Chapter 276: Final Act I: Rewriting the preordained

The child of evil didn’t have a physical body in the past. He was a shroud who lived within the body of his chosen host; the reason it was hard to distinguish who was the child of evil from the surface. One of the many reasons I mistook Niall to be the child of evil was that I felt it inside him.

I sensed that familiar prowess, albeit faint, but I never felt it from Azazel. It was a mistake. I was too complacent and made a grave mistake, letting Azazel lurk around me freely.

I should’ve known how cunning he could be. That everything... ever since the wolf entered the mortal realm and the creation of the child of evil, lies became the truth and the truth — the multiple truths distorted over time. Not everything on the surface was what it looked like.

I should’ve seen the sign. From the start, the sign had always been there right in front of me. Starting from the Everfell family, their wrong affection for me, the hair-raising intention of raising a lamb turned human, they could feast once she matured. That was already the biggest sign of the entire situation.

The love I thought was pure and filial...

Just like Alice’s existence, the Tarsa tribe, the House Talon, the Bathory’s, Grimsbanne... everything from the very beginning. All problems that arouse pointed in one direction and that was everything that appeared from the outside was not the entire truth.

I failed to see that. I failed to see the hints, the warning signs, and now... my people were suffering.

"Hugo!!" I yelled my lungs out as soon as I landed at the roof of the guard tower, eyes at the wolfman standing at the tallest tower of the imperial palace of Ronmin. I shouted once again and this time, it was much louder than before but to no avail.

My call faded into the sound of fightings, howling, and the auditory of life slipping away from the ground. I felt my heart constrict as my face crumpled, panting for air, eyes at my husband emanating shrouds from his back like silent screams. When he howled, it echoed across the capital, garnering howling from his people — the chosen wolves.

"Hugh..." I whispered, almost choking at the tension in my throat the longer I stared at his figure from my vantage point.

Hugo was looking up at the portal up in the sky as if brooding about how he could enter it. Jumping would be a good idea, but I knew, as the lamb, the gates weren’t complete just yet.

And to open it, he needed a key. 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

My breath suddenly hitched when Hugo turned his head and looked in my direction. As soon as he did, I felt like his crimson eyes that were glowing unnaturally bright locked with mine. I felt my heart constrict that very second.

No matter how loud I yelled and called for him, Hugo never heard me. He only did when he figured out the key he needed to enter the empyrean realm.

That was me. The last one.

The wolf, the lamb, and the child of evil in one body. The completion of the wolf and regaining the destructive powers led him to stand trial in front of the god and goddesses in the past.

His glowing red eyes were telling me, "right on time."

"Hugh, my love..." came out a shaking voice, already bleeding from the inside even before I could fight. "... I’m sorry."

I said I would rewrite the history, but right now, we’re moving into Azazel’s version of the history. It was still just as devastating as the first. Actually, it was almost similar since the lives that were already lost: vampires, wolves, bears, and witches alike, were devastating.

The number of deaths was not a lie, and it was heartbreaking how life seemed to have little to no value anymore. Death after death, blood painting the once lush landscape where the wolves rolled around and play. The imperial palace, which was once so bright and harmonious, was filled with nothing but darkness and red.

’Mother...’ I whispered in my heart, keeping my eye contact with Hugo, and my ears open to the sound of the surrounding. ’Why did you even entrust this world in my hands?’

Questioning my existence because nothing seemed to go my way was useless at this point. I knew that. However, I couldn’t help it.

Too much... and too painful.

I opened and closed my mouth, but I had already lost my voice under the intense, blazing gaze from Hugo in this distance. I could feel my blood running cold, the pieces of my heart falling apart, and my entire body going numb from the top of my scalp to the very tip of my toes.

Did I already fail? I drew a breath, only to feel disappointed, as it was akin to breathing underwater. I was still left breathless.

"If love is something as intense as you want to chew your way under their skin..." when I recovered my voice, the first thing that came out of my mouth was my husband’s words during his proposal. "If love is something as desperate as to sacrifice the world or mine just for you..."

I trailed off as I thought of the answer I never uttered and had always kept within. My eyes softened with bitterness as the tip of my hair floated. My vision shook before it grew clearer, as if Hugo’s figure magnified, making my sclera fade into black, my pupil constricting into a vertical slit like a cat.

My muscles flexed and expanded a little as my skin was slowly coated with thick, dirty white furs. My hands slowly changed into paws along with my figure, ripping apart my clothes, replaced by furs from head to toes.

"... then I love you," were the last words that slipped out of my mouth as I morphed into my original form, not the borrowed human form.

I was not a human; I was... and would always be the lamb. Someone who was tasked with overseeing the mortal realm and the people inhabiting this world.

My one and only purpose was to live and die for this world.

Although I changed and acknowledged that I was now Rinnie Tempest, my purpose stayed the same. "That is... to live and die for my world." — Hugo was my world.

HOWL...

Hugo let out another echoing howl as soon as I reached the completion of my form. And for obvious reason, I knew it was a howl of festivity, setting his eyes on me as a target.

His meal. His key. A piece of him. Anything but his wife.

But I couldn’t hate him, not even the slightest.

Instead, I drew a breath even if it was useless, keeping my attention on him. His eyes glowed brighter before he advanced in my direction. The distance between our vantage points was huge, but just one leaped, and he cut our distance in half.

I closed my eyes and took another deep breath. When I opened them, my love for him remained to flood my eyes, but so was my resolve to change what was already written.

’As long as it wasn’t ’THE END’ I can still try, Hugh,’ I communicated with him silently, heart to heart, hoping he would hear the frequency of my heart despite that my voice was unable to reach him. ’We can still try because...’

"We’re never one without the other." My voice was barely above a whisper, bending my knees open, my arm in between until my paw was on the surface of the roof. Time seemed to freeze for a while, granting everyone a moment to take everything in, to let things sink in and process.

"We’re always a team and this... this final act before the curtains close, we will be holding each other’s hand as we take a bow."

I promised you.

Our story... wasn’t just a love story that could move the most callous heart, but a story that would go down in the history of bravery, love, and a tale that would break the chain that bound this world to a recurring curse.

A story that would transcend cultural and racial boundaries.

The solution to the unfinished issues of those whose hearts were still unrest.

The beginning and the end.

May the moon bless us.

When I blinked my eyes, times seemed to clocked back to its usual pace and in one big push, I leaped to meet Hugo mid-air, ignoring the rumble I caused on the tower as half of it broke down at the force of my paws when I pushed myself to give myself a momentum.

The wolf met me with his mouth stretching wide as if catching his prey that was flying towards him. For a moment, my breath hitched, but I steeled my heart and gritted my teeth. My eyes sweltered, but no tears escaped my pair of sharp eyes.

And then, followed by my loud roar that could match his thundering growl.

BAM!
