Chapter 46: It’s not that easy

Valerie glanced at Damian with a frown, as if restraining herself from crying again. His handsomeness and gentleness reminded her of their harmonious past, and course, she missed that.

"Trust me..." Damian nodded.

Instead, Valerie cried and immediately hugged Damian.

He reciprocated the embrace tightly, smiling as if sensing something good.

"I hate you!" Valerie exclaimed in tears. "Why did you have to have sex with Clara? You ruined our plans!"

"I know... But there’s still plenty of time to fix and realize them... Just give me that chance," Damian said, occasionally kissing Valerie’s forehead.

Valerie released the hug, staring at Damian while sniffling.

"I love you so much," Damian whispered, caressing Valerie’s cheek. "Don’t look at me with hatred again..."

"I can’t... I always hate you, but I also care," replied Valerie, turning her face away.

"Just tell me what you dislike the most about my actions," Damian requested.

Valerie looked at him again. "I hate it when you boast, tease me... I don’t like you opposing me," she said.

"If that’s the case, may I kiss you?" Damian leaned his face towards Valerie.

"No!" Valerie immediately pushed his lips away. "I haven’t even accepted you!"

Damian fell silent with a frown.

"Don’t be too confident... I haven’t made a decision yet. I just feel like I want to be back with you, but I don’t know when," Valerie explained, turning her face away as if avoiding Damian. "Finish your business with your father and... And that girl’s family. I don’t want us to be together amidst others’ disappointment," she continued.

"Her name is Karina," Damian whispered, holding Valerie’s hand. "You don’t need to worry about her... I’ve told her about us, about my feelings... and she understands," he continued.

Valerie furrowed her brow. "What do you mean?"

"She doesn’t mind if our arranged marriage is canceled," Damian said with a smile. "She’ll even help us be together... I mean, meet often without my father suspecting that we’ll reunite."

Valerie fell silent with a bewildered expression.

"For now, she and I will pretend to be learning to love each other, but it’s just a play for our parents to believe that we’re trying to follow their arranged plan. Because if we decide to part now, it will ruin our parents’ friendship and business collaboration... And the worst part is, I’m afraid my father will blame you again. I don’t want that to happen," Damian shook his head, then placed Valerie’s hand on his cheek, enjoying its warmth. "Karina and I have a plan that can bring us back together without any hatred... It will be easy if you give me a chance."

"This is strange... How can she easily accept your decision? Didn’t she like you before?" Valerie asked.

Damian shrugged. "I don’t think so."

"Then why did she accept the arranged marriage before?"

"I don’t know..." Damian shook his head. "I don’t want to get too involved in her private matters. The most important thing now is she accepts my decision and will help us be together. Isn’t that better?" He asked, raising his eyebrows.

Valerie pulled her hand away, Damian’s gaze seemingly making her uncomfortable, haunted by their bitter past, leading her to believe he could get close to Karina due to her kindness.

"She’s kind... She’s willing to sacrifice for our togetherness... Why don’t you just choose her?" she asked, turning her face away.

"Because I only want you."

"But being with me is against your principles... You’ll disappoint everyone."

"I don’t care... What matters is I’m happy, and you too."

Valerie looked at Damian again. "I don’t even know if being with you will bring me happiness... Looking at you always brings back the betrayal!"

Damian stood up, while Valerie hurriedly walked towards the door. He quickly followed, stopping her by hugging her from behind.

"Please... Don’t leave me again!" he pleaded with a soft voice, resting his chin on Valerie’s shoulder.

Valerie furrowed her brow, seemingly disliking Damian’s embrace.

"I can’t be back with you if your issues aren’t resolved..." She released herself, then turned to face him. "Don’t meet me too often... Your father will suspect."

"He won’t suspect... I’ll tell him that I’m meeting you with Karina’s approval. You and Karina will pretend to be friends, we’ll all be close... So my father will think I’m truly committed to her, and he won’t mind me meeting you if he knows that Karina has allowed it," Damian explained.

"How long will this charade last?"

"I don’t know, but we’ll surely tell our parents that we couldn’t learn to love each other. Right now, we act like we’re learning to love because we don’t want to disappoint them... I’ve explained this to you before..."

Valerie bit her lower lip, anxiety showing on her face.

"Please... Even Karina wants to meet you so you can be friends and make it easier for us to meet," Damian said again.

"You’re so confident that she can help us... She must be smart and beautiful. You might fall in love with her while pretending to be in a relationship with her," Valerie replied.

Damian immediately shook his head. "That won’t happen!"

"Now you’re saying that, but over time, you might choose her when I start expecting because of your promises, and then I’ll be hurt again..." Valerie sighed. "It’s hard to trust your loyalty... If you can be tempted by someone bad like Clara, surely you can fall in love with someone even better than her like Karina." She quickly walked towards the door.

Damian sighed, looking tired, but suddenly clenched his fists and caught up with Valerie with quick steps, stopping in front of her until she halted.

"What?" Valerie asked.

"I don’t care whether you’ll believe me again or not, but I’ll show you that I’ll come back to you and leave behind all the obstacles!" Damian replied firmly, his gaze so cold as he cupped Valerie’s cheeks. "Remember... I’m not a foolish man; I won’t fall for the same trap twice!" he continued with determination.

"Prove it without making it difficult for me again," Valerie whispered with a flat gaze. "I don’t want to be part of your charade with that girl... You don’t need to introduce me to her... And I don’t care what you do with her... Having sex with her..."

"No... I won’t do that..." Damian whispered, then kissed Valerie’s lips briefly. "I only want you... I won’t touch anyone else but you and my passion will only rise when I’m with you..."

Valerie immediately pushed Damian away. "I don’t like you like this... You’re like a playboy looking for a new victim," she said, quickly walking away.

Damian let Valerie go, continuing to stare at her with melancholy.

"Nothing can stop me... I don’t even care about your rejection. You’re mine... Forever!"
