Chapter 414: Engagement chaos (3)

Chow Mey sniffled. "He just had some wine...But we still have the glass! He had kept it in the used glasses section!"

As it turned out, the glasses were yet to be sent for washing so it was a perfect chance for Mingshen to intervene.

"Great. Shilin."

"Yes, Boss."

"Send all those glasses for testing. We’ll find out which glass is laced with poison."

Hou Huan’s gaze darkened. "Dr. Yang. Please refrain from creating unnecessary chaos tonight. This is my son’s engagement ceremony. I won’t allow anybody to ruin it."

Jia’s eyes narrowed. "Mrs. Hou. A healthy guest has collapsed in your house and potentially poisoned. The party is inconsequential at this moment."

"It’s just a misunderstanding," her tone grew severe. "How do we know that he couldn’t be sick from before?"

Chow Mey bit her lip. "What do you mean he was sick? He wasn’t sick at all! Until just a few hours ago, we did our shooting and he was all okay! Even when we left together to come here, he was still fine!"

"Yes, yes, he was fine! I attest to that!"

And so arrived Yang Bingqing, flipping her hairlocks back in style.

"I had talked to him just a few minutes before and he was fine. How dare you insinuate otherwise? I’m Bai Caishen’s biggest fan," her nostrils flared. "I even took his autograph!"

The guests - "..."

Yang Bingqing from the great Yang family is obsessed with a drama actor? And even took his autograph?

She then pointed her finger at Hou Tengqi. "I know why you did this. You are jealous of Bai Caishen!"

Mingshen rolled his eyes.

Well guess Mom’s dream of acting on a stage finally came to fruition. But isn’t she being too dramatic?

His expression worsened. "Mrs. Yang. You might be his fan but there is a limit to telling lies!"

She sneered. "Lies? It’s your face that’s lying. It leaks of jealousy. You were always uncomfortable with his friendship with Meng Rin. You didn’t even want him to be here but were forced to accept Meng Rin’s choices! I cannot believe you could go so far as poisoning a man!"

The guests murmured among themselves, especially the ones who were physically closer during the heated exchange between them.

"Mr. Hou did seem a little agitated while talking to Mr. Bai."

"Mr. Bai was very calm on the other hand."

Hou Tengqi’s veins popped on his temple. "You dare slander me like this in front of everybody? Do you think you can get away with it just because you are a Yang?"

Yang Bingqing tossed her hair again with a scoff. "I don’t need the Yang name to speak the truth! Your own face exposes you. You were practically growling whenever Bai Caishen smiled at Meng Rin. Hmph, you couldn’t control your inferiority complex!"

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Meng Rin, pale and trembling, pressed her fingers together. "That’s...that’s not..."

But Hou Tengqi cut her off, snarling, "Shut up! You think I would poison some second-rate actor because I was jealous? Don’t be ridiculous! He is nothing compared to me!"

Yang Bingqing folded her arms, eyes glinting like daggers. "Then explain why the man you despise is the only one lying unconscious while the rest of us are perfectly fine."

Shilin, who had been quietly collecting the glasses, now had half a tray balanced in his hands. "Boss, I’ll send these right away."

Hou Huan stepped in front of him. "Stop right there! Nobody is taking anything from my household without my permission."

Mingshen’s lips curled in amusement. "Why? Do you admit there is evidence worth protecting? Thank you, Mrs. Hou. That simplifies my work."

Her jaw clenched. "Don’t twist my words, Dr. Yang!"

Jia stepped forward. "If you obstruct an investigation while a guest lies poisoned under your roof, the police will be very interested. Do you really want this engagement remembered for a criminal cover-up?"

"Yes, my dear Jia! Tell them! He poisoned Bai Caishen because he couldn’t tolerate his closeness with Meng Rin. Huhu, poor her. I had seen her crying all alone in the room before the party started..."

The atmosphere tightened, heavy with tension. Guests exchanged uneasy glances.

"What do you mean crying?" Hou Delan intervened. "She was fine. I was with her the whole time."

Her eyes narrowed. "But you weren’t at the time when your younger brother-in-law was shamelessly barging in her space and hitting on her."

Hou Tengqi froze and so did his mother.

"I was there when it happened. I had to practically drag him away from Meng Rin! Even though she is going to marry his brother, he was shamelessly eyeing her like some hungry beast. Poor Meng Rin was so terrified...!"

Jia’s head jerked towards. "Is this true? Did he harass you?"

Meng Rin’s hands trembled. She looked up at Yang Bingqing once and saw a faint but reassuring smile in them. As the crowd’s stupefied gazes landed on hers, who were too stunned to absorb this news, she had a decision to make.

’You want this to be over, don’t you?’ Yang Bingqing held her hand and asked just after she drove Hou Jielun away.

’Then side with us tonight. This is your chance to escape the Hou family for good.’

"It’s...it’s..." Meng Rin trembled, "true..."

"Poor you! Just look how trembling she is! She had to put on a brave face just to keep the Hou family’s respect but she had been silently suffering!" She sniffled.

Hou Huan threw a severe gaze at her son as if saying - ’Make her stop before this gets escalated.’

But it seemed like Hou Tengqi was in another zone altogether and couldn’t hear her words.

Touch her...? Jielun touched her...?

Before he could absorb the sudden bomb dropped upon him, a punch came flying to his cheek. He staggered backward and held his cheek, feeling completely silent in his head.

Then he slowly looked up in a daze. He looked further up to meet the vicious eyes of a man he had met before during the charity function.

"You...You tried to kill my brother...?" Bai Yingtai said, albeit dangerously close to dozing off.
