Chapter 48: Chapter 48:Orientation [2]

Standing amidst the three dead djinn bodies and facing the unknown female figure, I was at a loss for words.

Perhaps sensing my confusion, the female figure strolled toward me, swinging the revolver in a vertical circle with a single finger.

Letting out an exhausted sigh, as if she had been forced to be here, the figure finally said.

"Upon arriving in the capital city, every student of Glaive is assigned a security guard to protect them...in cases like this."

Letting my curiosity get the best of me, I immediately replied, recalling my terrible luck.

"Kidnappings like this happen to Glaive students that often?"

Shaking her head, the figure gestured for me to follow her before responding.

"Nope. Most people take the mana train, but...a select group of students decide to make the trek through the city alone."

"And, seeing this, djinns and villains just can’t pass up on the opportunity."

"If they had succeeded in kidnapping you, a djinn would be sent in your place to Glaive, giving whatever evil organization a free spy within the academy.

Exiting the alleyway and reentering the bustling streets of the capital city, I awkwardly coughed before saying.

"Thanks...for saving me...Glaive staff member?"

Standing on the edge of the sidewalk, the figure stretched her left hand out as far as she could into the street before turning to face me.

"It’s Daisy, and I’ll be one of your teachers."

Then, without waiting for my response, Daisy began to scream out.

"CARRIAGE! CARRIAGE! LOOKING FOR A CARRIAGE! WILL TIP WELL!"

A moment later, a carriage suddenly veered off the middle of the road and headed toward Daisy, pausing just before hitting the sidewalk’s curb.

Without waiting for a response from the driver, Daisy pulled open the carriage doors and jumped in.

*HONK*

"MOVE IT!"

"YOU’RE BLOCKING TRAFFIC."

Not minding the yells of the carriage drivers behind, I subsequently leaped upward, letting the carriage doors close behind me.

"To Glaive bridge."

Not skipping a beat after Daisy’s words, the carriage driver immediately started again, moving forward at an incredible speed.

Although this world hadn’t yet invented engines and, thus, cars, it had maximized carriage speed.

Horses were bred specifically for speed and enhanced with certain speed spells and potions, quite literally making the word "Horsepower" come to life.

Though operated by mana and electricity, they were also traffic lights on every street corner.

And, to minimize accidents and crashes, the wood used to make carriages was infused with a bouncy substance of physical mana.

So, if one carriage crashed into another, they would simply bounce off each other, avoiding the breaking of materials.

As the noise of the busy capital city was drowned out by the carriage’s hard wood, Daisy placed her head on her palm and gazed out the window.

Placing my hand over my nose to pretend I was deeply thinking when I was actually just trying to block out the terrible smell within the carriage, I closed my eyes.

After that whole rant of mine saying I’d do anything to survive, here I was, getting saved after almost dying to djinns.

Without me knowing, a sudden question appeared inside my brain.

Would that have happened if she were there?

Shaking my head, I sighed and looked out the window.

I had made my decision, and, not because of my stubbornness, I couldn’t take it back.

I simply had to become stronger.

Outside the carriage windows, I saw the fleeting images of buildings and human figures flash by, making me feel like I was in a car.

Of course, the hardwood I was sitting on couldn’t compare to the soft leather of a modern-day car, though.

If I had to guess, we were moving at around 20 miles per hour, which wasn’t bad at all considering the crowded road.

Most enlightened people had movement abilities that far surpassed the speed of carriages, though, so this wasn’t anything crazy.

Before I could continue reminiscing about my days on Earth, a sudden voice sounded from beside me.

"Interesting first day in the big city, huh?"

Although she had been the one to save and look over me, I couldn’t help but be annoyed by her sarcasm.

I had almost died.

Sighing, I muttered.

"Looks like another girl with no social awareness."

Not to my surprise at all, Daisy seemed to hear my words as she immediately turned away from the window.

At that moment, a massive body of deep-blue water came into view, immediately attracting my attention.

Stretching from the boundary of the capital city to the edge of my sight, the dazzling blue water sparkled under the bright sun’s rays.

Without any hesitation, I immediately lifted the window of the carriage upward, not minding the crack sound that echoed after.

As I stood up and put my head as far out the window as I could, like a dog, my nose was immediately assaulted by the extremely salty smell of the seawater. free𝑤ebnovel.com

However...instead of being repulsed, I was overjoyed.

I had completely forgotten about the sea!

The salty smell of the water surrounding the Glaive island was so strong that not a single horrid human scent entered my nose.

Even the scents of the driver and teacher inside the carriage didn’t bother me.

In front of the carriage, I could see the massive stone gate that stretched over twenty feet and surrounded the entire island.

And, behind those gates, countless modern buildings with windows and large red banners that read, "Welcome class of 26!" appeared.

While the carriage moved forward and gusts of wind rushed against my face, throwing back my hair, I sincerely smiled.

Yet...that happy moment soon left me as I recalled the events of earlier today.

One of the best parts of experiencing something good was doing it with others.

Yet, before an image of a certain white-haired girl could materialize within my mind, a sudden cold and demanding voice sounded from inside the carriage.

"Move it; mine doesn’t work."
