Chapter 82: The next queen (2)

"Prince Tobias!" Helena called, running to try to catch up to Tobias.

"My Lady! It is inappropriate for you to chase after the prince and make noise in the palace. Should anyone see you, you’d be scolded."

Helena stopped upon hearing the maid. She inspected the area to see if anyone was around to witness her chasing after Tobias. "I only want to clear up the misunderstanding. I was only trying to pass a message along to my sister."

Helena didn’t understand why she was always made to be the bad guy. She wasn’t trying to ruin Hazel’s relationship. Her way of making the prince regret not picking her had nothing to do with Hazel.

Helena bit her lip to refrain from calling out to Tobias again. She didn’t regret mentioning David because Hazel would come across him at some point and there would be a misunderstanding about being around him.

"That’s the last time I try to help anyone," Helena muttered.

If David’s presence in the palace caused misunderstandings for Hazel, then so be it. The prince didn’t want to hear that they were just friends.

"She’s going to be queen," Helena said, letting it all set in.

She had been hearing the maids speaking to each other about Tobias and Hazel. About some private dinner they had and how the prince would stay near Hazel when he was participating in the selection. freewebnσvel.cѳm

Helena could not understand how Hazel had put in the least effort, avoided the prince, but still managed to get the queen’s seat. Part of Helena was excited for her sister, but the other part didn’t like this because she had worked hard all for nothing.

Once again she’ll be hearing about Hazel succeeding and unless she married soon after, everyone will be trying to comfort her. Helena didn’t need anyone trying to comfort her. Because of this, Helena was trying her best to find a man with a status she could wed.

She no longer cared for the prince. It was losing the chance to become queen that she cared for. Her dream of living in the palace was crushed. Luckily, the queen had found her a good man who just might help her frequent the palace often without needing an invitation from Hazel to visit.

"I am finished with my walk. I am going back to my room now," Helena said, turning on her heels to leave.

The prince was already gone so there was no reason to stay here and she didn’t want to speak to her father today. She needed a little bit more space from her parents. Tomorrow would be the first time in seven days that her family would all be together to have a conversation.

Helena couldn’t wait for that time to come.

The next day, the palace seemed to be in chaos as it was the end of the selection for the second group. There was a small ball to be held for the parents to return to get their children and a few nobles were invited as it was a special occasion.

The kingdom was getting closer to knowing which young woman would become the future queen.

"Are you nervous?" Linda asked Hazel. She was already dressed and left her room to help Hazel as most of the attention would be on her friend.

"No. Should I be?" Hazel questioned, looking up at Linda from the chair she sat on.

"The prince is going to pick you. It would have to be some crazy twist that he didn’t. Like if this was all one big plot to lead you on since he wasn’t over you turning him down and-"

"Linda, you are now making me nervous. Please stop," Hazel said as Linda was filling her head with all kinds of thoughts she didn’t like. "Tobias wouldn’t do that."

Linda smiled because of the difference with Hazel when it came to Tobias. "At the start of the selection, you believed that he would. Can I just say that I am thrilled for you to become queen? I know, I know. You are waiting for it all to be true and announced before you get excited, but I will get excited for you."

"You will be the queen because the prince is so in love with you," Linda said, dancing as she couldn’t contain her excitement.

"What are you doing?" Hazel asked, taken aback by the movement Linda did.

"Dancing. Why?" Linda asked.

"Oh. Never mind," Hazel replied, turning back to her mirror. "What will you do if your name is called for you to stay in the palace?"

"Do not say that Hazel!" Linda whined, not wanting anyone to bring up this idea. She was ready to get out of the palace so she could court Edgar as she wanted. "I might get my father, brothers, and grandfather to get me out of here."

Hazel knew that they would answer her plea to get out of the palace. None of them wanted Hazel to get married. She was the only girl in the house aside from her mother of course so she was treated no different to the princess.

"I will try to find my way into the palace as much as I can. If anyone troubles you, tell me the names so I can get my father and grandfather to deal with them. We’ll show them that the Hensons are protecting you," Linda declared.

"How kind of you," Hazel said, appreciative of Linda’s offer. No doubt should she ever need any help Linda would help her. She could believe all of Linda’s promises. "I will try to repay your kindness shortly. Just don’t expect me to be able to do miracles and get Edgar to marry you."

"I don’t expect you to do it. I expect your husband to help," Linda said, standing up to look at Hazel’s appearance. "It is good that you are wearing your hair down so the crown could-"

"Go away," Hazel replied, shooing Linda from by her side. "There won’t be a crown going on my head today. Not until I marry and Tobias becomes king."

"Ha!" Linda yelled, pointing her finger at Hazel. "You do know that you will become queen. Tell me, have you fallen deeply in love with the prince? You must because of the way you almost broke my hand to snatch the petal out of it."

"I didn’t want you to ruin it. I only received one and there’s no telling when I can go back to the garden. My feelings for Tobias are of my concern. I cannot tell you because you don’t know how to hide your excitement sometimes. It is time for us to go so we are not late. I am ready to see my parents again," Hazel said, getting up from her chair.

Hazel had enjoyed her time in the palace better than she thought she would when she first came here. Though the girls became jealous of her relationship with Tobias and tried to spread rumours or play pranks, Hazel could put up with it as the head maid was around to stop most of their pranks.

Hazel looked forward to reuniting with her parents and seeing what would happen by the end of the day.
