Reincarnated as the Baron's son: My Infinite Card Upgrade System-Chapter 120: Alaric’s revival.
"Fall."
Her words, like venom, stripped away their choices.
All three of them suddenly fell to their knees, the ground morphing itself around their limbs to keep them there. No matter how strong they were, they could not defy the earth.
"I can’t move..."
Lucy grunted in vain, every attempt just as useless as the last.
Hina and Kristen were no different. They tried their hardest to release themselves. Alas, they failed too.
Staring at them, Hefrina calmly observed them for a while.
For over 500 years, she had been isolated from both the gods she grew up with and humans.
No one knew why she chose to settle in the human realm, not even the gods themselves.
"You... I remember who you are..." she began, but this time her eyes fixed on Alaric.
Unlike the rest, Alaric was the only one who wasn’t affected by her command.
Standing right before the goddess, he simply blinked, too lifeless to understand the events unfolding around him.
"How long has it been since I’ve seen you? You... look different from what I remembered." Hefrina moved closer, her hand teasing his chin.
"It’s been so long. Your skin still feels the same, but your eyes, on the other hand, look nothing like the Barbetos I know. You are without a soul. What stupid things did you do after your reincarnation?"
"Goddess, please! He has nothing to—"
"Silence." Hefrina gestured with her fingers, and almost instantly, Ava’s mouth was sealed, unable to say anything right after.
The rest did not dare to speak, not after what the goddess had just done to Ava.
While they were afraid, they still wondered: from the way the goddess spoke, did she know Alaric? 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
"You never cease to make me hate you, Barbetos. Honestly, killing the Devourer god to save this stupid world? I don’t get it. Have you grown so attached to humans that you would turn on us, the gods?"
Hefrina sighed.
"I knew you were coming. Satella informed me that your human friends would try to pull something like this. Foolish, are they not? Walking into my domain to plead and beg me to restore your soul."
Hina listened from where she was.
"Humans begging for things they cannot have is something I have come to tolerate all my life, but having Satella beg is something I didn’t expect. She pleaded that I restore your soul.
Not only was that unlike her, she also promised to give me something I’ve been yearning for in exchange. Laughable, she must have fallen in love with you even more than she did before. I’m not bothered, though. I will keep my end of the bargain and restore your soul."
A smile formed on the women’s faces.
Hefrina placed her hand on Alaric’s head, a wild, growing wind beginning to dance around her. Mana began to take part in the chaos, the ground ripping open for red, string-like materials to dance around Alaric.
Suddenly, they began to wrap themselves around Alaric’s body, turning into a cocoon and imprisoning him inside.
Ava hummed loudly, unsure whether Alaric was safe or not. But she didn’t want to take any chances.
Just as she was trying to free herself, Hefrina finally turned her attention to the trio.
A look of disapproval.
"You were the ones Barbetos chose as his disciples. I am disappointed. None of you are strong enough to defeat any god. How do you intend to protect him when you are so useless?" said Hefrina.
Ava frowned, ’Why does she keep calling Lord Alaric Barbetos?’
"I have come to the conclusion that you all are holding him back. This is probably why he hasn’t awakened yet—because he was too busy trying to make humans live comfortable lives. Unacceptable."
Hefrina stretched her hand forward, a huge magic circle constructed in front of her, mana building at the center, ready to be let out.
The trio struggled to free themselves; the more they tried, the more it seemed like the earth was sucking in all their mana.
There was nothing they could do, not when faced with the might of a goddess.
While Kristen was scared out of her mind, panicking to cut herself loose from the ground, Ava and Hina had a different reaction to the situation.
Acceptance.
If they were going to die trying to save Alaric from death, then it was worth it.
Whether the goddess was going to revive Alaric or not was uncertain. As such, the ladies didn’t feel too confident about it.
Living in a world without Alaric didn’t seem like living at all.
They both closed their eyes, waiting patiently for the goddess to kill them.
"When your souls cross my world, I’ll be sure to keep them in a safe room, separate from the others. Weak as you are, you still assisted him during his journey; that amounts to something."
The goddess sighed.
"Now be gone."
As soon as she shot the beam at them, something sped past her, and before she understood what was happening, her beam had been deflected.
"Oh... so you have chosen to show yourselves. And here I thought you were not going to interfere. You, who were summoned by the god of Trinity."
Hefrina uttered.
And true, standing in front of the girls was Laura, her hand smoking after using it to slap the beam attack out of course.
"Indeed," Laura responded, "but you see, my master isn’t going to be happy when he wakes up to see his friends dead."
Ava was shocked to see her.
After Alaric’s death, his three summons went into hiding, only assisting from the shadows.
According to them, they would remain hidden until they died and joined Alaric in the afterlife.
So if Laura had chosen to show herself, that must mean—
Ava shifted her focus to the cocoon Alaric was imprisoned in.
Her eyes lit up as she observed Aurora and Auzure bowing to the cocoon.
And then... it opened up.
One step at a time, Alaric walked out, his hair so long that it became hard to see his face.
But there was no doubt about it.
That was Alaric Montclair.
