Chapter 905: The adventures of Ecaterina (2/2)
As the journey went on, she visited the majestic Simhasana Bhavana, a work of art no less grand than the magnificent structures built by the Romans, and gazed upon the Bharatiya Mahasabha, the majestic parliament of the Bharatiya Empire, which left her in awe. The nearly 100-foot idol of the deity Ram, with the everlasting flame of civilisation burning behind him, made her feel the depth of the empire’s rich heritage. She also saw the vast stadium beside the parade grounds, which continued to take her breath away, as its sheer scale and grandeur defied description.
For a while, she also experienced travel in a public transport carriage as she got on with a few school kids her age, who were talking about some interesting things like club activities, interschool competitions, cultural events, and the like. Looking at their laughing faces, she felt a little jealous. She got down at the next stop due to constant insistence from Igor, but she kept looking at the carriage, which was apparently called a school carriage.
She sulked a little and turned back.
"Igor, didn’t I ask you to take me to the civilian area? Why am I seeing all these magnificent structures and buildings? I admit I’m not angry, but... is perhaps the civilian area really not like my father said, so you’re hesitant to take me there?"
"Ugh... You misunderstood, Your Highness. In fact, the place where the palace of the Lord Grand Duke is located is considered to be the outskirts of Bengaluru. The estate purchased by Lord Grand Duke was directly from the Emperor of the Bharatiya Empire, so when we came out of the estate in the morning, the street we actually roamed around was the office district of the city, and the civilian area was on the other side of the office district. So I simply introduced you to every major attraction in the city that was on the way."
"Ohh!" Ekaterina nodded in understanding.
Soon they were in the civilian area, and she had to say her father was really not exaggerating.
The streets, even in the civilian areas, were extremely clean and well-maintained, even when compared with the streets of Moscow. There was no foul odour, no poop thrown around everywhere; there were not even excretions of horses. She almost got confused, thinking whether the animals in the Bharatiya Empire excrete or not. Fortunately, the excretion bag tied to the backs of every work animal made her understand that she was worried for nothing. But even that small detail made her understand how deeply the innovation had seeped into the Bharatiya Empire.
As she walked further, she understood profoundly the prosperity of the Bharatiya Empire. Despite it being the civilian area, she could see bathrooms at every corner of the street, making her understand how seriously the Bharatiyas considered hygiene. The streets were still lined with kerosene street lamps, which were supposed to be only installed in the noble areas, as was in Vladivostok.
The police still patrolled the streets and maintained the traffic like it were in the affluent areas of St. Petersburg. Not to mention, all the houses had their own unique touches; they were all built differently, as if they were a depiction of the kind of people living in them. The colourful drawings on the road in front of each street further added to the charm. If anyone told her that the street she was currently on was a civilian area and not the affluent or the noble area, she would never believe it, but witnessing everything with her own eyes, she was left with no choice but to believe.
On her way, she interacted with a lot of people, as the novelty of being treated like any other foreigner had not gone away. She visited several bakeries and ate extremely delicious and mouth-watering sweets; there was a whole street designated to such stores. The scent emanating from each store made her appetite rile up, and she wanted to contribute to each and every one of them, but thankfully, she still managed to get a hold of herself using all the noble lady training she had gone through.
She eventually went to the shopping district, and she couldn’t be stopped anymore. The clothes, there were so many varieties, the jewellery, handbags, and especially the makeup toolkit, It was simply irresistible, causing Igor a lot of trouble, as he had to carry all the things bought by the princess by himself.
Eventually, Ekaterina made her way into a bookstore. The shopkeeper greeted her and asked what she wanted.
"I haven’t decided yet, please wait a minute," she responded.
She looked around at the various posters that were plastered all over the shop. Bharathi was a language that was included in her comprehensive education, so she could both speak and write in the Bharati language, so she did not have much trouble reading the posters.
"Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavad Gita—these three posters are plastered right in the middle. Are there some new and popular books, mister?" freёnovelkiss-com
The shop owner was immediately taken aback. "Are you a new foreign exchange student, miss?"
"No, why do you ask?"
"It’s nothing, little miss. It’s only the foreign exchange students who have newly arrived in the empire who don’t know about Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavad Gita—the holy books of our faith."
Ekaterina immediately became a little nervous. "Is it like the Holy Book of Christianity and the Holy Book of Islam?" She looked towards Igor for help. She had unknowingly committed a sin of blasphemy, didn’t she?
But she was pleasantly surprised when the shopkeeper didn’t look like he took any offence and shook his head. "Not exactly, but it’s close enough. You can consider it as such."
"Do you want a copy of each, little miss? I can tell from your accent that you are from Russia. We have a Russian copy as well."
Ekaterina hesitated. She was interested in buying a copy, but she did not know how her father would respond, so she ultimately shook her head.
"Is there any novel like Harish Puttar? It doesn’t matter if it is not in Russian. I can understand Bharathi."
The shopkeeper immediately had a very good impression of the little girl and nodded,
"If you are looking for novels, Her Majesty’s work is unavoidable. Since you are already familiar with the Harish Puttar series, have you read the Bahubali series, young miss?"
"I did, but I didn’t like it as much as Harish Puttar. I think I still like the fantasy elements better."
"In that case, you can try Pirates of the Southeast. It has gotten extremely popular lately."
The shop owner took out a book and handed it over. Ekaterina flipped through it roughly, and she felt like it was all right, at least the picture on the front page looked very good.
She paid for the book and was about to leave, but something caught her attention.
"What is that?"
She asked as she pointed at something that was sitting in the corner, with a bunch of Bharathi letters she had never seen on what looked to be keys.
"Oh, that? It’s the new Yadav typewriter."
"My son is interning at a newspaper as an editor, you see. So I ordered it for him. It only came today."
"Can I see it?"
"Sure."
Ekaterina touched the keys, and it made a satisfying click, which for some reason made her very excited.
"Is this used to type letters on paper?"
"Yes. It is said that typewriters have been made mandatory for some important government documents, and it has become a necessity in the media industry as well."
Ekaterina was amazed.
"How does it work, and why are the letters on it completely different from the traditional Bharathi language?"
"Well, its usage is very easy. You simply put the standard paper in the ink and start typing. Every once in a while, this thing comes to the right—you just have to push it back to the left and continue to type until the page or the ink is over. As for why the letters are different, it’s because this typewriter types words in something called simplified Bharathi."
"To represent all combinations of letters in the Bharatiya language would have taken nearly 600 keys, so a simplified Bharati text has been created where any spoken word of the Bharatiya language could be represented in less than 30 keys. Additionally, there are, as you can see, numbers, symbols, space, and enter."
Ekaterina was quickly addicted to the clicking sound.
"Would you sell it to me, or rather, where can I buy it?"
The shop owner immediately hesitated.
"I cannot sell it to you, since, like I said, I bought it for my son. But if you want to buy a new one, you can order it from the Thirumala Printers shop. It’s only a few kilometres from here. You can go to 7th Street, HSR Layout, which should cost you around 3000 Varaha. They should deliver it to your location in utmost a week."
Ekaterina understood and was about to leave, but suddenly an idea came to her mind.
"If I pay you 4000 Varaha, will you part with it?"
The shop owner was immediately stunned, but it didn’t take long for him to agree.
"Sure, let me get the invoice for you so that you can use it to claim the warranty if needed."
Filling the carriage to the brim, she finally returned home, ready to proudly show off everything she had bought to her mother, who had been looking after her little brother.
