Too Late to Love Her: When She Divorced, He Fell Apart-Chapter 61: Are You with Another Man?
Sean threatened her, demanding that she persuade Jade to leave Tristan Lockwood unharmed.
Yet Tristan Lockwood wanted to protect Jade, preventing her from doing anything that might harm her.
If she defied them, the only thing she cared about — the firm — would be in jeopardy again.
Claire Hale really didn’t know what to do.
When she put her hands in her pockets for warmth, she found a note.
On it was a string of unfamiliar phone numbers.
She was momentarily stunned.
After recalling carefully, she searched the number on WeChat.
Then she clicked to add.
The other side agreed quickly.
Immediately a message came: "Sister, my name is Dylan Skinner."
She replied with a simple "Hmm."
From Dylan’s end, it showed that the other party was typing.
After a while, he sent four words: "Sister, would you like to meet?"
In the cold wind, Claire Hale sent him the address of a five-star hotel.
...
Claire Hale had just checked into the hotel when there was a knock on the door.
She opened the door, and there stood Dylan Skinner, his nose red from the cold, smiling brightly at her.
Previously, in the dim light of the bar, she hadn’t paid close attention to him.
Only now did she notice he was dressed in simple cotton jackets and jeans with cheap sneakers.
"Are you a rich lady, sister?"
Dylan glanced around the room.
A five-star hotel and a luxury suite, it was not a price he could afford for a night.
"How much do you charge?"
Claire Hale suddenly asked.
Dylan was taken aback before he realized what she meant.
Then he held up five fingers: "Five thousand, I guess."
Claire Hale frowned slightly.
Dylan: "Too expensive? I can negotiate."
"I’ll give you ten thousand."
Claire Hale’s gaze landed on the wine cabinet.
"Go pour some wine first."
"Okay."
Dylan obediently took a bottle of red wine from the cabinet, and seeing him pour it directly, Claire Hale reminded him: "Let it breathe first."
Dylan paused awkwardly and nodded, "Oh, right."
When he finally brought the wine to Claire Hale, she said again: "You’re not actually in this business, are you?"
Dylan blushed slightly, "I wasn’t before, but after tonight with you, I guess I’m in the trade now."
Claire Hale tilted her head and stared at him.
Dylan felt uneasy under her gaze and asked: "What is it?"
"How old are you?"
Dylan replied nervously: "Age doesn’t matter in this regard. I promise the service will be satisfactory."
Claire Hale smirked, "Just chatting with me tonight is fine."
"Oh."
Dylan obediently sat next to her and asked: "What do you want to talk about, sister?"
"Can you like me?"
Claire Hale suddenly asked.
Dylan was stunned, his expression a bit bewildered.
Perhaps not understanding, she asked with such meaning.
"Or...you can make me fall in love with you." Claire Hale wrapped her arms around her knees, curling up on the sofa, "I don’t quite understand what it truly means to love someone and to be truly loved by someone."
She never understood why no matter what she did, Tristan Lockwood would eventually distance himself from her.
No one ever taught her how to express her love properly, nor did anyone tell her what to do when you love someone who doesn’t love you back.
She thought love was simply being by someone’s side.
Even if it meant being covered in scars, hurting each other.
So in the end, she was left with no other choice but to trick him into bed and force him to marry her.
That way, he could always be with her.
But with Jade Sutton’s appearance, she didn’t even need to do anything to get Tristan Lockwood.
Were those hundreds of old letters really more important than all the years she and Tristan had spent together?
Dylan didn’t expect such a strong and poised woman before him to ask such vulnerable questions.
Her cold eyes were tinged with desperation.
Unconsciously, Dylan reached out and hugged Claire Hale.
He said: "If you don’t mind, sister, I can like you."
Claire Hale didn’t reject him, only said: "I’ll give you money."
Dylan stiffened: "You don’t need to, I..."
"Aren’t you short of money?"
He let go of her, his expression a bit embarrassed: "How did you know..."
She was older and more experienced than him, naturally seeing that he had no choice but to get into this line of work.
"My mom has a tumor, it’s malignant, and the doctor said she needs surgery soon. But my family can’t afford the expenses, so I had to come out and do this."
Dylan said in a low voice.
Claire Hale’s eyelids fluttered, and she asked: "Are you and your mom close?"
Dylan nodded: "I don’t have a dad; my mom raised me on her own. She’s my only family."
"What about your dad?"
"My mom said that after my dad got together with her, he left. Later, when she looked for him, she found he already had a family. But by then, she was seven months pregnant with me and could only have me."
Dylan propped his chin on his hand, his birth circumstances were unfortunate, yet there wasn’t a hint of shame on his face.
Even when talking about his mother, he smiled warmly.
Only a child who has been loved can have that kind of smile.
"Your mother loves you a lot."
Claire Hale said softly.
Unlike her mother.
Her mother was ashamed to have given birth to her and only wanted to take her life.
"Yes, that’s why I’ll fight with my life to cure my mom’s illness."
"How much does your mother’s surgery cost?"
Dylan was taken aback, pursed his lips, and didn’t speak.
Claire Hale took a card from her bag and gave it to him.
"The money on this card should cover your surgery expenses."
Dylan didn’t take it: "Sister, you’ve already paid for our conversation tonight, I can’t take more."
"Then what about your mom’s illness?"
He pressed his lips together tightly: "I’ll find another way."
"What if you delay treatment because time runs out?"
Claire Hale shoved the card into his hand.
"Consider this a loan; pay me back later."
Dylan clutched the card, his eyes glinting: "Alright, I’ll definitely pay you back, sister. Is there anything I can do for you now?"
"Just be good to me."
She paused and then added a sentence:
"Like a boyfriend would."
In the middle of the night, Claire Hale fell asleep directly in the hotel.
Dylan slept on the sofa.
In the morning, Claire Hale was awakened by the ringing of her phone.
She glanced down and saw that it was Tristan Lockwood calling.
She pressed to receive and lazily said hello.
"You didn’t come home all night."
Tristan Lockwood’s cold tone came through, and Claire Hale nonchalantly curled her lips: "Didn’t you go with Jade Sutton, too?"
"Where are you now?"
"Sister, are you awake?"
A young male voice came from the receiver and Tristan Lockwood paused before his voice immediately sank: "You’re with another man?"
Claire Hale said lazily: "You can be with Jade Sutton; I can naturally find another man. We’ll each mind our own business."
After saying this, she hung up.
Looking up, she found Dylan curiously watching her, and he asked: "Sister, is that your boyfriend?"
"No."
"Oh..."
"He’s my husband."
"Huh?"
