This was the first headache Mu Lan had experienced since the car accident. It felt like someone was twisting scissors inside her brain, causing an excruciating pain.
“I’ll take you to the hospital right now, don’t be afraid.”
Huo Tingxiao floored the accelerator, flashing the hazard lights all the way to Shen Zichu’s hospital.
Carrying the groaning Mu Lan in his arms, he entered the hospital’s main entrance. Not far away, Lin Yize had just gotten medicine for Yun Meixian from the window when he looked up and saw Huo Tingxiao bustling about in haste, holding someone in his arms—What had happened to Mu Lan?
...
Clutching the medicine bag, Lin Yize hurriedly followed them.
Shen Zichu had just finished a surgery when he received a call from Huo Tingxiao. He rushed to the emergency room without even changing out of his surgical attire.
“What happened?”
“We were almost ambushed just now. The other party had a car accident. I was about to drive back to Maple Forest Garden, but then she became like this.”
Huo Tingxiao’s face remained calm, but as he spoke, his voice trembled slightly, even betraying a touch of fear.
“It’s okay, it’s okay. I’ve already contacted the best cardiocerebral specialist to see her. Don’t worry, everything will be fine.”
On the hospital bed, Mu Lan painfully clutched at her hair. The pain was constant at first and then became intermittent. Beads of sweat on her forehead slowly joined to form streams, wetting her hair and sticking it to her cheeks.
Huo Tingxiao wanted to stay by her side but was stopped by a nurse outside the room.
“Sorry, could the family members please wait outside and cooperate with our work? Thank you.”
Anxious, he refused to sit on the chairs outside and stood at the door, peering in like a watchful husband.
Watching the doctors perform some simple examinations and Mu Lan responding intermittently, Huo Tingxiao was only allowed in when they arranged for her to undergo a scan.
He picked up Mu Lan and had just stepped out of the door when he saw Lin Yize’s figure. Huo Tingxiao didn’t halt his steps for a moment, brushing past Lin Yize as if he hadn’t seen him.
Lin Yize’s eyebrows furrowed, watching the agonized look on Mu Lan’s face as she leaned against Huo Tingxiao’s chest, feeling utterly helpless.
After reaching the second floor, Huo Tingxiao carefully placed her on the CT scanner bed and gave her one deep look before stepping out.
Outside, Shen Zichu could see his tension and tried to comfort him:
“Don’t worry, we’ll know the cause soon. Once the scans are done, if it still hurts, we’ll give her an injection for the pain. There’s always a solution.”
Huo Tingxiao didn’t respond, only clenching his hand by his side into a fist, his eyes fixedly staring at the closed door of the CT room.
Shen Zichu had never seen him like this before, and felt a jolt in his heart. He knew the relationship between the two had changed after Mu Lan’s memory loss, but he hadn’t realized just how important she had become to Huo Tingxiao.
Mu Lan was in so much pain she couldn’t bear it any longer, her eyelids fluttered shut, and then she plunged into a boundless darkness, oblivious to what happened afterward…
She didn’t know how long she had been unconscious, but when she finally managed to open her eyes, the image before her was blurry and unclear, only hearing someone asking.
“Mu Lan, Mu Lan, can you hear me talking?”
A familiar male voice, like someone she knew.
It took her a while to regain consciousness, and when she finally saw who was in front of her, it was Shen Zichu.
Shen Zichu observed her response, his tone gentle.
“How are you feeling, any discomfort? How do you feel?”
After a while, Mu Lan slowly replied.
“Is this the hospital? What happened? Where is Huo Tingxiao? Where is he? Is he… is he alright?”
As she spoke, she struggled to get up, but as soon as she moved, Mu Lan immediately furrowed her brow, feeling as though her head was being struck by a lethal weapon.
“Don’t rush, Tingxiao is fine. He’s discussing your condition with the specialists. He’ll be here soon.”
Mu Lan leaned against the headboard, gently closing her eyes.
Shen Zichu sat on a chair next to the bed, his heart still up and down, pursing his lips before he spoke up.
“Besides the headache, do you feel anything else… unusual?”
What he really wanted to ask was whether there were any signs of her regaining her memory.
Mu Lan let out a deep sigh of relief.
“I just have a headache, no other feelings. I…”
The door of the ward was suddenly pushed open. Both thought it would be Huo Tingxiao, but to their surprise, it turned out to be the unexpected visitor, Lin Yize.
Disappointment darkened Mu Lan’s eyes, making Lin Yize feel somewhat uncomfortable.
“What are you doing here?”
Shen Zichu was glaring and puffing with irritation, not understanding what was going on and why he found this Mr. Lin so displeasing to look at.
Ignoring Shen Zichu’s overly obvious hostility, Lin Yize asked gently.
“Mu Lan, are you alright?”
“Senior? Why are you here?”
“I came to get medicine for my mother and coincidentally saw Huo Tingxiao carrying you to the emergency room.
I was worried, so I wanted to wait until you woke up to pay a visit.”
Mu Lan was taken aback, not expecting that Lin Yize had been waiting for her until now.
“I’m fine, thank you for your concern, Senior.”
“What’s the meaning of this, President Lin? Afraid that our medical skills aren’t up to par, so you eagerly come to supervise?”
Shen Zichu spoke with sarcasm, but Lin Yize responded with laughter instead of anger:
“Dr. Shen is really humorous; I’m just worried about Mu Lan, that’s all.”
Those words made Shen Zichu purse his lips, thinking to himself, is it your place to worry?
“Well, you’ve seen her now, so please don’t disturb the patient’s rest. It’s getting late; take care on your way out.”
“Shen Zichu!”
Mu Lan was already feeling unwell, and her patience was running thin. Shen Zichu was acting like a petulant child, insisting on causing a scene—couldn’t he give her a moment’s peace?
“What, you think I’m being too noisy? I—”
Just at that moment, a nurse came in with a cart, ready to send Shen Zichu away.
“Dr. Shen, Director Gu wants you in the consultation room.”
Lin Yize’s lips curved slightly, it seemed even the heavens were aiding him.
“Hmph, you’d better behave yourself, this is my turf.”
Before leaving, Shen Zichu couldn’t resist warning Lin Yize; he huffed and walked out reluctantly.
The nurse didn’t understand the relationship between these people, she simply followed protocol in administering the IV drip to Mu Lan. The head nurse had already ordered that the patient in this VIP ward was to be given special care. They were not to be neglected, nor too curious, just do their duty.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. You’ve just awoken and it’s not suitable for you to have visitors, so…”
Lin Yize clearly understood that this was an eviction aimed at him. A smile played at the corner of his mouth as he spoke with a gentle tone.
“I’ll just sit for a while; it won’t be long, thank you for your trouble.”
This tactic never failed to work on the young nurses, and sure enough, the nurse blushed and left the room.
Now only the two of them remained in the ward. Lin Yize skipped the small talk and went straight to the point.
“Meilan has shut down, Xie Bin’s leg got broken; do you know that?”
Mu Lan was startled and looked up at Lin Yize.
Seeing she wasn’t speaking, Lin Yize walked over and sat in the chair beside the bed.
“Mu Lan, you’re so smart, you must know who did it, right?”
