Chapter 40 -36: Warm Arms

“Skin and bones, no feeling at all, why would anyone find pleasure in this!”

Qing’er prepared to kick with one leg, only to realize her foot was in pain, so she quickly stopped.

Ye Chen let go of his tight grip on Yu Qing, allowing her to slowly get up.

Ye Chen explained, “I was just afraid you wouldn’t be able to stand, that’s all.”

“I think you were taking advantage of the situation,” Yu Qing said.

“I can’t believe you would say that. I just saved your life! I certainly wasn’t thinking about anything else.”

“Who knows what you were thinking.”

“Fine, I’m a big bad guy, you better stay alert.”

“Hehe, so now you know. I knew long ago you were no good.”

Ye Chen continued to wander off to the other side.

“Even making snake wine especially for men, you sure know a lot!”

Ye Chen laughed and said, “Indeed, all the women in the village do that, it’s no secret.”

“Hehe, instead of learning something useful, you listen to all sorts of nonsense,” Yu Qing said.

After that bump, the path was indeed much smoother. It didn’t take them long to cross the cliff, and upfront appeared a small sloping arch. They smoothly passed through. Ye Chen finally breathed a sigh of relief.

The cliff was now far behind them.

Yu Qing felt like she had just emerged from a nightmare, collapsing on the ground, her heart still pounding.

The sun had just risen, and a ray of sunlight cast on Yu Qing’s sweat-soaked face.

“This adventure will definitely be unforgettable for you,” Ye Chen said.

Yu Qing got up, looked around to see if there were any other figures.

Ye Chen said, “If we hurry, we could still make it back to Immortal City for breakfast.”

“We need to let them know we’re alive, we can’t let them worry anymore.”

Ye Chen nodded, stood up but found nothing. He said, “Let’s go. We’ll figure it out after we’re out of here.”

Yu Qing also struggled to stand up, swaying uneasily.

Ye Chen said, “Hey, I’ll carry you.”

“No need.”

“What’s the big deal? You’re limping along. If you twist your other ankle, you’ll have to be carried to and from the bathroom tonight.”

A slap was swung fiercely, Ye Chen quickly dodged.

“Okay, no more jokes. Your foot has gotten a little better, but hiking is rough. Don’t put too much pressure on your other foot. Get on my back now. My shoulders are strong. You’re lucky, clumsy woman.”

“You’re the clumsy one!” Yu Qing climbed onto his back, pursing her lips.

“You’re quite heavy. I bet you’re heavier than me.”

Another slap came down, landing on his other shoulder.

“Hey, I suggest you stop. If we end up rolling down the hill, we’ll be inseparable,” Ye Chen said.

“Who want to be inseparable with you, country bumpkin.”

With Yu Qing on his back, Ye Chen began to navigate through the dense forest, looking for a way down the mountain. Only when they found the path, descending would be easier.

They began to shuttle through the dense foliage. The fog was still thick, especially on the hillside, where a thick layer of fog hung, impossible to disperse. The dew was heavy, and soon Ye Chen’s pants were completely wet. They pushed through the undergrowth, only moving forwards.

Suddenly, Qing’er nudged Ye Chen. It seemed like she saw someone standing on the hill. Ye Chen stopped.

Yu Qing shouted, “We’re coming down.”

Ye Chen echoed the shout. His voice was obviously louder than Yu Qing’s. It was very quiet in the mountains, so even though their shouts were small, they could be heard by the person on top of the hill.

Yu Qing said, “I think he heard us.”

“Yeah, he probably did.”

“Should we wait for them?”

“No, let’s not wait. As long as they know, we should head down.” Ye Chen found the small path down the mountain. Carrying Yu Qing, he didn’t look back and continued to descend.

Yu Qing took a glance back and put her hands on his shoulders. Suddenly she remembered something from a long time ago. She couldn’t recall when it was exactly.

Back then, she rode on her father’s shoulders the same way, his strong arms carrying her around as she laughed. Happiness echoed all around. She had forgotten so many details of those days. Now, they felt both distant and familiar.

Now, she couldn’t remember when was the last time she spoke with her father. She was afraid to think about the next time, or if there would be a next time. She couldn’t control it and tears welled up in her eyes, her mind a whirl of thoughts.

“Does your foot still hurt?” Ye Chen’s voice broke her reverie.

With a sniffle, a tear trickled down her cheek and landed on Ye Chen’s face. Ye Chen looked up and said, “Is it going to rain?”

Looking around, Yu Qing quickly wiped away her tear. Then Ye Chen realized, it wasn’t about to rain, she was crying. He didn’t know what happened and asked, “You’re not crying because you’re moved that I saved you, are you? You don’t have to be so polite, offering your body in return would suffice.”

At this moment, Yu Qing realized, he was not her father.

“You really are crying.” Ye Chen was slightly confounded and said, “It was nothing, just a helping hand. Anyone in my position would have done the same. Don’t get emotional.”

“I remembered my father.”

“Did I remind you of your father?”

“When I was younger, I used to ride on my father’s back like this too, as he took me around to play.”

“Really? Am I as old as your dad?” Ye Chen responded in a playful tone.

“But that’s all in the past. Now I often don’t see my father for months. Even when he comes back, I may not get to see him. And even if I do, we hardly exchange a few words. I can’t remember the last time we had a meal together. My birth mother died early, so I’m alone most of the time, with maybe just one or two handmaids for company.”

“Do you also have an evil stepmother who opposes you?” Ye Chen asked knowingly.

Yu Qing replied, “My stepmother’s name is Xia Yue. She was with my father before my real mother. My birth mother was rescued from bandits by my father, and then I was born. My stepmother resents my mother, but since my mother is dead, she turns her hatred towards me. I can understand though. Someone has to bear the brunt.”

“Does she hit you?”

“No, not really. But she insults me quite often. The words are very unkind and hurtful. Every time she’s angry, if I’m around, she takes it out on me. Slowly it’s become a habit.”

“Does she call you a witch, saying like mother like daughter, or labelling you as bad luck? But you do look a bit like a witch. How else could you be so enchanting and saliva-inducing?”

Yu Qing pinched Ye Chen’s arm tightly, the pain almost making him yelp.

“Just ignore her as much as possible,” Ye Chen advised.

“I wish I could. Oftentimes, it’s not as if you want to ignore, you could manage to do so. A rabid dog biting people doesn’t care about the reasons,” Yu Qing said.

“So, you came to Immortal City for some peace and quiet?”

“You could say that.”

“Doesn’t your father help when she insults you?”

“There’s not much he can do. He’s usually not around Immortal City, he’s mostly travelling.”

“Then it’s best if you avoid your stepmother, don’t let her beat you to death.”

Yu Qing fell silent.

“I didn’t realize you had such a background.

Seems like I’m better off. Though I’ve never met my father, and my mother is strict with me, I know she loves me.”

Upon hearing this, Yu Qing calmly replied, “I just hope to grow up fast.”

“So growing up fast means you can escape from there?”

“Maybe.”

“Perhaps growing up brings problems of its own. We may always be living in troubles. Life is like a pit, you jump out of one only to encounter another bunch waiting; there are pits all around. The question is not whether you can jump out of the pit, but how you live in it.”

“Who gave you this crooked reasoning?”

“There’s an old farmer in our village. He sometimes herds cattle with the kids. I picked up these sayings from him.”

“Life is just a pit. It doesn’t matter if you can get out, it depends on how you live in it.” Yu Qing repeated, nodding slightly, thinking there’s some truth in that.

“So you agree that he makes sense?”

Yu Qing nodded.

“Quit crying, the bad times will pass, better times will come,” Ye Chen comforted.

Both of them, as if on cue, seemed to get a lot closer.

“If something bothers you, you can come to me, I’ll cheer you up,” Ye Chen offered.

“Come to you? What can you do for me?” Yu Qing asked.

“Although I might not be able to help, I can lend an ear to

your grievances, and you can share your innermost thoughts with me.”

“Then you would know everything about me.”

“Hey, it’s not like it’s any secret. Even if you don’t share now, I already know quite a lot,” Ye Chen responded.

Yu Qing gave a cold smile.

“Don’t worry, I’ll keep it confidential.”

“Only a fool would believe you.”

“Do you think I’ll share your stuff with Zhan Ze! No way. I said I won’t tell, and I won’t. I have my own principles,” Ye Chen asserted.

Yu Qing gave another cold smile.

“Everything will be fine, I believe the future is bright.”

On top of the mountain, Su Hong was getting ready. He had found the place they were looking for and his disciples were eating, preparing to set out once they finished their meal.

Just then, a disciple ran back shouting, “I’ve seen them; they’ve reached halfway up the mountain, both of them.”

The moment Zhan Ze heard this, he dropped his food and without another word, rushed up to the hilltop; others followed, thinking that the guy was bluffing.

Zhan Ze and Shi Zi ran over.

At that moment, Ye Chen was carrying Yu Qing on his back, moving down the mountain.

In the dense forest, Hao Tian saw them and yelled “Ye Chen!”.

Ye Chen stopped, turned around, and took a look; Yu Qing also turned back and responded.

Shi Zi remarked, “Yu Qing seems to be injured.”

“Yes, she must be or why else would Ye Chen carry her?” Hao Tian replied.

They all speculated about what could have happened, especially Zhan Ze. Why in the world was Ye Chen carrying Yu Qing on his back…?

Could it be envy? Or jealousy?
