, but waiting for him to get married and get a house could take forever; shouldn’t you buy a small courtyard?"
Lin Aiguo nodded upon hearing this, "I will consider it."
"Compared to most kids, our kids get married quite late. You should find Xiao Hui a nice wife sooner. Time really flies."
Listening to Mr. Lin’s words, Lin Aiguo stared out the window in a daze for a moment. Time waits for no one, and he was about to become a grandfather.
The three of them fell into silence for a while.
After a long time, Mr. Lin said, "After we get home and have some food, spend some time with your mom."
Beside them, Lin Lao’er looked at his elder brother, hesitant to speak, then turned to look out the window. He had meant to talk to his elder brother about what Mr. Lin said that day, but someone interrupted, and he found himself unable to start the conversation thereafter.
At this moment, he thought, does it even matter to spend more time?
The driver of the guard car sensed the heavy atmosphere inside, silently tonguing. This family sure liked looking out the window, probably a genetic trait.
Finally, the car arrived at the rest house under his watchful care. Looking at the tree-lined roads, and occasionally, comrades taking a break on either side, he suddenly wasn’t envious of these high-ranking officials anymore. No matter how laborious his parents were in their village, at least they were healthy and free.
Lin Aiguo surveyed his surroundings, frowned slightly, watched Mr. Lin, who was walking towards the living room with hands behind his back, hesitated for a while, then sped up his steps.
"Dad, if you like staying at the rest house, why not surrender the Big Courtyard?"
Mr. Lin turned around, asking angrily, "Why? Has someone been speaking in front of you? Am I, old and frail, not allowed to stay here and rest?"
Lin Aiguo shook his head silently, "Who would be stupid enough to say it outright? Once the new big courtyard is completed, most will have to move there. Retired comrades will certainly be offered alternative arrangements. Instead of waiting for others to say it, why not make the decision ourselves."
Mr. Lin’s brow furrowed slightly as he waved it off, "I know what to do."
Seeing this, Lin Aiguo said nothing more, headed to the old lady’s door, and knocked.
"It’s inconvenient at the moment; come in later."
Hearing the aunt inside respond, he knew she must be helping the old lady with washing or changing, so he returned to the living room to sit down.
On the other side, Lin Aidang was discussing the return date with Mr. Lin. With the holiday nearing its end, they too had to prepare to depart, though they still didn’t know the outcome of certain matters.
"Let’s leave when the time’s up. About the matter I talked to you about last time, have you decided? Thinking about returning home from the army?"
Lin Aidang shook his head, "I still prefer staying in the unit. What jobs can I find coming back? Better to wait a little longer. Victory and his brother could be transferred back instead."
"Your father-in-law has contacted numerous people, but right now, moving back is improbable. If you want to stay there, that’s fine, but don’t forget to supervise their cultural studies. If they can enter a military academy, that would be ideal."
Lin Aidang smiled and shook his head, "Except for Xiao Hui, none of our family excel in studying. He takes after my sister-in-law."
"Brat."
"It’s how things are. When my kids were in school, which one wasn’t whipped by me for laziness? It’s not that they weren’t diligent; they truly lacked the aptitude."
Mr. Lin scolded, "Enough, do you think it’s something to be proud of?"
He glared at him, quietly lamenting that the boy married a girl from the Old Jiang Family, despite his wife’s strong opposition back then. Alas... children are debts, a never-ending bill.
The door to the old lady’s room opened, and the aunt came out with a basin of dirty clothes, telling Mr. Lin, "Chief, once I finish up here, I’ll set the table; it’ll be quick."
Mr. Lin nodded and replied in a gentle tone, "Alright, take your time, there’s no rush."
Lin Aiguo watched the sweaty aunt come in and out changing water. Once she returned to the room, he quietly suggested to Mr. Lin, "Dad, perhaps we should hire another maid."
Mr. Lin nodded, got up, and headed towards the study, "I’m going to lie down for a while; call me when dinner is ready."
After he left, Lin Aiguo stepped outside, lit a cigarette, and took a few deep puffs. Seeing his brother following behind, he looked up at the sky.
