Chapter 83: The next queen (3)

Hazel and Linda exited the room and joined the other ladies walking with their maids toward the ballroom.

Leaving early to arrive at the ball, they would get the chance to speak with their families if they were to also arrive early. The queen had already permitted them to do so as the rule to not speak with relatives was now over.

Nothing could be done to change the outcome of today right now.

Hazel looked around as she walked, trying to find her mother or father. There was much she had to tell them about her time in the palace and she wanted to stop any worrying they had about how she was fairing here.

As they entered the ballroom, the other young ladies spotted their families and walked away from the group to greet them.

"Oh, my family is there. Do you want to join me while you wait for your family to arrive?" Linda asked as they could all stand together when the Wallace’s came.

Hazel looked across the room at Linda’s family. Her grandfather, mother, father, and one of her brothers were here for her. "No. You’ll have a lot to talk about so you can go on without me. Knowing my mother, she will be here soon."

"If you change your mind, come over right away. My mother will want to know what your time in the selection was like. Keep your eyes on me in case I need your help escaping my family," Linda requested and then left Hazel’s side to go to her family.

Hazel shook her head at Linda. She had a crazy family, but Hazel still loved their craziness.

Hazel got out of the way to find a quiet corner to stand while she waited for her parents to come.

"Hazel!" Helena called to her sister. "Where are you going?"

Hazel turned around to look at Helena. They had not seen each other in four days. Well, Hazel had not spotted Helena since the day the queen sat them down with Tobias. She didn’t know if Helena had ever seen her since then, but did not come to greet her.

"I was going to find a corner to get out of the way. Mother and father are not here yet," Hazel answered, feeling awkward even though she was speaking to her sister. She didn’t like this feeling since they were sisters, but it couldn’t be helped since their relationship had become strange. "Were you well in the queen’s care?"

"Of course! She gave me a maid and a guard of my own. I am going to request that father give me my own guard and maid. I like always having someone by my side. You didn’t go with the dress we picked out to wear today," Helena said, inspecting the yellow dress.

They were to wear pink so they would match. Helena was the only one to follow the plan.

"I thought this one was more suited for today. Mother did say it was the best one to wear today. I should have listened to her from the beginning," Hazel replied, looking down at the yellow dress.

"It was a good choice for you. It matches the Castro’s royal colours," Helena said, finding Hazel to be already playing into becoming queen. She’d be matching the Castro’s today if they were wearing yellow. "Will we be fine? This won’t go on forever right?"

"That depends on you," Hazel answered. She was not the one acting a fool these days.

Helena frowned as she was confused by Hazel making it seem like she was the only one to have a hand in their relationship turning sour. "We both had a role to play in our relationship being ruined."

"I would love to know what my role was," Hazel replied, curious about what she had done wrong. If there was something that she missed, she would gladly apologise.

Sometimes you weren’t aware of how your actions came off to others.

"Well, you..." Helena paused as she couldn’t think of anything more other than the fact Hazel had stolen from her dream to become queen.

She already knew that Hazel wasn’t the one to reveal that she had danced with the prince. Hazel was planning to keep that a secret, but it was Jasmine who overheard them talking the night Tobias brought Hazel back from dinner.

Hazel didn’t need to hear anything more from Helena as it was evident in Helena’s silence that she had not done anything. This was all about Tobias and becoming queen. That was something out of Hazel’s control. "It would help if we don’t talk about the palace for a while. You are my sister and I don’t want to be so awkward around you."

Hazel didn’t want to fight with Helena any longer as it would just upset their mother. They should both try not to worry their mother. It would then lead to their father being angry.

Helena found it to be a hard request to follow since they were still in the palace and knew what was going to happen today. Since Hazel didn’t want to find her role in their relationship not being good now, Helena was going to move on to show that she was not childish. "I will do that," Helena agreed.

"Good," Hazel said followed by silence after.

"Girls!" Renee called, unknowingly saving the two from the silence. She was happy to see them standing by each other, talking calmly.

Renee didn’t care who was watching as she walked up to her daughters and hugged them. "I could just hug you two forever. Are you alright?"

"Aside from you somewhat choking us, yes," Hazel answered, enduring her mother’s strong hug. "Now is not the time to kill our mother."

"Oh stop it, Hazel. Let me hug you as I want. I had to go seven days without being near my girls. The house was lonely without the two of you around. Then your father was busy," Renee said, letting go of them before she ruined their appearance. "Tell me, who messed with you?"

"Alright dear," Nathan said, stepping in before his wife could go off to try beating up anyone who gave their daughters a hard time. "We should save that for last so I can have the carriage ready for us to get away. We can’t start a fight now to embarrass the two and interfere with what might happen today."

"I will drop it for now, but you two must tell me. I can’t be friends with mothers of daughters who tried to pick on my daughters," Renee said, looking around the room. She noticed that as the young ladies spoke, their parents were looking this way. "Don’t pay them any mind." ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

"I have been following your advice since I got here, mother. I have missed you," Hazel said, touching her hair to check if it was now out of place because of her mother’s hug.

"So did I," said Helena.

"It’s good to hear that the two of you didn’t grow up so much that you didn’t miss your mother. I am hoping for the best for you today," Renee said to Hazel. She didn’t want to cheer on Hazel at first because of Helena, but now that she was here, Renee changed her mind.

"Announcing the royal family!"

Hazel looked away from her family to the entrance of the room to watch as the queen, king, prince, and maybe the princess would enter. Now that they were here, this gathering could now officially start.

Despite knowing how the day would end, Hazel couldn’t help feeling nervous. It didn’t help that as Tobias walked to the right of his father and looked at her since she was still close to the door he smiled, but it wasn’t just any smile. It was a smile that meant he was up to something.

She knew it all to well after being near him for seven days.
