True Alpha's Chosen Mate-Chapter 307: It’s fine. No one is watching
I didn’t know what got into me, but somehow Sven convinced me to sneak out with him. I never snuck out of the castle. Not because I was too afraid to do that, but more like I didn’t have the spare energy to deal with the duke once the word reached his radar.
So why... am I standing in the middle of this brightly lit street somewhere near the border of the duchy?
"Welcome!" I snapped my eyes as Sven suddenly jumped in front of me. His lips were stretching from ear to ear and his arms were spread wide open as if I was the one who wasn’t a resident here.
"This is the night market where you find all types of illegal things!! Human organs, live killing —"
"You’re joking, right?"
Sven grinned and laughed. "Of course! Hah!"
"It’s not funny." I heaved a sigh of relief but glared at him when I recovered. I should kick him at least once in this lifetime.
My eyes dilated when he patted me on the back. Although not with enough force, it still made me hunch mildly.
"This is what I meant when I say you’re so easy! Haha! You’re so serious...!"
My face flushed in red while he laughed loudly while tapping my back. I made a mistake; I thought. I shouldn’t have agreed with him.
’I can still go back,’ I convinced myself inwardly. ’Yes. I can still...’
"Right!" my already dilated eyes went even wider as I felt his palm on my shoulder. "Let’s go and enjoy the night, just like everybody else!"
I looked back at him and all I saw was his blinding grin. I shook my head on instinct, causing his brows to furrow, and then he frowned. But before I could say anything, he snatched my hand and dragged me with him.
"Come on! We’re already here! Going back isn’t fun!" he explained while dragging me with him.
"You —" I nearly tripped over, making me pause momentarily before I glared daggers at his back. I ground my teeth, about to pull my hand away from his loosened grip, only to get distracted by the scent that wafted my nose.
I turned my head to the side, and my eyes instantly fell on the stall on the side. My brows furrowed seeing thin smoke while people were flocking the stall.
"Oh! That’s a chicken skewer!" Sven exclaimed and before I could ask what was that, he dragged me to the stall where that strange appetizing aroma was coming from.
"Wait —"
"Let’s buy it, I’m hungry."
I ground my teeth, pulling my hand only for him to grip it securely. He looked back at me and grinned.
"Come on... it may not look as fancy as you normally have, but I will wager my limb, you’ll like it."
"No, wait — that’s not —" I pulled my hand from his grip when I used a little more force. "Wait, alright?"
I huffed, holding my wrist while I moved it in a circular motion. Stopping from my track, I clicked my tongue and glared at him in response to his frown.
"Have you really changed your mind?" he asked, lowering his shoulders. "But we’re already here and it’ll be a shame to miss out on tonight’s party."
"You..." I breathed out, inhaling and exhaling, before raising my chin up, standing with poise. "... don’t have to drag me around, alright? Do you have any idea how hard it is to avoid tripping with this dress and heels?"
Sven looked at me from head to toes as if he just realized how I dressed up. Although we snuck out, I changed my clothes to a black dress matched with black laced gloves, a black veil, and just everything black because I was planning to stay on the sidelines! I didn’t expect to actually walk in the middle of the street and even if there was the possibility; I didn’t have any notion such festivity in the night existed in the duchy.
"Right... I forgot I was about to ask which funeral or wedding you’re planning to attend." My nose scrunched up at hearing his mumble, getting even more pissed when he pursed his lips as if to suppress the tempting laughter wanting to escape his mouth.
"Hold it in until you die. I swear if I hear even the slightest snicker, I’ll slit your throat," I warned, watching him force a straight face.
"Ye — ye —"
My expression died as he averted his eyes away, closing his eyes while covering his lips with his palm. Although he wasn’t laughing loudly, his trembling shoulders were enough for me to know his efforts to stop it.
"I really... really hate you." I huffed, picking up my skirt as I stormed towards the stall where they sold chicken skewers. I never had those before, but they genuinely intrigued me. Also, it was better to distract me. I was already here, and I might as well make the most out of it. I would just pretend Sven was a dead man.
I stood on my toes, dodging some men as they turned around and walked past me. My eyes focused on the food in their hands, although they didn’t seem to mind me. Well, no one knew me in this area. It was a small town and was far away from the duke’s residence. In other words, these people were one of those people who could be considered lucky that they were the farthest from the duke’s reach, and also unfortunate because that meant the duke saw this place and all the people in it as cannon fodders.
I stood on the side of the stall, watching people wait for their turn while the merchant was busy in his business. It didn’t seem they had noticed me until I felt a tug on my skirt. I gazed down and furrowed my brows to see two young boys stare at me with genuine wonder in their eyes.
"Auntie, are you sad?" they asked out of nowhere, and I tilted my head. "Here. We bought a chicken skewer, but you can have it —"
"You! How dare you —" I yelled on instinct and raised my hand when the boy offered the stick with his dirty hand. However, just before I could swing my hand down at the boy, a large hand held it in the air, slipping his fingers in between the gaps in mine.
"Haha! How nice of you!" my breath hitched when Sven held my hand down, guiding it to the boy’s head, hands still intertwined. The boy flinched but calmed down when he shifted his eyes at Sven.
"She really appreciates it, but it’s fine, right?" he looked at me, tugging my hand slightly.
"Uh..."
"See?" he grinned and removed our hands from the boy’s head. "Just enjoy the chicken skewers. You deserved it."
The two boys blinked twice before they looked at each other and then back at Sven.
"Mhm!" they hummed and grinned. As if nothing happened, the two boys skipped their steps away while I gazed down to reflect on my actions.
’I nearly stuck that innocent boy on instinct,’ I thought, biting my lower lip in distress before I raised my head at Sven when he squeezed my hand.
"They’re fine, and you’re fine too. There’s no need to sulk." As usual, he flashed me a smile. "No one is watching you, I promise."
